He's basically turning Brighton into a mid-table club.

He's not my first choice, but I would be prepared to take a gamble on him. His sophistocation especially in attack is something I'd really like to see her. The question is whether he has the personality to handle this squad. For all Ole's faults, he's shown himself to be an excellent man manager, and the current United dressing room would be an incredibly challenging one to manage.
Your first sentence is spot on. Brighton are a mid table club because of Potter. He has been successful and overachieved all his managerial career. He also has shown that he can get players that are seen as decent playing good football.

No doubt about it Brighton play a better brand of football than United. I think that describes it all considering the quality of the teams in comparison.

It’s mind blowing the difference. Take yesterday for example they went 2 down away to Liverpool yet still played pass and move football all the way from the back.
This can obviously lead to mistakes against top teams like City last week when they went 0-3 down quick yet he changed one or two things and after that matches City all game. The possession was 50/50 in that game and while it was 4-1 it shows that the players believe they can play football even against the best.

Id love to see him with better players

I know absolutely nothing about him but I say hey why not?

Seems like these German clubs keep going for these young managers who make themselves move up the ladder even if some have never even played the game before-

I'm not really sure why we can't do it with the younger managers over here.

Given that we have the worst manager in the league, I see no reason why appointing an up and comer like Potter would be anything other than a progressive move, that's exactly why I don't expect it to happen.

I think it's strange logic to think we should let him go elsewhere. If we're interested in him then we have to be looking to move quickly on it when the time is right for a change.

Absolutely no point at all thinking he has to go to a West Ham or Everton. What do we learn in addition to what he's doing at Brighton where he's taking them from relegation fodder to a solid side? He's not gonna win the league with said teams. Those sides are closer to Brighton than they are a title winning side in terms of quality of individuals, profile and transfer spend.

There isn't going to be any guarantee beyond what we've got at Premier League level, unless we wait for him to get a move to another top side at which point our chance is gone. Maybe he needs a bit more time at Brighton but not necessarily to go somewhere else in my opinion. You can't get everything, if you're going for one of these upcomers that's doing miraculous things at lesser profile clubs it's about being the one to take a risk in the knowledge that literally any appointment is a risk and the upside is huge.

I wouldn't complain if we appoint him. He would be an exciting appointment and definitely a much better coach than Ole. Just have doubts if he can handle the pressure. On the field United may have been a parody for last 8 years but the pressure managing United is 10 folds in comparison to Brighton. 2 or 3 losses and pressure becomes immense.
How did Pep handle the pressure at Barca, for example? Some managers rise to the occasion, some dont. Moyes did well at a midtable side but couldn't take the step up because his tactics and mentality weren't suitable at the top.

Thing is you never know with clubs the size of United, Bayern etc - a well prepared manager can come here and be swallowed whilst a novice can do well. The good thing is we have a board willing to protect a manager they believe in and the British media won't be as vicious on him as they would be on a manager from the continent.

We have a good side, with young upcoming exciting talent on the up and we are primed for success if we recruit well in the next twelve months and that includes the manager.

I'm a fan of Potter, and the way he gets his teams playing football.

When he was managing in Sweden, I was recommending him to mates who support a few different clubs at the top of league one or the championship. None of whom really fancied him as they'd never heard of him or the team he was managing! But he fully deserved his chance over here and I'm pleased for him at how well he's taken it.

I think, with his style of play, he's one of the few British managers doing well at unfashionable clubs who's suited to a top 6 side - unlike the likes of Warnock, Pulis, Dyche, whose pragmatic style suits the level of club they've managed at.

I definitely think Potter deserves a chance at a bigger club, but it'll be a gamble for them as he's never managed players of that ability, or clubs with that level of expectation or media scrutiny, so only time will tell whether he's capable of success at the very highest level. But I'd love to see him get that chance as he deserves it.

Brighton play some excellent football and he comes across very well.

0-2 at Anfield and they kept believing and really should've won it in the end.

I don't think we'll go for him, the board probably feel it's not worth the risk after the moyes disaster.

