I noticed in the first half that Wan-Bissaka offers absolutely nothing going forward. It was even more evident in the second half.

I wish we had of signed Trippier, even if it was just to provide some competition for Aaron.
Look what signing Telles did for Shaw on the left.

Martial, Fred, and Matic need to never come back to Manchester. Born losers

Martial was invisible the entire time he was on. Fred was abysmal, and Matic and Maguire seem to have forgot how to pass to a teammate.

Overall very poor game, and we didn't seem too bothered with the draw. Pogba was probably the only one who had a decent game.

We should sell Martial, Lingard and Matic, and try to buy a competent midfielder before the window closes. Still doesn't excuse this performance, we had more than enough firepower to win this.

We didn't lose but if we did, it would not be undeserved. Different season but still same crap out there. Slow, impotent, incompetent and uncreative.

Was kinda obvious that last week said more about Leeds than it did us.
Back to slow, ponderous, sideways passing. Doesn't help when you make two blunders with your selection that most people pointed out correctly before the game was a bad choice.
Wasted 55 mins playing with a cone up front.

I genuinely find it remarkable that people think this team will come close to a title.
Southampton are a fecking mess and apart from some set pieces we barely laid a glove on them. Really poor

We need to accept that this team won't compete for the title as there are still too many problems squad wise (no RW and no DM, a poor RB). Once we do that, some results get a lot less frustrating
No mention of the bang average coaching staff?

The passing was atrocious today. So many slack passes and players ponderous on the ball. You'd never of thought that was the second game of the season.

Looked quite energetic against Leeds, so cue dropping Martial and fecking Matic in there.

We're our own worst enemy by slowing the game down and exhibiting shocking passing once it's at the desired pace. Talk about encouraging the opposition ffs.

Hope this is an eye opener for Ole.

Some of our players can't possibly be in the first 11, baring a massive injury crisis.

If this result is what it takes to never see the likes of Martial and Matić (even Fred) i'll take it.

Honestly terrible management and awful performances for players who should not be at a top club in 2021 (Matic and Martial). Unreal that our defence was so full of mistakes with Varane sat on his arse all afternoon. If Cavani can manage at least 60% of our games this season we should be ok but if not then it looks like we’ll struggle badly to make top 4.

People will overreact bit its early season and this can happen. Do I want to happen? Obviously not. Frustrating game as you do feel we were our own worst enemy out there today. Lots of poor passing and we played into their hands of looking for set pieces right from the start. This also led to a lot of time wasting towards the end and was enough to disrupt the flow of then game. We didn't look ready today anyway. But it's early season. Some people will freak out that we've dropped behind but there's loads of points to play for yet.

Its going to be long season ahead, and its going to be a tough one.
And we had a supposedly easy start that was going to give us a good start.

This team just doesn't control games and pass it we'll enough. Leeds are the perfect team for us to play. They attack, leave spaces at the back and aren't really good enough to suffocate us either.

Towards the end players look tired. I am most worried about that. Never was the case last year when we were playing almost 2 games a week throughout the season.

We will never win the league when Ole is persistent with two holding midfielders and our options are Matic, Fred and McTominay. Either play with one and have Pogba or Donny in midfield or go and buy a decent DM. Matic should not be playing for us anymore. He was finished two seasons ago. Our slow turnover of players means we get on position sorted by which point we have issues in other areas.

We cannot control the midfield with those 3 players in central positions. None of them can pass the ball. They can all tackle and track back but provide nothing going forward.

Fred was abysmal today. Cost us the game with an OG and terrible passing at crucial times.

Poor result against a poor Southampton team. Frustrating that the goal conceded should have been a free in the build up but them the breaks.

Captain Maguire almost gifted all 3 points to Southampton with a few brain farts.

Longest unbeaten away run record equalled, hopefully it's beaten with a United win against Wolves.

I knew it was going to be a poor result when I saw Martial in the starting lineup. No movement up front like we saw last week against Leeds - no fluidity. Why is he still here?

