No doubt the criticism of a player who, for better or for worse, is one of the world's best centre forwards is over the top from many United fans. His goals record was very respectable for us and when he wasn't scoring he did some decent work for the team as you say, particularly on the right if memory serves, but watching him week in week out you couldn't escape how un-elite so much of his play was. The wrong decisions, the missed chances, the famous poor ball control, the disappearing acts in many big games are not figments of our imagination, and while you could rightly say the club should shoulder some responsibility for the failed transfer so should the player. He talked and talked in the press then lumbered about out of condition and was downright dreadful at times, we can't apologise for our somewhat tainted outlook on the bloke, and I'm sure the feeling's mutual!
15 in 45 appearances is imo not very respectable for a second season.

I think he will do well at Chelsea but he didn't set the world on fire for united, or even come close. He was a massive let down.

I've done a wee edit on my post, not addressing your point, but still.

Yeah I'm going purely from memory and thinking more of his first season, when I thought he was largely good; scoring in good bursts and playing pretty well when he was in dry patches. The second season was much worse overall for sure, to the point where as I said it's tough to be objective about the player when you've seen him basically taking the piss with his levels of conditioning and performance.

If as you say he does well at Chelsea there'll be a lot of talk of how United mismanaged him, some of it justified as the club was a bad place generally for players and had been for a few years while Lukaku was here, but I've scarcely been more frustrated by a top player than I was by Red Rom.

Excellent goal scorer. But lets not forget his performances for us in the 'big games'.
If Chelsea have aspirations of winning the league or retaining CL they are gonna struggle with Lukaku cos he so rarely makes the difference in the biggest games.
Will easily score 20+ goals mind, just think a lot of them will be against the lower sides.
Still think we did the right thing letting him go.
Yeh I don't think it is even big games or poor control. I think it is pressure and like many at United he wilted under the expectation.

I remember he was complaining that fans were moaning if he scored one but missed chances. Or scored goals but not every game.

Unfortunately that is definitely what is expected of United standard forwards and there is no where to hide.

I don't know about Chelsea but I suspect when they spent close too 100million on him the fans will have similar expectations so he may again find himself start well then mentally cave when his run of scoring stops and people start to ask questions.

I could be wrong but I don't think he has the temperament.

I wish we had gone after Vardy instead of him. That guy mentally is so strong. Every time he stepped up a league he got better. That is a United player for me.

To be honest that united team Lukaku was played with, certainly the worst team in almost three decades. Were among the laughing stocks in the league.

With Mourinho tried to convert Lukaku into target man which is not his strength despite his size.

It didn't worked out for him at united but he did better than average for united compared to martial and Pogba who is still stealing the living from united.

We finished 2nd in 17/18 season and if we had invested were on course to challenge? It was best we had been for while before that. The came Mourinho meltdown.

Again did you watch him at Utd. Why is it that Utd fans opinions get shut down despite the fact we watched him very closely for 2 seasons? He’s just not where near top class.
Because United fans are bitter on what he said after leaving us. He still scored 42 goals in 96 games (including 27 in his first season) and since he left us, he scored 64 in 95. In the last 6 seasons, he scored 25 or more goals in 5 of them.

He will guarantee goals for Chelsea.

Perhaps but at what cost? Football players can contribute in other ways rather than just individual goals. He doesn’t bring anything else to the table and his goal record isn’t good enough to justify the poor elements in his game.

The Jose meltdown had already happened in that season, the wheels were clearly coming off, we were horrific to watch, and it was just depressing. I won't ever allow anyone to talk up that season. It was horrendous. Feck a 2nd place finish, especially when it feels that awful. Thank god we didn't invest and give in to what Jose had planned for us that summer.

Mate, you sound like a scorned ex girlfriend.

Matter of fact, many of us United fans sound like scorned ex girlfriends. He will score goals like he always does, Chelsea lack goals . Lukaku will be fine. United will be fine.

Ahh yes a fair assessment equals ‘scorned ex’. What a way to avoid valid criticism. The good news is he isn’t that great so he won’t be a roaring success anyway and I’ll be back here in a year to let everyone know!

He is strong, fast and has a good pass on him. His first touch is often bad but that doesn’t make him a bad player.

Good movement and good finishing too but I still think he’s levels below the top strikers.

You are welcome here after one year to assess his contributions. But your constant moaning about him clearly had the vibe of scorned ex. Make peace with it. He's not your team's problem anymore. If he failed at chelsea you can laugh all you want next year or at least after he failed to win chelsea a game coming season.

I don't get the Lukaku hate!! The guy had a close number of goal as Kane for mostly 3 years or so in the PL, maybe he doesn't have a Berbatov first touch, but he will score goals in any team he plays for. The guy is a deadly striker wished we sold Martial and kept him with this team that we have he would have been perfect.

That's a tough one. Lewandowski is an outstanding talent, clearly a better striker than Lukaku, but he's 33 in two weeks, so no resale value and he never played in England before. Even if he was available, Bayern would demand a huge fee so if you add wages/bonuses/agent fees, his overall cost would probably have been similar, if not bigger than Lukaku's.

