We simply need a DM that is comfortable on the ball to link the play.
We needed one of them more than Varane imo.

Good game from Pogba and Greenwood. We need to find a way to get a left winger in and allow Pogba to play upfront just behind the striker where he can make things happen. Maybe a strong sitting DM will allow that.

Not enough creativity throughout the game. Matic - Fred is an issue and Martial was completely anonymous. A little unlucky to go behind but we turned the screw and got the equaliser fairly early in the second half. Nice one lads, plenty of time to up the ante and run out comfortable winners against a side every man and his dog knows has struggled all summer...

The last 25 minutes were infuriatingly poor. The lack of application on the ball when there was a game to be won was disgusting, we ended up hanging on and in that context have to be fairly happy with a point. Ole takes Martial off for Sancho and rejigs to the front four that ended the Leeds game, fine. Ole then takes Fred off, who wasn't great, and leaves a not-up-to-speed McTom with Matic in the middle and the whole thing falls to bits. Dreadful passing, dallying on the ball, poor attitude in terms of trying to force a win.

Horrendous. Everybody knows we're a quality CM short but what is the excuse for the complete collapse in the last 20/25 minutes today?

Should've won and we failed to capitalise on the pressure after equaliser. Then sloppiness crept in with some loose passes and Maguire dallying allowing Armstrong's change. Can't start with Fred and Matic again, not enough quality there. If today didn't show we need a quality CM/DM

Calm down man! - No it isn’t at all. We have donny to come in when needed. If we wasn’t considered part of the bigger picture then he would have been moved on.
When has Ole ever played VdB in CM in a regular season game? And its not like VdB is a proper CM to begin with.

And Ole brought Lingard on ahead of Vdb.

Deepthroating information to Howard Nurse.
I have to say I can’t cope with another season of Matic taking 16 touches to do what could be done in 4. We must sign a DM if we have any hope of winning the league - which isn’t something we didn’t know already.

Where the grass is greener.
Shaw and Maguire for example who have been very reliable recently were rubbish, so many messy dodgy performances.

Just a very disappointing effort from pretty much the entire team.

Matic shouldn’t play for us in the league again, and Martial needs to spend a month playing U23s matches before being considered for selection again.

And Varane should come in for Maguire, not Lindelof, based on the performance so far.

You can see Southampton were set up for that point with Ralph's reaction at full time. They wanted to frustrate and did exactly that. We were our own worst enemy with the needless giveaways and lackadaisical passing which led to their chances. Their goal shouldn't have stood though.

I'm getting tired of saying this, but we need a press resistant midfielder. Either get someone from the market or use VdB. Our defenders look scared to pass into midfield instead of the wings. Our passing in general was shambolic today.

The most frustrating thing is it's the same problems with the same players every time. It's still early days and the team hasn't found its rhythm yet, but we had too many draws last season and we have to convert these into wins or we'll be off the pace again.

But it's not all terrible. Pogba and Bruno together can still create magic, Greenwood keeps looking sharp. Need the rest of the team to step up quickly.

Our midfield is shocking. If we don't sign a CM it's 3rd or 4th for us at best and no trophy yet again. Matic, Bruno, Fred and McTominay all had shockers and Pogba can't do it all by himself.

Frustrating game. Wasted several good chances and conceded from a deflection. While I'm critical of some of the tactical dispositions, we really should have won the game.

If nothing else, it should serve as a wake up call. Matic is finished and has no business starting games anymore, and we desperately need a midfielder who can withstand pressure and knows how to pass. And while it's his first start of the season, Martial looked as useless as he did last season.

Really disapointing performance, especially given how good we were last week.

We started the game reasonably well. However, despite doing so, I never really felt we had control of the game. We didnt have any rhytm to it. Nevertheless, I felt we did enough to go a goal ahead but it wasnt to be.

Soton got their goal, following some really sloppy play, which was the story of our game. Everything Soton created came as a result of us being really sloppy in possession.

Even when we drew level, we didn't really push on, which again is disappointing

That being said, we didnt lose and we have now equalled Arsenals record of not losing on the road. Fantastic achievement for Ole and the lads.

We go again!

Even 4 touches is too much

Sulky, frustrated, clumsy performance. Southampton had a go at us to be fair with that 12 man. I dont think we even turned up. The record is still alive though.