On the one hand, trying not to overreact here. Extremely unlucky in the first half and let down by some abysmally poor individual performances. But the lack of urgency and intent to win the game in the last 20 was really disappointing, and I just can't fathom that we don't go into games against Southampton with more of a plan. They have played the same way against us for the last three years and we continue to struggle against them because we can't play through a fairly simple press.

Matic and Martial need to shipped on, simple as. DVB was bought for what position - surely not a Fernandez backup and hence should be playing if his preferred midfield of Fred and McT isn't available as Matic offers us nothing.

Plus side is Greenwood looking good for some goals this season though as a plus today.

But these are the games we should be winning if we want to win the league, so disappointed with the squad selection of Martial and Matic and getting damn obvious they shouldn't be near that squad now.

After 70 mins we looked gassed. No energy constantly giving the ball away. Maguire for fecks sake nearly gifted them 3 points. Rinse repeat last season.

We played worse after we got the goal, which is pathetic. Challenging for top 4 again. I'll be amazed, as I was last year, if we get it.

Can't believe Ole was shouting all through that first 20 minutes telling the players to miss all those chances before their goal.

Then to cowardly make the exact sub the Cafe spent half time whinging about and then nearly had a stroke when it hadn't been made immediately before the second half began, only for us to some how get worse going forward than when the woeful Martial was part of the front 3.

Baffling management.

Well I'm going to be level headed and say Southampton are a decent team and getting a draw there wasn't too bad given its the start of the season and Sancho hasn't got going yet and varane is still to come in - as well as cavani and rashford eventually.

Everyone going into meltdown need to get a grip.
The whole team has lacked a preseason and it kind of showed after 60 min (similar what I thought vs Leeds but we were already 5-1 up). We got the goal and instead of kicking on we seemed like we were huffing and puffing. Add to that the number of stray passes which killed any momentum we had.

still it’s early days. I’m sure Soton were fired up being home with fans. That said they offered little and I still think it was a foul on Bruno in the build up to their goal- to think Scott got penalised for less last season

Did the coaching staff think Matic was suddenly going to grow fresh legs in the summer or something? Every season its the same shit. All our CMs play the same way, except for Matic who just plays the 3rd CB all the time, costing us time on the ball and our shape.

Can't have an off game 2nd game of the season though mate. Its the difference between being a title contender or not.
Given City lost to a poor Spurs team on day 1 then I guess we have written them off already as well then. This place never fails to amaze me!!

What we’ve learned from that game is Martial and Matic are finished, Sancho and Varane should be nailed on starters from now on and finally to no ones surprise we need to sign a fecking midfielder!
Added to your post. Not that its breaking news.

As bad as our midfield was today, we were woeful in the final third. Wasteful at first with our chances, then we just lost all cohesion within the front line and we were just shit. The only ball in the last 20 minutes that came anywhere close to bothering Southampton was the McTominay cross…but no one attacked it.

Should have won, nothing had changed since last year, same awful negative tactics. On paper, this team should be doing a lot better. For me, Ole is not the man to take us to the next level, but ill be happy to give him another season to see what he does. I am outstanded that DVB does not come on, Matic plays 90 and Lingard gets a run. Baffles me every time how someone cannot even get a single chance.

Just goes to show how much we need a top striker
Could also do with a manager who doesn't start two defensive midfielders who don't have one passing leg between the two of them against Southampton. I love Ole the person to bits, but I am damn near done with Ole the football manager.

Ole needs to pick a first team and start it every game. The starting XI should not include Matic or Martial.

Romeu causes us problems in midfield when we play these.

Martial shouldn’t be starting yet…. Especially when mason played so well last week in middle.

if Varane and Sancho don’t start the next match I’m going to lose it.
Sancho hasn't shown why he should be a 'nailed on' starter yet. Couple of decent crosses when he came on but was largely invisible, disappearing when we needed someone on the counter to go at their defenders.