From the club's point of view it might have been too much of a financial gamble, but it's not my money, so purely as a football fan, I'd have still gone for Lewa.
Yeah I think the overall outlay for the transfer would be similar to that of what you paid for Lukaku. As you said, Lewa is a better striker but isn't proven in the PL. Whereas, Lukaka has proven himself in the league and is 4-5 years younger. Also got the pace which is important in the league, he also knows the club well so I guess it makes more sense for Chelsea to go for Rom. I would have loved Lewa in the Prem!

Solskjear clearly didn't feel he fitted so ok back the manager and all that but the guy got 42 goals for us in 96 games... and as a team we were shocking in some of those 96 games so I really don't think it's as bad as some make out

Didn't Andy Cole get 32 goals in his first 99 games for us for comparison... so yeah if we had kept lukaku and built an attack that suited him I think he could have gone on to be a big success here but equally I'm not dissapointed that solskjear seems to want a more dynamic and fluid front line

Can see him having a real point to prove for Chelsea though and doing really well there but at least that will probably lessen their interest in haaland

I couldnt care a toss what his first touch is like, or his dribbling ability, i just want him to finish the chances Werner was missing last season. He will do that. He's prolific, this theory that he's not world class, is mental.

He's quite obviously top class, and is coming back to a league he is used to, and perhaps even to a style of play which suits him.

Is he worth the money? No. Will he turn out a successful signing in terms of goals scored? Yes

Surely if he's world class like you say he is, he's worth the money?
Apart from Ronaldo, Messi, and maybe KDB/Neymar, no one above 25 is worth that kind of money. But then again Barcelona spent that much on Dembele and Juventus spent it on an aging Higuain. PSG gambled a 150M on Mbappé when he had 6 months' experience. Man City has been spending 60+ on average defenders for fun. So there is very little to read into these prices nowadays.

When you've watched a few full 90 minute games with Lukaku playing, especially against a half decent side, you will realise he is not anything like world class.

There's only so many failed stepovers and glaring misses, while stropping about pointing at everyone else, that any fan can tolerate.

Granted Werner probably has Lukaku beat when it comes to glaring misses so it will probably still feel like an upgrade.

Even with that Jose meltdown, Lukaku was shocking in his 2nd season.

He missed 3 straight absolute sitters to open the season. He himself cost us vs Brighton and Spurs in back to back games.

That isn't true at all. The team Lukaku played in during his first season came second in the league and reached an FA cup final; hardly achievements I know, but also hardly dire. The team you are talking about had Pogba, prime Herrera, prime Matic, prime Dr Gea, not to mention Lingard when he was in Messi mode.

The United teams under Van Gaal 2015/16 and Ole's pre-Bruno 19/20 side were far worse in terms of quality.

Ultimately, whatever Lukaku goes on to do at Chelsea, he was a disappointment here. Not terrible, but below expectations for the level of quality you would expect from a player of that price, pedigree, and experience.

I'm yet to see posts saying Immobile, Duvan Zapata, Luis Muirel are world class too, yes all 3 of them have better record than Lukaku in Serie A since he joined Inter.

You could have quoted Cantona's figures. Not very impressive either in bare goals. Why stop there? Quote the first two seasons of Ronaldo with us. Most ridiculous defense of Lukaku right here.

When Lukaku is in the team it always feels like he is your main player and everything has to go through him.

I saw this at United but I saw this particularly in the Belgium National team - there has always been world class players around him but the team was only really as good as Lukaku was on the day.

How on earth are Chelsea and city able to spend 100 mil on 1 player after losing so much money during the pandemic? Chelsea also spent a load last season, guardiola said at some point last season that there not able to go out and spend 100 mil on players:lol: everything that comes out of that guys mouth is absolute nonsense

Chelsea have sold players for about £55 million so far this window, with more to go. Tammy Abraham will fetch about £30 million.

It won't be a huge overall outlay for Chelsea this summer. We might even make a profit.

That's not on Ole, Ole had him for 6 months...

It was Jose who let Lukaku becoming that big... at United he never got the one on one coaching which Conte gave him.

I just read the names of the players you've sold and I honestly don't know how you do it (or maybe, why we can't).

We can do better but the simple fact is that Chelsea's players are better than ours. Tomori impressed on loan at Milan and help them qualify for the Champions League. Abraham has 90 career goals including 30 for Chelsea over the past two seasons as a rotation player. Which of our loanees and unwanted players are the equivalent of those two players in terms of performance?

That’s a pretty simplistic view, considering it very much does matter what his control and dribbling ability is like, especially playing in a team with the forward line you guys have. It is clear he was in a mismanaged United team, and there was plenty of rumours about the diet issues that caused him to put weight on, which weren’t spotted by United.

That said, it’s undeniable that Serie A is a weaker league and his international record is hugely littered with bunches of goals against truest horrible teams. I’m not talking about the likes Palace or Sheffield United, more like Gibraltar, San Marino etc.

Just on that last point, if you win trophies, yes. Otherwise his time at United would have been considered a success.

Lingard is a fair point, although his form is woefully inconsistent. Phil Jones though! Who will take a gamble on someone with his wages and injury record? Our issue is over paying players which makes them much less attractive to buying clubs.

There’s a huge difference between the standards of Chelsea not wanting players and ours. Chelsea selling their most promising youngsters isn’t something to celebrate IMO. Its not as if Chelsea keep and play their biggest talents, they’re sold as well (unless there’s a transfer ban in place). It’s like us selling Mejbri or Greenwood etc
