Just hope our players are ready to do what he says. It could be quite a shock going from what we've been doing to running their arses off all game every game

And it could be rough going from square passing and passing back to not doing that. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for this appointment, but a bit worried that we're going to be shite at what he wants us to do

I hope he’s the kind of manager who yells in players’ faces in the dressing room/training. Most of our players need that.

This again... Our players need a coach. The way they are man managed is different for every player. Saying they need someone who just yells in their faces is such backwards ass archaic bullshit (otherwise Roy Keane would be a great manager).

This is the guy, this is exactly the guy. Why only interim manager?
If he does an excellent job, I’m sure it’ll be easier to add a year to the agreement. He’s in his 60s too, so I imagine he would accept a rolling contract

No. They need to be yelled at. New hair cut? Yell. Dance on instagram? Yell. Pass backward? Yell. Walk around on the pitch? Yell.

Chill mate

I would expect some growing pains and players needing time to get accustomed to the physical demands of Ragnick's style. After Chelsea's game, there won't be any big games for a while, so a relatively easy run, which is a good opportunity for Ragnick to implement his style

Have you looked up his managerial record besides the sell-side fluff? He's hardly done anything noteworthy. I hope it works out.

I'm a German (Munich born) Bayern Munich fan, I've known him pretty much since he started coaching Schalke 04 and almost won the league in the early 00s. I dislike him (similar to Klopp) because of how he talks a lot of shite when he was managing our rivals, but I have to admit that he is excellent at his job. The main reasons why he hasn't worked for bigger clubs were: German/BL managers were not as "hyped" and proven back then as they are now, also Rangnick has preferred to build up clubs from the bottom (like Hoffenheim/RB), as well as he usually demands total control over his clubs (he almost went to Milan a few years ago but he wanted to much control there). Someone like Nagelsmann was a lot less proven than he is for instance, doesn't make him a bad signing for us (Bayern) currently though, does he?

Most excited I've been about a managerial appointment in my lifetime given I was born when Sir Alex was already manager.
Me too, man. I am absolutely pumped. Just can't believe the board actually did it. To see how he's going to transform us on and off the pitch will be something to behold. Finally, we have an actual football person directing us. Welcome to the modern era, Manchester United. Now we can talk proper DNA.

Yes, Nagelsmann proved that he could take RB Leipzig to the next level as manager. Rangnick did so in a different capacity. I would be happy for him to join in a consultancy/DOF role. But it's probably part of a package that Rangnick is insistent on. We'll see.

The hipsters are buzzing with this but I'm not too sure about Ragnick. He's been managing for almost 4 decades and has little to no silverware to his name. Valverde would have been my choice but its just for 6 months so we'll probably be fine.
The guy turned down interim manager for Chelsea because he said being an interim for 4 months would give him no respect. He's not going to be here for 6 months, he's gonna be hear for 2.5 years. And it's as much what he's going to do after he's interim manager that gets me excited. He could totally transform us, on and off the pitch and pave the way for real progress. He's the perfect manager before either of Ten Hag or Poch, I only see pure joy from this appointment. Well done, United. Finally, you did something right.

So Rangnick's first game should be Arsenal, right? Not sure how much can be changed in few training sessions but for sure it'll be a different atmosphere at Old Trafford coming into the game to the one lately. We haven't won at Old Trafford in PL since Newcastle game on 11th September, awful

May take some time but these are quality footballers we're talking about who I'm sure prefer to play in a proper system. Fred, Sancho, Donny, Bruno should shine. Ron will need to adapt a bit but I only see him benefitting from it. Varane, fine, Lindelof fine. Even the obvious candidates like AWB and McTominay could seriously improve. It's not as though they lack grit or energy. Fitness is the biggest thing for me. Ole tried to get that into them at the beginning and we dropped like flies. But that's probably also because with Ole we were headless. Both for the mind and the body when you're well-drilled, I'm sure it's a lot easier. Plus I'm sure he will manage the squad better. Personally, I'm thrilled and in disbelief. Can't wait to see what he can do now.

Phew, glad to see he’s got his badges, so you know he’s good.

Of all the names linked. This has got me the most excited. Looking forward to see what he is about.

Has there been any actual confirmation? Not seeing anything on the club’s twitter page

Anyone who was knocking United for not getting Conte when he was available.

Would you now consider Rangnick a better fit?

Rangnick is better at giving the club a professional setup and direction. Conte might be the better coach, but looking at the lack of strategic planning United had, Rangnick should be more valuable in the long term. Still think Conte might have gotten a few points more than Rangnick will get this season.

Why Rashford? You don’t think a manager can get him to press? Wtf?
He's been Ronaldo-lite in his laziness for the last 18 months.

And if he even gets Rashford to do it, what about Ronaldo? You need to press as a collective. One guy not being arsed unravels the entire thing and makes it a piece of pass to play through.

I hope to goodness he gets us to finally become a pressing team. I've been waiting for over a decade to see us become one.

I also hope he's the type who will go out to dominate games regardless of the opposition. Sick of seeing us park the bus like minnows in big games. That was one of the best things about van Gaal. He always tried to dominate the likes of City, Chelsea, Liverpool, etc, and it gave us great moments like Juanfield and the 4-2 derby.

Don't agree with people writing off some of our players already. I strongly believe that under a competent manager which RR obviously is they can be coached into being amazing "cogs" in our machine.

One of the biggest problems with Rashford's pressing is chasing lost causes.

A real coach should help in that regard but he needs to work harder in general.

They are only lost causes because we don't press together in unison at the right time and in the right areas. That's what the coaching will deliver.

You need willing runners. The rest is coachable.

This. We can excuse some of it to injury (running with a bum shoulder can't be pain-free), but Rashford definitely picks and chooses when he wants to run and put a shift in. When the whole team is designed to press as a unit, one player can't decide its time to turn it off because that will leave holes for the other team to get through. Some of these players need to be put in their place. Either you have the mentality to do whatever you can to help United win, or there is more than enough depth behind to find someone who will

It's unbelievable Ole wasn't sacked sooner. Truly relegation form.

Yep, I’m sick of being outplayed in big games. Time to find a style of play & stick to it in every game.

How does that work with Ronaldo? And Rashford?

It doesn't.

It's not how much you press, it is when you press, and how you execute it as a team.

Players have to be accountable for their responsibility. If you're not closing down players, you're marking a player or blocking passing channels. Pressing isn't just about running about, especially as a forward, then putting in tackles.

This is seriously a great appointment and something I’m shocked the club did. Ralf as interim until the summer until we can get our main priority made so much sense that I thought our board wouldn’t do it

Are they not important?
Of course passion is important. It's such a given that you have to want it, that it is not even worth discussing it. Expect Rangnick to bench anyone who does not show the workrate expected from him. Same as any top coach does. They simply don't talk about it a lot, because it is a boring prerequisite. They have other things to talk about usually.

Rangnick might be, as far as football knowledge goes, arguably the most competent in German football, ahead of the likes of Tuchel and Klopp IMO. He was the OG "hipster manager" in Germany and his teams, as a collective, were always insanely hard to play against. Biggest question mark would be if he hasn't been overtaken by his peers since he hasn't been working as a coach for a long time, but he has excellent reputation as a sporting director as well. I would think he'd be an excellent choice to make you guys compete at the very top again.

Klopp himself sees Rangnick as the best German coach btw.:

Yeah the sporting director thing might be a good move. The Athletic just says consultant though I'm not sure what that means. Consultant doesn't sound like a title with a lot of power.