It seems we are not allowed to play badly or draw away nowadays. We drew (and lost) many games like this under Sir Alex too…..

Its the second game of the season. If we win the next game and I told you before the start of the campaign that we’d win two and draw one, most would take that in a heartbeat.

We can’t start reacting this badly to a bad performance before there becomes a trend and at two games, we don’t know if this is gonna be the norm or just a blip down to still finding our legs/form.

let’s not forget that fans are going to make away games harder this season too. 1-1 isn’t a bad result considering our performance. Varane, Cavani and Rashford to come back in and hopefully Sancho starts producing when he’s up to fitness.

Ole is making the same mistake over and over and his inability to act on these is costing us so many points.
  • We saw last year under Martial, we always struggled to beat teams, and this was highlighted when Cavani came in. He made such a big difference. I'd have liked to have seen a front 3 of Pogba - Greenwood - Sancho. Would love to know Oles thinking behind Martial.
  • Midfield - biggest issue last year is clearly going to cause us issues again this season. I'm sorry, but there's no defence for not playing VDB when we are outrun with McT, Fred and Matic (happened plenty of times last year and has happened again today).
  • Passing - all over the place,
  • Workrate / Urgency - We don't even look like we don't want to win the game, as a Man Utd fan, why is Ole not screaming at the players to move the ball faster, and push it upfield?
  • Subs - At least martial was subbed off earlier, but we saw Fred and Matic getting outrun constantly and it took until the 76th minute for this to change.
  • when Greenwood played so well at ST last week, why did Martial start up there?

Matic is done and Martial is finished at the club. We need midfielders, though I doubt we're going to get one this window. We've only really got McTominay and Fred and no one to really replace them if they are having an off day.

Just goes to show how much we need a top striker
Yeah I think Cavani could have made the difference. But lacking a good DM is the structural issue.

If Cavani is fit, VdB has done nothing to warrant making the bench - let alone be brought off it. We spent £40m on the coward for a significantly dimmer flash in the pan than Lingard has just had at West Ham.

Jimmy Garner has done more in the last year to be getting minutes in United's midfield than him.

Sancho hasn't shown why he should be a 'nailed on' starter yet. Couple of decent crosses when he came on but was largely invisible, disappearing when we needed someone on the counter to go at their defenders.
The fact that the alternatives are Martial and Dan James is enough reason for him to be starting, not to mention he needs the game time to get up to speed. You can’t expect him to light the place up from the get go coming off the bench in only his 2nd appearance in a new league.

It's the same old problems. Can't play out from the back, can't deal with opposition pressing, don't pass the ball like a top sides, struggle to create chances from open play.

£120M of this summer's signings sat on the bench is just bizarre. Mctominay being dropped baffling. Why we signed VDB I've no idea.

It is just two games. Pogba played well but the missing point is that OGS is too young to handle big players. I am not trying to be funny but I believe Conte Could sort things out and then leave so he leaves a stable team for the next guy. Just my opinion.

Same old utd, not much different from last season really. Carry on like this and you can kiss top 4 bye-bye and Ole will lose his job come the end of another trophyless season

Nothing to shout but you wonder why did we sign VDB in this game.

The entire game was basically just screaming at Ole that we desperately need a holding midfielder. Playing out of defence we had absolutely no one we could just play the ball into to cut through the press, and the entire game was basically just built around hopeful long balls into our attackers making forward runs. That's not good enough, and on top of that our midfield was totally non-existent in the counter press whenever we lost the ball.

Of course everyone is going to overreact. The good thing is we controlled the game for large portions. My feeling was that we waited far too long to haul off Martial, then took off the wrong midfielder, losing control of the game.

Greenwood should have been central. Sancho actually did have an impact when we were on top. He was combining really well with AWB, looking for one twos. Unfortunately we didn't stay on top for long, so as a result he spent most of the time defending.

For those who don't know, sancho drifts, Bruno drifts, pogba drifts, Greenwood drifts. We didn't win, noone's happy about that and yes, our build up was slow. Hopefully Varane has an impact on this and we sign a partner for Fred. It wasn't all bad and other teams will draw against teams.

We need huge investments still to start playing any kind of cohesive football again. I am guessing 6 new players and at least 500 mils spending.

This team is crying for a pure DM like Bissouma / Ndidi. Until we have that signing we will be like this only