Personally I think why not I'd love to see what he could do with our squad, he'd be easy to get give him an 18 month contract, if it doesn't work we move on if it does it could be very good.

Probably better suited to the Spurs job right now. From Brighton to us would be too big of a jump, the expectation jump would be mammoth.

Saying Potter would crack under the pressure of managing United is a load of nonsense, the bloke has a cast iron belief on how he wants his team to play and literally never deviates from it.

We have appointed a worse manager for three years who cracks under pressure on almost a weekly basis.

You only need to see how his Brighton squad of players played when under the cosh at Anfield vrs the difference Ole's expensive bunch of players fared in the same scenario.

I love Ole as a United player but as a manager he is levels below even a Brighton manager ... it almost beggers belief at times.

Problem is if he goes to Spurs or Arsenal it's our spot in the top four that he could take. The jump might be too big but let's not forget that so will be the quality he will have access to not to mention resources to bring in better players.

His ability and bravery to play that type of football at Brighton no less shows what he is about. And we should accept that no manager provides a full proof guarantee that they would succeed even those not making the big jump. Whilst we still have Sir Alex I think, if he is confident in his own abilities, then Sir Alex could be a good sounding board and a source of moral support so the weight of expectations won't be so overwhelming.

We have no real way to gauge he could even make the step up to Spurs or Arsenal, they have their own pressures. He may have more quality at his disposal, but can he work with someone like Ronaldo? Can he fit him in his system as well? We literally have no real way of telling as he's never even managed close to our level.

At least unlike our manager he has his system and sticks with it no matter what.

Would I take him here? Probably not.

Yeah - combine that with what @Abraxas said and you got three ways he could prove his worth to the more cautious people.

1. He goes to a slightly bigger club, that's expected to be at least safely midtable. That wouldn't really give him more pressure (less, if anything; at Brighton, relegation looms large at all times), or any experience competing for trophies, and so the cautious people would still have doubts.

2. He goes to a big club just below the top 4. If he does well there, it would mean that the club enters the top 4, and that Potter would be much less interested in joining another top 4 club.

3. He goes to another top four club. In this case, he won't be switching to United either.

None of those scenarios really. Of course, it can be argued more generally that Potter needs more EPL experience; but he has been showing his quality for 10 years at three consecutive clubs now (Sondersunds, Swansea, Brighton), and even has European experience; so I would say that he is pretty much as ready as he'll ever be.

But it's the truth with all the other managers - that's why there is a high turnover in the job. United, right now, need someone who has a good system and who knows how to implement it and there are only three available: Conte, Ten Hag and Potter and by the time we get to make a decision on Ole I think Potter will be the only one available to us and the board needs to be ready to overlook the likes of Pochettino and Rodgers when that time comes.

This guy is on the verge of achieving greatness and I suspect it could be at his next club. Suppose it's Arsenal or the more likely destination Spurs; those two have the capacity to keep a good manager interested or in Levy's case sabotage any move away and the Glazers' aversion to paying out contracts for managers already employed will ensure that we won't get him.

weren't they hyping up the previous Brighton manager and the old Bournemouth manager?
Howe did really well, I don’t get why people bring him up as a negative as he just never got a shot at a bigger club. That doesn’t erase he did phenomenally well with BMouth.

Potter hasn’t managed hugeplayers but otherwise why not

Howe did well but I think he stayed too long at Bournemouth and the reality of a club quickly catches up with you then all of a sudden the stain of relegation becomes an albatross on a manager's neck. Besides didn't he have a sketchy recruitment record too? That plus his weaknesses in defense meant he was never a serious contender for a bigger job.

He's be a decent appointment imo. I'd probably focus on Zidane, Rose or Ten Hag first but wouldn't be too put out to wind up with him if as expected they're not available.

Would have potentially been a good appointment for an Everton, Spurs tier team imo. Still probably would for Spurs really.

