I'm saying the people "trolling" him weren't worth replying to. A general statement about trolls affecting him and other sportspeople is fine. But to then mock back is him lowering himself and i don't think that's "Good on him". It's not rising above it.

He's very close to a comeback and for me, the best response would have been to simply get back to playing and resuming his career. That would have been good on him.
I do concede that basement dwellers probably have cause to feel offended by his comments on basement dwelling.

Yeah, it feels good seeing him diss the incels that send his wife and kids death threats.

And also the people telling him to quite his job. Feck 'em. As if healthy 28y olds have their meniscus removed. he acquired the injury doing his job ffs.

Someone's upset he's living in his mum's spare bedroom. Cya!
Im not living in Phil Jones mums spare bedroom, actually. I have my own house, but you will probably degrade me, just like your idol Jones, for it not being as lavish as his.

Why do you think footballers sign multi year deals?

As for Jones taking money.... which one of you wouldn't happily take the millions I know I would happily sit on the Man Utd bench for a fraction, just goes to show he is no moron
It’s also called a contract which it seems some of the brainiacs don’t understand how they work in football

He isn't stereotyping internet trolls. He is poking fun at people in unfortunate situations where poverty and no opportunity has forced them into a situation where they're still living with parents. He is out of touch with society.

Its possible for people to lump him with others and say he is a chunky money grabbing twat, just like Tevez, but that would be very unfair because at least Tevez had a set of knees that worked. Cant even say Phil Jones has been on the dole, because he gladly accepted millions more when he knew he has no knees. He should be ashamed that, with the millions hes amassed in his career, he still had the cheek to be a burden on our wage bill whilst trying to recover for a set of fans that don't want him here anymore. During any negotiation, if he had the decency, he could have taken a pay cut. Maybe he did? But hes obviously not confident enough to talk and let the fans know about it, if that indeed is the case.
Your pot noodle is ready Tristan!

You've written about 10 paragraphs on the subject so it's clearly touched a nerve somewhere.

For the record, and if you're desperate to be included in it, I was calling the people that found it hitting close to home losers.
OK so anybody offended by his comments are losers? You and others telling people how to feel about the comments is what got my attention, it's not your place to tell people how to interpret something and call them losers if they differ in your opinion.

Personally I’ve always hated pot noodles and Pepsi and haven't lived with my Mum since I was 18. So by default I don’t fit Phil’s stereotype, sorry, and I have no reason to be personally offended, that doesn't mean I'm not allowed to think for myself and think something is out of order. Does it have to affect me personally for me to have an opinion on it?

Welp, that's odd from a member of staff

Clearly, you cannot read. I said he can insulate himself from the abuse and ignore it - does he deserve it? No. Is the internet a pretty awful place (as the quote below me shows) - yes.

This is a PR exercise for him to get some sympathy. It's worked like a charm as everyone is just swallowing this puff piece and believing he is so hard done by. While I'm sure this knee injury is bad, can you explain his previous multiple other injuries? We are a professional sports club, he didn't get CV19, he didn't (thank god) get stricken with a horrible illness.

Imagine, for one second, on a forum hoping that someone you don't know gets a debilitating injury so they cannot do their job?

Imagine not knowing this person and what they have gone through injuries, a sickness that has affected their job, etc. Again imagine, that no fecking employer, ever would stand by someone like MUFC have stood by Phil Jones. Imagine defending a millionaire you've never met because someone doesn't align with your sympathy levels and wishing an injury where, should they not be able to do their job, would become homeless.

What a despicable little person you are.
So, you then know Phil Jones' story, life and struggles? What a bunch of bs. You're just an angry keyboard warrior who feels entitled to an opinion.

But how about a bit of empathy with one of our own players who has not only had a career threatening injury but many of his so called “fans” have sent supportive messages such as “get out”, “leave”, “stealing a living”, “rinsing the club”. I could go on. Very supportive fans. Very United. All whilst he was injured. Classy bunch.

all because they think that Jones stops them getting a shiny new midfielder

Was Jones the first choice CB at United at this time? Made 24 appearances in all comps. 18 in the Prem. Perhaps, this is bollocks?
11 appearances in the 13 league games immediately beforehand, including 9 full 90s, and off the back of being in England's 2018 World Cup squad. So, yes, he was a first choice CB at the time.

Yes, anyone offended by his comments is a loser.

