There is only one true one team league and that sir is Ligue 1.

Somehow Poch managed to feck up the easiest one horse race around.
Don't watch Serie A or Bundesliga then, you'd be in for a big surprise. Also didn't City win 3 of the last 4?

Ah, to be 10 years old again.

Kaka' never lived up to the expectations, and Benzema took a while to get going. Still have to see how PSG plays out, but I think it's better than Madrid's summer because PSG got the best player in the world, and arguably the best RB and GK in the world, while re-signing Neymar. I can definitely see the argument, but I think PSG's summer window is more impressive, especially if they live up to expectations, which is still far from certain.
Come on, just admit that you forgot about it. This PSG transfer window could lead to nothing and on paper it's not better than Real Madrid's 2009 transfer window, it's not even close.

There is a huge difference between playing English sides 3-4 times a year and having your ankles kicked 30-40 games a year by the likes of Sunderland, West Ham and Crystal Palace. There is also the issue of adjusting to the culture, food, weather and tactics of United/City/Chelsea.
Look at what happened to Di Maria, Veron, Shevchenko, Crespo and Deco. None of them could adjust.
Look at Hazard - total disaster at Madrid despite being a top-5 attacking midfielder in PL.

In winters, the grounds in England are harder and wetter than in Spain - high chances of twisting your ankles, slipping in an awkward way, etc.
Who is to say that Messi would remain injury free during his time in England?
Fernando Torres was once expected to be at least as good as Cristiano. Guess what? One bad injury in November and he was never the same player.

When Cristiano joined United, United were the 3rd favorites behind Arsenal and Chelsea in the PL and a Tier 1 team in the CL.
He left them as PL favorites and Tier 1 team in the CL.
When Cristiano joined Madrid, Madrid were a distant second favorites behind Barca in La Liga and a Tier 3 team in the CL (Tier 1 - United, Barca, Chelsea; Tier 2 - Milan, Arsenal, Bayern, Juve).
In 9 years he won 2 Ligas and 5 CLs.
When Cristiano joined Juve, Juve were strong but an ageing team. Juve have suffered from managerial instability and spent over Euro 500 million on players other than Cristiano since his time there. Can you name more than 3 Juve players who you would pay over Euro 50 million for? The management has wasted money.
Despite all this, Cristiano has one 2 Serie As and 1 Domestic Cup.

On the other hand, Messi has played in a team which is at worst considered the second favorites to win the League. Barca will always be top-4 - think about it, if they are unable to register their 4 signings, are Barca expected to fall outside top-4? That's how easy it is for them.

Now consider international competitions - Copa America vs Euro.
Messi plays in a tournament which has 3 strong teams other than the one he is in: Brazil, Uruguay and a surprise team (Colombia/Venezuela/Chile).
Theoretically Messi is bound to be a semi-finalist/quarter-finalist almost every time.
Ronaldo plays in a tournament where at least on paper France/England/Italy/Netherlands/Germany/Spain and 2-3 surprise teams like Belgium/Croatia are at least in the same tier as Portugal, if not better.
How many goals has Messi scored in competitive games when compared to Ronaldo?
How many goals has Messi scored in competitive games against the top-30 when compared to Ronaldo?

Messi is a more talented player than Cristiano but lets be real, his body of work is nowhere close to Ronaldo.
 Always great when "let's be real" is followed by a load of nonsense. Preceded by it too, to be fair.

35m after tax. Dont try to cover it. We are not mentioning the money he gets under the table in his Qatar bank account. Do you think people are naive to believe one of the best football players in the world is not joining PSG for the money?
You guys have a very hard time understanding that 35M net doesn't mean "after tax". It makes a huge difference.

Pretty wonderful to see the level of some arguments here.

If Messi's salary is high : oil club, plastic club, money money
If it's not that high : he gets money under the table, it can't be that low, plastic club.

Messi is at the end of his career, its not that ludicrous to think that he wants to play with one of his best friend, under an Argentinian coach with other players from Argentina, in Paris (sorry Manchester), in a team that reached 2 semi finals and 1 final in the pas 2 years and, yes, for a nice amount of money. Making it a monofactorial decision is pretty absurd.