He was a serious contender in as much as there was a whole thread dedicated to United fans suggesting him as manager which right now is no different to Potter

True but people aren't willing to overlook the relegation and Potter, if he doesn't make a move soon, will fall into the same trap. Players will be poached, it's a tough ask replacing them and soon or later it will catch up with them and they will stagnate then fall in a year or two.

I actually would. Everyone is a risk and he can be an Arteta-like appointment or even better - proven to be good in the league but not at our level.

All this talk of players respecting him is a bit stupid in my opinion. Every coach starts somewhere and Potter has proven with Brighton he's got the coaching knowhow.

Conte would be my favourite but certainly would go for Potter ahead of a Rodgers.
Are we calling Arteta a success manager now?

I may be accussed of being biased here but IMO Graham Potter will be the next England manager when Southgate goes. When that is only time will tell. England will win tournaments with him in charge because the quality players that We have will buy into his football philosophy and then the football public will see what we Brighton fans have had the pleasure in watching with our so called mediocre players! We may never have a good a coach again at our little club but it's been effing quality watching him transform a team which under Chris Hughton was defence based side to an aggressive front footed attacking side. He is tactically astute and a brilliant man manager who will have no problem managing egos. If I were a fan of your or any other club I would see it as an amazing piece of business making him your Head coach but thankfully for now he's with us. If you want him...imo it's now...because England will come calling!

Potter is sort of the opposite of Ole - a real system manager and one where the sum is greater than the parts.

As an example, look how he lost Ben White and replaced him with a returning Shane Duffy, and the defensive performances have remained just as impressive

I just said “no” after he managed that result yesterday but I’d be intrigued to see what he can do with better players.

2 things.

Dan Ashcroft is that his name? Seems to be very influential in their recruitment. That can’t be overlooked

Back 5. Do we want to play back 5 under our next manager?

I bet Spurs go for him next

If he's still available come the summer he could be a possibility. I'm not sure he would be the man to turn to if we ended up in such a crisis that we actually sacked Ole.

If ole takes us to another top 4 finish playing similar to how we have been with no consistency than we should deffo be looking at him in the summer.

Hopefully doesn't get poached by anyone before that.

He is a risk because of a lack of experience at top clubs, but Poch did alright from Southampton to Spurs. People are saying he needs to go to a Everton first? Didn't we hire Moyes from there, look how that turned out. We also hired Gaal and Jose, seasoned managers, but little return for us. We then hired Ole, next to no experience, no tactical knowledge, he has done well and probably taken us as far as he can, but he managed to get us 3rd and 2nd despite a weak CV. Any manager we hire is a risk. I would risk Potter, his philosophy breeds modern football, i especially love the way he can get his team playing 3 systems in 90 mins, and they do it well. For me, Potter or Haag can build a project, I'm more nervous about Conte (who would probably get results in year 1 and 2, but look to leave) and Zidane who has a great CV but i was never a fan.

I don't know how Potter will do at big clubs.

But sometimes some managers can do it with no names player believing in their plan whereas doing that with big names might be a different issue.

It's ridiculous to suggest he can't do it with big names.

If there is one thing that harms big names' reputation and tests their patience, it is playing boring defensive football. You really think Ronaldo would rather buy into Solskjaer than Potter philosophy?

You really think any big name player likes to see opponents run circles around while he can't touch ball?

Wherever Potter goes, he is not going to command respect by who he is, but by what he knows about football and how he wants his team to play it. In the end, it's only thing that matters in long term. As we've seen with Mourinho and countless others.

You made a good point and I can agree with that. However I think it leaves him with little room for error if his approach doesn't quickly produce results and the players faith would eroded faster than when similar progress were made under more established manager.
I do like what I've seen so far though. Imagine seeing his pattern of play being executed by Sancho, Rashford, Ronaldo, Mason

I'd take him over Rodgers and Poch to be honest. We'd still be mental to hire him over Conte mind but this club's incompetence no longer surprises me.

I don't know. If they pick Potter or Ten Hag, it would mean they thought more than 2 seconds about the next manager. That would be a huge improvement over their last few picks.
