Fantastic movies, fantastic entertainment. Rather watch infinity war movies than sit through some of these artistic oscar crap highly praised by connaisseurs.
... or that boring, overstretched, formulaic piece of crap Scorsese produced 2 years ago.

Didn’t they sell them rather than grant rights to them?. Surely this has absolutely zero chance of success, especially against the lawyers Disney will hire.
Saw someone say that this has happened before with other characters and the end result was just more money to the estate.

Nothing will really happen but it'a somewhat interesting.

Sure it was Batman from DC. Same lawyers trying it, and Disney have hired the same lawyers to defend I think.

While we're airing some grievances here, I got to say I really dislike Ryan Reynolds. He's one of the most irritating feckers out there. I should say, the characters he plays are exceptionally irritating. Obviously, I don't know him from a hole in the wall. But his brand of comedy is unbearable. I've never walked out of a movie at the cinema in my life, but I came damn close during Deadpool. Like nails on a fecking chalkboard.

Looks fun. It's probably anathema to everything said in this thread, but I hope it comes to Netflix so I can watch it.

I also actually like Ryan Reynolds. It's a sort of humor I can (generally) appreciate.

It's Free Guy. It's a pretty fun movie. If you liked Ready Player One. You'll like this.
Although it looks like Free Guy would be like the worry free, fun version of Ready Player One.

I did really not expect getting a reference for this kind of movie in this thread. Thanks @berbatrick! ;)

I'm not knowledgeable enough to conclude whether he's right or not, but what he says seems like the truth to me.

This also explains the lack of gambles these days. If you're gonna invest 100 million, then you better be 100% sure that the movie wont bomb. As long as you get that initial platoon of people who faithfully will watch a movie based on the title(or studio) alone, then you're at least gonna break even, even if the critics and audience both hate it. Then there's the second platoon of loyalists who, very much like Apple and Nintendo fanboys, are so determined to like something that they will never be able to make an unbiased viewing.

The fanboys are the worst. Marvel could make another 50 movies and people will flock to and praise every single one of them.

Think he's spot on.

This is bullshit. Plenty of mcu films have received justified criticism in the past. Incredible Hulk, Thor the dark world, iron man 3, guardians 2 etc.

I suppose the question should be did it affect the box office numbers? Was there a discernable difference in the numbers between a good marvel movie and a shite one?

I would imagine not because people are invested in these movies regardless of the quality.

But the only reason they are invested is because of the the general high quality across the movies.

World be a lot more like it. I don't think
High quality? Unh?

Great marketing for sure.
A lot more likely

I doubt anyone on the world would ever say " I want to see a really high quality film I wonder if there is a Marvel film showing"

The superhero genre has run its course, virtually everything people want to see done has been done. I mean the only thing that would even excite me at this point would be an all out Justice League v Avengers film.

Hollywood won't move away from it until everyone is sick to death of them and they find another money spinner.

I'd disagree, there have been quite a few attempts to build the same success as MCU, the X-Men franchise or Justice League films, Universl's Dark Universe etc and none of them have had anywhere near the success of the MCU films.

High quality is a subjective phrase, but as movies in their genre MCU films are head and shoulders above their competitors and you can guarantee they all have great maketing.

You talk about success, this is not correlated with quality. For the genre, i.e. brainless popcorn blockbusters rollercoaster rides, they're fine, but from a cinematographical perspective, they offer very little. They're not high quality, by any metric imaginable.

That’s fine, but I was responding to the statement that their success was down good marketing and it’s a lot more than that.

I didn't say their success was down to marketing. I responded to someone calling them "great quality", whereas the only "great" thing about them in my view is their marketing.

I imagine people's investment (and in turn the box office numbers) would diminish if they released a 4-5 Thor Dark Worlds in a row.

I've tried to come up with what this might be and so far I'm struggling. With the popularity of Game Of Throne I've been surprised at the lack of big fantasy films, I was expecting Hollywood to do Lord Of The Ring remake yet there's been nothing.

A wave of video game based movies? They haven't properly tapped into that market yet.

Great entertainment?

Given they do something significantly better than their competition (DC, etc), there's clearly something Marvel movies do well. And it's not just marketing, the other 'franchises' have their own big names and hype trains, and Marvel had to start from scratch themselves as well. But e.g. DC movies often get panned by critics and Marvel movies often get positive reviews (actually positive, not just less negative; and from known critics).

So there has to be a positive qualifier than can be used here, even if it's nothing like cinematography, directions, vision, or anything that speaks to the artistic side of filmmaking.

Yeah thats a good shout. We've seen a few with the sonic and the recent pokemon films and now there's a incoming Mario movie.
I dunno. The quality of them has been generally terrible. People complain about MCU but they are light years ahead of the video game movies in general. There also isn't a sole property that a studio could mine like Marvel. Maybe the new Avatar movie generates renewed sci-fi interest

I've haven't watched any of them, so that might be super shite. Good point about the sole property stuff.

It will be interesting to see what numbers will be for the new Avatar. It seems like sci fi films have been relegated to the second tier and tbf the big studios have kind of tried with the likes of Blader Runner 2049 but they just seem to bomb.

Exactly. I love the MCU movies, but am also happy to acknowledge they arent for everyone, and some people turn their noses up at them. And they blow most movies based on games out of the water. Struggling to think of a good one. Silent Hill is pretty creepy I guess?