They had just won the league and had won it 6 of the last 8 seasons before Ronaldo came to United.

The lengths of which some of you will go to to praise Ronaldo are mind boggling.

Admit what? I never forgot about that summer, I'm in my 30's my man, I just think PSG's window is potentially better. Again, what did Kaka' do exactly? Benzema was 21 coming from Lyon and had ups and downs, if PSG win the CL this year, and we have big games from Donnarumma, Messi, Hakimi, as I expect we'll see, then no way I'm putting summer 2009 over this window, also context matters, a lot of those players were gotten without a transfer fee paid, Real Madrid shelled out world record fees to get those players on top of crazy wages. You take all of that into account, and again I already mentioned it's all on paper and we have to see how they do, but I'm perfectly comfortable telling you that if they succeed, I see it as the best transfer window by a club as far as I can remember, which goes far beyond 2009 btw.

Of all the teams mentioned, only City, PSG and Bayern would make sense for him . All other teams are just a level down. Bayern doesn't pay what he wants and so, only City and PSG are the 2 options left. You don't really know if he actually enquired about City or not.

So, trying to pass it off as "just money" is as laughable as it could get. He chose the best team that could offer him money and a chance to win CL.
Point there "offer him what he wants". Cos he is a 23 year old wanting the most? He is 34, made billions. feck it, go for football reasons, a club you've admired etc. But he didn't. He went for money. No club on the planet would turn him down if he said "I won't ask for your entire wage budget". Bayern I am sure would make him their highest paid player if he said he wanted to come

It's said that Messi was responsible for 33% of Barcelona's total income so he was bringing in more money than he was taking.
A lot of things are said, doesn't mean that they're true. The most positive estimations from his biggest admirers barely had them breaking even on him. Even then, most of the math goes "2 million Messi shirts sold = 30 million Messi has made for Barca" completely failing to take into account that a number of these shirts would have been sold regardless, just with another player on the back.

There's also Rakuten CEO saying that if Barcelona didn't have Messi, they'd only be willing to pay half of what they have been paying. That's another ~23 million he brings in for them in a lot of these calculations. Except that assumes no other company would be willing to shell out more than ~23 million to have their names on the shirt of one of the biggest teams in the world, which seems highly unlikely.

He's an Argentinian who has played his entire career for his dream club. What makes you think he has any strong alliance or preference to one European team over another?

Realistically it was always gonna be PSG or City.

And 5 teams have won in the last 10 years. No other league comes close to that figure.
I'm pretty sure that figure is going to dwindle very quickly over the next few years. Messi joining City wouldn't have been any more competitive in my view, there's no team that comes close to them in the Premier league, but there's a lot of people here who are obviously upset Messi won't be playing in their league, which clearly is a criminal offense.

Haha, well I can see the argument and 2009 is the obvious answer because this just happened there's nothing but names on paper right now, but depending on how things play out it might not sound as crazy in a year or two. ;)

The thing is, he is mate with Neymar and maybe close to other argentines but definitely close mate with Neymar. PSG could easily be the football and personal choice for him on top of being lucrative, it's not as if we are talking about Anzhi a while ago.

How is Bayern better for footballing reasons? They're a better team with PSG so he'd have a much better chance of CL success, but other than that, their league is as uncompetitiveas it gets? I'd rather see Messi in a better league, but given I never wanted him in the PL at one of our rivals, it leaves little alternatives. Bayern and PSG are similar excep Bayern being even more dominant and having a true winning culture that PSG don't. Italian clubs have no money and Juve spent all theirs on Ronaldo. So given that, I'm fine with him going to PSG. The PL is the only other opton and it would have been shit to see him at City or Chelsea. feck that. He's simpyl too phenomenal for them to have.

I have to disagree. I am an arsenal fan from canada and bought a Messi and a CR7 jersey when i travelled to Spain years ago. Will I buy a Barcelona or Real Madrid jersey without both players in that team? Hell no.

