The love between United and Ronaldo has apparently always been one-sided. I would think he still has good memories from United, but he may not have felt anything special for the club, since he is now going to City. He also left United, as the club had helped him advance to being a top player.

I have to look at it this way; If anyone wants to wear my worn underpants, then they are welcome to do so.
He's spoken warmly about the club, its employees, the prospect of returning and Sir Alex in particular many times over the years. I made a post with several interview quotes earlier in this very same thread.

To be fair, he probably would come here if we made a decent offer and he would probably lower his wage demands from what City are being quoted. As much of a tw*t as he was, I don’t think his ego could resist a romantic return to United where he thinks we all still sing his name (and many admittedly still do).
He’s going where he thinks he’s got the best chance of adding to his list of trophies won and he’s not turning that down for less money and a lower chance of success.

This notion of him having some kind of romantic connection to United is bloody weird.

He’s not motivated by romance. He’s interested in literally two things, possibly three:

1) Champions League titles
2) Ballon d’ors
3) Wages
He’s motivated by his massive ego, and 1 and 2 can also be achieved here. He does have some affinity to United believe it or not, despite his antics with us.

Romantic return and Ronaldo?
Yeah no. And he would lower his wages? Of all the things not happening that one wouldn't happen the most.
What's his affinity to United? Haven't really noticed it.

I’m not saying he has some romantic connection to United, far from it, but I believe he would come to us if given the choice between United and City. Either way, we’ll never know.

 at people thinking he'd come here instead for 2/3 of the wages.

Some of you are blinded by fanboyism.

If he signs for city he had better get the Gary Neville tunnel treatment.
I hope Sir Alex shuns him also if this goes through.

People have already fallen for it.

There's a United fan I'm following on Twitter and he's ranting all day about how we dare 'turned him down' and 'feck the glazers', etc.

It's nauseating to read.

Well the news now is that Ronaldo is also offered to us. But no bid from us yet.

So what's the deal now? We won't sign him and pay him, yet he is a traitor and is not allowed to join City?

That feels like some crazy ex girlfriend shit. Your ex doesn't want to commit to you or put out for you, but goes batshit crazy when you start dating her best friend.

I think if he actually goes ahead and does this, he would have well and truly broken his romantic ties with United. He always had one (and there is enough evidence of that from the past) but I don't think the Glazers would have been happy to have him back at United with his wage bill and image rights.

Once you take United out in England, he can only go to City if he wants to maximize his changes to win trophies. It's sad but the Petro-dollars which fund City and PSG are going to become more and more irresistible for players, specially when other clubs are struggling and trying to cut wage bills.

Put it this way, Ronaldo is so miserable and desperate to leave Italy, that he's willing to consider lowering himself to joining City.

We should be more sympathetic.

It isn't like he can afford to retire, like Phil Jones has.

Ronaldo is a highly individualistic player. Messi might very well win more Ballon d'Ors and is probably considered a better player amongst most people neutral to United. If Ronaldo can keep winning more Champions Leagues than Messi, it's going to play in his favor when people consider who's the best of them. That's why he's going to City. He's not going to care one bit about his United legacy. He's not going to care one bit about getting booed at Old Trafford either. He's going to care about his relationship with SAF, which I cannot see is going to be broken because of this.

Players just manipulate media for their own good. Fans just went along when that suit their narrative but players choose what suit for themselves. Loyalty is just a idea that went out of the world millenium years ago.

And our own past-prime number 7 doing a lil South America travel round, with quarantine, jet lag and fitness issues he may be available in October. Rashford also needs multiple weeks to even be able to go for 90m matches. CR would do us sooo good right now

This thread is a mess. I'm surprised he's going to City, I thought he would show a level of loyalty by not doing that. But people trying to blame the club by not going for him. Have we learnt nothing from Sanchez? People were slating the club for signing Cavani on a 1 year deal last year and he was 3 years younger than Ronaldo is now.

I might be wrong, but I don't expect him to score LOADS of goals. I don't think he suits Pep's style at all.

People still thinking he has any kind of affection towards Utd when he's on the verge of signing for fecking City are fecking mental.

He's going to score a last minute winner for City at Old Trafford and celebrate by taunting the Utd fans and kissing the City badge and we'll still get posters on here going " oh but deep deep down I'm sure he still loves Utd, leave him alone!"

Huh, time to reconsider that one? With Cavani supposedly missing 1/2 of the season, if not more.

I gave up. Guess it's the defence mechanism for his fans to cope somehow with all this.

To me the worst thing about this entire scenario is that Ronaldo has allowed Manchester United, its supporters and Sir Alex to be ridiculed. I cant believe he did this intentionally but surely he must have known how rival supporters would react? He witnessed the hate and envy shown to United and he saw the same thing with Real Madrid so he will have been fully aware of the sentiment and emotions such a move elicits. If this move happens it proves that his highly inflated ego and sense of self is more important to him than the warmth and affection of the Manchester United fans and the high regard in which he has always been held, and clearly more important too than the affection he claims he has for us, the club and for Sir Alex.

Not really. Scholes, Xavi, Iniesta are still alive.
Honestly, their loyalty isn't particularly praiseworthy. All three were playing in their 'comfort zone', for teams that were winning everything under the sun, earning massive money in the process. It's not like any of the three sacrificed anything during their career for the sake of loyalty.

Those are the exception to the norm and these players were in some of the wealthiest and most competitive clubs in the world from day one. If either of them started their careers for Malaga or Blackburn the story would be different. The vast majority of professional footballers can't afford "loyalty".

The difference is, he is one of our own.

It's the homecoming, we all know he would benefit us, hell even if it was just the buzz of wearing his name on the shirts again and having the stadium swinging.

Imagine the opposite, imagine its City, so many wrongs on so many levels.

The pathetic thing is with how football is now, you know our players will be lining up post match to share a laugh, a joke, and a cuddle with him.

He is one of them. He made that decision a decade ago.
