Why not just put Only way is Essex in their as well1. Big bang theory.
2. Two and a Half Men.
3. Love Island
Love Island arguably should be higher up on the list. It really holds a mirror to society.
With both Succession and Better Call Saul still running, we have writing of a similar calibre right now. Mare of Easttown was brilliantly written too. There's plenty of great TV in the streaming era.The Sopranos, The Wire and Mad Men. Quality of writing that was unparalleled and probably won’t be seen again. The more streaming services, the more content produced, less risks are taken and talent is spread far too thin.
Oh ffs now I have to watch the wire againIn order from best down;
With this such an incredibly close fourth that I had to add it...
The world has become an authoritarian place.Wasn't aware there were such stringent rules...
It's a TV show. It counts. Fawlty Towers is widely recognised as one of the best TV shows of all time and it only has two more episodes than Band of Brothers, so I am not sure on your reasoning.
Obviously everyone knows season 1 was the best, but the other two are pretty good too.Yet you put True Detective in your list, which is an anthology series where each season is almost completely unrelated to the previous one. You even specified Season 1.
That I can agree with. Season 2 was panned, but I quite liked it.Obviously everyone knows season 1 was the best, but the other two are pretty good too.
I've got one of those iptv thingys lately and there's a 24hr The Wire channel, on an almost daily basis I drop in on a random episode and end up watching 3 on the bounce. It literally never gets old, the script and performances are perfectionOh ffs now I have to watch the wire again
I'd add prison break season 1 as well as one of the best seasons of TV.If we can pick individual seasons rather than quality of the entire show, the process becomes even more difficult. True Detective season 1 is probably the best single season of a show I have ever seen, maybe besides Band of Brothers, but I think the other seasons take away from the overall quality of the series. Ditto the second season of Fargo (although season 1 was great as well), or the first seven or so seasons of the Simpsons if we can disregard the next 20 something. But, based on quality of the entire run of the show, my favourite three are:
Breaking Bad
Band of Brothers
Nathan For You (ever so slightly ahead of Peep Show/Its Always Sunny)
The ending for season 3 was amazing, buildup a little boring though. That I can agree with. Season 2 was panned, but I quite liked it.
In that case, the shield, GOT and I SOA but I know its not that popular in these parts. We should have a list of Top 3 shows apart from The Wire, Sopranos and BB as those will be fairly common.
I was in the middle of watching Twin Peaks and then it went from Netflix. That was years ago. I agree it was brilliant.Mad Men & BoJack Horseman would be my top-2, I think.
I really struggle with the third one though, there are so many. Twin Peaks, The Sopranos, The Simpsons (obviously up until some point). Community, Peep Show, Boardwalk Empire, The Office (US), Fleabag... and so many more.
I’ll go with Twin Peaks, I guess, there was never anything like it before or since.
Indeed. I Blame the bloody Romans. What did the Romans ever do for us...?The world has become an authoritarian place.
Sounds good to me.1. The Wire
2. The Sopranos
3. Breaking Bad
Honorable mention for South Park.
My gut feeling is, Firefly counts, Black Mirror counts, Band of Brothers doesn't.But, despite this trend of people being so easily willing to bend over to so-called authority, I am going to stick with my gut feeling and proudly proclaim my belief that "TV show" still means - a show that was aired on television.
I’d strongly disagree on Mare of Easttown. Horrible writing. Anybody can throw a host of ridiculous red herrings on a page. Better Call Saul and Succession are very good, but they’re not at that level for me.With both Succession and Better Call Saul still running, we have writing of a similar calibre right now. Mare of Easttown was brilliantly written too. There's plenty of great TV in the streaming era.
Yes, of course streaming platforms are now a thing....yet I don't hold the opinion that, in a thread named 'Greatest TV Shows of All-Time', anything which specifically did not air on a TV station should not be allowed. That would be pretty ridiculous. Instead, I am simply saying that a show which DID air on TV, should be allowed in such a titled thread. My gut feeling is, Firefly counts, Black Mirror counts, Band of Brothers doesn't.
Not really any logic, just gut feeling. But your reasoning of "was aired on television" is very outdated in the times of Netflix.