No one knows the full details of his contract. He's not getting paid under the table, that deal will be highly scrutinized and PSG has enough money to pay him officially. Also, he joined for the money but mainly to win the CL. Are you so jaded to think there wasn't any sporting reasons behind joining the team PSG has put together? He's got the best young RB in the world to combine with, Neymar, and Mbappe. It's not just about the money.
He is. No way PSG can make their books clean in front of the FFP if they do not cover payments under the table. As for sporting reasons. No, joining the farmers League is never a sporting reason. He cant join a football club just to play 6 CL games a year and be satisfied with his sporting reason. Also there are no guarantees the will compete for the CL.

PSG is a plastic club with no football history and no prestige whatsoever, there is no shame in admitting that. Do you want to tell me PSG is a not a plastic club? You have to convince the world, not only me.

Again, as reported by Fabrizio, 35m net salary. Do the Math.

Ans what exactly is this footballing reasons? What footballing reasons can other teams give which PSG can't ? Get a grip. Don't let your hatred towards Messi override the sane thoughts. Seems like, you can't digest the fact that he joined an already brilliant team and just made it better in CL. Noone cares about ligue 1 here.

"If he wanted to challenge himself, he would come to the PL and test himself against the likes of Brentford and Norwich and Burnley"

Anyway, GOAT level player. He'll have a few good seasons at PSG.
Two Manchesters, Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs and Leicester say hi to playing two Madrid clubs twice a year and to whoever you're quoting. In France there isn't even a proper derby, he'd be better off in Celtic

There was a independent report that PSG did the numbers and Messi would bring in additional 30% revenue to PSG and would increase tourism to Paris by 5%-10%. As people would travel to Barcelona for a holiday, but specifically to see Messi play for Barcelona. So there would be a similar effect for Messi at Paris.
I always thought these studies were bullshit, how do you attribute these gains to just Barcelona/PSG and Messi ?

I don't really have an issue with him going to PSG cos as you say, he has reasons of friends and it's the easiest route to victory on paper. But I just don't like this narrative that some (not everyone of course) has that money is not really a big factor. It's also on PSG for offering that much if they had all the other stuff going for them to draw him. It's an insane salary - if he really wanted to go PSG the insane money wasn't needed. Either there was a bidding war or that's just what he was demanding which hardly fits the 'he just wants CL and sees PSG as the best option'

Good thing I didn't say they'd sell exactly the same amount of shirts without him, then. Point is, we don't actually know how many of them were exclusively Messi-shirts, so to speak.

Just taking the total number, (over)estimating how much money the club sees from that, then attributing it all to Messi will obviously not leave you with a correct answer.
For god sake, I've just told you that 35M net in France doesn't mean after income tax. You're so deep in your hatred that you don't even read.
I'm confused, what does net mean in France then? And how does it apply to an English-language statement?

United had lost Beckham, Veron and Barthez and none of these players were replaced by big names. A Portuguese teenager was their most expensive signing.
We didn't lose Barthez, he was dropped for being shite and loaned out in January 2004. Veron was a flop and him leaving didn't really weaken us at all. Beckham I'll give you.

Also, Louis Saha was our most expensive signing.

Net means after social contributions. Then you pay your income tax and you have your "net après impot"

I've seen it translated "take-home pay" in some countries but it's not always a perfect match.

Who said that money wasn't a big factor? From what I see everyone agrees that money is a factor and that there are several others, also other candidates would have paid him very handsomely.

I admit it, I will watch lots of PSG next season. What a team they have! Messi will be on like 50 games, 50 goals, 30 assists a season if he manages to stay injury-free. He was the best player in La Liga last year, so he will probably walk through Ligue 1 most of the time (literally).
If they are smart he won’t play that many at all. The goal is champions league, I doubt he’ll play so many in Ligue 1, clearly he will but i hope poch rotates him well. How is his record with that?

Net is what the employee receives from the employer, it's before income taxes. Brut/gross is the amount that the employer actually spend, it includes social contributions and pension.