All he's said is "the people giving me shit online will still be wasting their time giving people shit online long after I've retired into a comfortable life" and people have somehow distorted that into "Phil Jones hates the poor."

Sounds like you're white knighting for poor people who might not even be offended at all. Nothing wrong with pot noodles unless you are wasting your life away consuming them because all you do is trash talk people you don't know online.

But this is exactly my point, instead of addressing those specifically he’s (no doubt unintentionally) offended people who are totally unrelated and have no opinion on the issue.

I’ve had my say on him personally in the past, that’s unrelated to my opinion on what he’s said, I can totally understand some people being offended by the contrast he’s drawn between himself and those in his description, I have no idea why he’s done that. Naive and out of touch at best.

I could be, you might be right, but judging by a large response to what he said it’s at best on the lines of being offensive, it just didn’t need to be.

Why I reacted is that some were telling people how to feel and react to the quotes, people can form their own opinion, let them.

I’ll leave it there anyways.

Mate, the intention of his comments were to offend the people don't understand what a contract is and the degenerate troglodytes that send his family death threats.

Lots of people offended around here. Job well done.
It is so funny posters like @VanDeBank think he is a hero for it.
I find it funny that people taking offence at his comments are revealing themselves to be losers.

How has he not been specific? He has literally used the phrase ‘keyboard warriors’. That does not imply any notion of class, financial situation or employment status.

“When my career finishes and I’m enjoying my life - and by the way I’m fortunate that I’ll be able to do that - the keyboard warriors will still be in their mum’s spare bedroom, sipping Pepsi that’s flat, eating a Pot Noodle, sitting in their boxers, tweeting.”
The article then goes on to talk about internet trolling specifically.

Jones added on the impact internet trolls can have on footballers in the modern era: "In this society we’re living in at the minute, all the racism and stuff that affects mental health - I’d just say be careful. You don’t know how it’s going to affect players: physically, mentally, emotionally.
In the short time I’ve been an active member on the forum I have valued your posts because you are generally one of the more level headed and reasonable posters amongst the knee jerking, hyperbole and straw clutching but I can‘t help but feel you are way off the mark here.

His trolls aren’t all basement dwellers though are they. I’m trying to be constructive with you but it’s obviously not what you’re looking for

Not the folk that say he's a bit naive/unware about poverty. I think those are missing the point, which is to kindly tell morons to feck off.

This is like criticizing someone for being unaware of obesity induced diseases for making a "yo momma's so fat" joke towards someone that deserves it.

There's a lot of people getting really angry at Phil who aren't making that argument. They certainly think "keyboard warriors" was directed at them. Why get upset if he's not insulting you?

Just for the record he said mums spare room, not mums basement. Not that It makes much difference, but it is an example of how his quotes have been misquoted, misconstrued and taken out of context.

Phil Jones shouldnt have been given a new 5 year contract. We can all agree with that. Whoever did that should have been sacked. However if you are Jones you are not going to turn it down. Put yourself in his shoes. £80k a week for doing feck all. We would have all done it.

What an utterly shitty post. Why would he negotiate against his best financial interest? Taken a pay cut? It’s up to the club to offer less money and then up to him to refuse or accept. What world do you live in?

The club is not some sort of religion worthy of sacrifices from players. It’s a business, and he is an employee. He negotiates for his best interests and the club for theirs.

Your “anger” is misplaced. Wear some pants and put down the pot noodles.

A bit weird, that people who find it offensive might have not abused him nor live in his basement, drinking flat pepsi. How exactly do they reveal themselves to be losers?

You might consider of which ilk the most offensive posters in this thread are.

I have the occasional pot noodle, I'm very offended by Jones' comments. I'm trying to cut down on expensive takeaways Phil, so sometimes I allow myself some cheap junk food as a treat, OK? The modern day footballer who has all their food prepared for them wouldn't understand. Post is not serious obviously...

You and many others seem to think that people aren’t able to form opinions unless the comments directly offend us OR unless we are in fact the keyboard warriors he’s attempting (and failing) to address - which is nonsense.

The only person that can explain his comments is the person who said them. Until then he’s left it open to interpretation.

The cafe can have pages of arguments over literally anything. Fascinating.
I’ll tell you what’s fascinating, the fact we can’t say a bad word about Phil Jones but we are allowed to slag our manager off tactically and personally in every thread.

I wish the manager got an ounce of the protection Phil gets. He gets more protection than the Panda’s does Phil.
