I don't really rate him to be honest always thought he was overrated. Hope to be so wrong of course but don't see a top class player in there.

Very poor and has been since Ronaldo came in. Just looks like another striker playing on the wings. Not creative, unpredictable or hardworking enough for the position. Give me Dan James over either winger there tonight or in any of our recent games. If we worked harder and turned the ball over much faster in deep positions we’d be so much more dangerous on the counter. If we worked harder we could also keep much better control of the game. It’s like pinball with the ball coming back from the lads. No press. No tracking. No creativity. No goals? What’s the point?

Think he was taking up good positions tonight but his confidence is at an all time low, he's trying to force everything.

What happened to his shooting?

When he first came up, you felt there's a real threat with every shot he makes.

Sometimes Mason can look good with the ball at his feet, but if you've analysed his game over the last few years you'd see that he's always got an unforced error and a sloppy pass in him. It's like his mind just gets lazy for five seconds. See tonight as an example; he played a square ball inside direct to a Villa player. Even in his very good games he's still prone to doing this. What Greenwood has is a lot of time to mature. Rashford, on the other hand is nearing 25 and should be about there already.

Starting to worry for him for the first time. Probably needs to leave the club to achieve his best.

The kid is 19. He's got the natural gift of rapid football thinking that many players like Rashford lack. He'll be fine

I agree if he simply cannot smash the ball from far out. But I've seen him do it, so I've few complaints. If we're talking decision making, let's look at the collective performance. Lindelof tries to bring a ball from the clouds down like Maradona with a defender breathing down his neck. Bruno keeps making risky passes at the edge of his own box. Rashford repeatedly tries to hold off his man when he's been mauled time and again. There were a lot of unforced errors on display tonight and I thought Mason was one of the better ones. Shaw being the best, Varane close second.
The collective performance is shambles, but for me, Rashford and Greenwood are too selfish and too unintelligent. Try to line up the shot, but if it isn't on then they'll opt for the pass.

I've been unhappy with Bruno for a long long time, but I suppose a large part of that is down to how we're unable to get the best out of him. Stick him in the City, Chelsea or Liverpool lineup and he'd be annoyingly good.

I feel a bit disconnected with how players are viewed these days. Rashford the generational talent, Greenwood the generational talent, that's who they are and there's not much room for alternatives, they'll always come good down the road or something like that. By all means, it should hardly be ignored that it's a big ask, in terms of the situation the club is in, to perform at a high level considering that players who should be in their best years aren't close to performing well enough (Maguire, Shaw, Bruno etc). Stick either of them in a well functional team and it's not as if they wouldn't improve. Though, is it really that unlikely they'll both fade out ala Alli at Tottenham? I mean, people should hardly underestimate the levels required to keep going once you reach a certain point. Rashford is on a massive wage, and Greenwoods contract, considering his age and the level he's at, is huge as well. It's fairly easy to lose that extra edge after getting comfortable, and the two of them can easily be accused being a bit too comfortable these days. There's a reason the club has reached an agreement with the national team regarding including him in squads

He’s 20. He’s an elite talent. The club have given him OGS who barely developed him, and now his confidence and desire looks shot. We’re not the best club for him or any other elite talent.

This is fact. No “getting a grip” required. Feel free to argue to the contrary. Perhaps you could give examples of how well we’ve developed Amad, another supposedly elite talent. Or how other good young players are progressing well here, like rashford?

unpopular opinion but whole heartedly agree. How many youngsters have achieved their full potential staying at the club? Genuine question.

So greedy and selfish with his tame pot shots that have a low percentage scoring rate at succeeding compared to a high-percentage scoring chance inside the box. He isn't as good as he thinks he is.. If he wants to become a top great player he needs to show something other than the predictable one-dimensional cutting inside and shooting because the opposition defenders and goal-keepers are wising up to it. He needs to develop and add a more creative element to his game to take his game to the next level otherwise he will be another Rashford at 24 that hasn't developed since they burst onto the scene. You can blame the coaching as much as you want personal responsibility comes into it too.

He isn't a number 9 like Rangnick has said so needs to develop his game and become more creative and unselfish.

having two greedy selfish wide-forwards is a massive problem and unworkable on any team (you might get away with having 1 but not two you'll get found out). Sancho is the only one who tries to create something for the striker (which I don't blame Ronny or Cavani it's the lack of service which now people are hopefully seeing the reason why with two-wide forwards who are so selfish and greedy like Greenwood and Rashford)

Saka for Arsenal gets a lot of goals but he is absolutely dynamite in his creative output and creates a lot of chances for Arsenal. He isn't as quick as Saka but Saka is developing better and could yet turn out to be the better footballer long-term.

i would love to see Greenwood under a manager like Pep. As Pep would be going mad on the touch line if Greenwood was as selfish and greedy as today. And tell him to cut it down or he doesn't play as simple as that. No pass, no play.

no way Greenwood who's job today was as a wide forward should have almost double the shots as the main striker today which was Cavani. It's a recipe for disaster

It's not fact that he's 20, an elite talent, that OGS was his manager, or that his confidence or desire looks shot? Be specific.

Or perhaps you disagree that we're not the best club for him due to these circumstances?

the only facts there are his age and Ole’s having been his former manager. United is definitely the place for him. It’s up to him to prove he belongs there (in my opinion.)

Greenwood’s best attribute is finishing. The closest he got to the goal last night was 3 shots from 20 yards plus. It’s not that complicated. He is being asked to be a wife forward hugging the touch line. That’s a waste.

What did we expect really? from the first moment he was in the senior side Ole was gassing him up saying he's the best finisher in the club, one of the best he's ever seen etc.

He told him to constantly shoot, now we're seeing his coaching develop. The biggest issue for me is his shooting isn't even as good as it was when he was younger.

He now barely uses his right foot either. Even when dribbling he prefers to cut back onto his left nearly every time. He's becoming predictable.

I once thought he would become a generational striker, i'm really doubting this now.

I still have hopes for Greenwood personally. Yes he is quite narrow minded in his play but I feel that I see more desire to work off the ball from him and a willingness to get involved in build up play than I do from some of the others.

He certainly needs coaching to help him make better decisions. What doesn't help is he's coming through in attack that is not well balanced at all. There are no players in their prime in our attack who are well rounded players and so for a young player coming through the mistakes he makes are harder for us to absorb.

I think we need to make some decisions as to who we want to invest in, in terms of time to develop and then go from there. I'd personally still invest time trying to develop Greenwood.

I really worry that we are in the process of wasting a world class talent with poor coaching and a terrible team around him. It also doesn't help, that he never gets to play up front. I feel like if he was playing for City, he could easily get 25 goals in a season, simply because of the chances they create and the fact that he wouldn't have nearly the same pressure to make something happen.

The thing is, if he passed it wouldn’t be a waste. He was getting wide and beating men, getting into good positions and then bleh.

Same issue as all our wide forwards for some time. They get stuck on one play that works for them and then teams adjust.

Then Jose told them to defend, the world get pissy about it so now they don't defend either.

Such a talent and I do fear his development is stalling, but there is one thing that pains me about him..

hes a striker playing as a wide winger, not even a striker playing as a right forward but an actual winger running up and down the wing, defending and swinging crosses in....our best finisher according to those at the club is being used as if hes mark Albrighton. He's not going to learn how to become a better striker without actually being developed as a striker.

Also when you look at our best form in the last 3 years, it came when Martial was playing that link up cf/false 9 role. Which is a role I think greenwood can play because he has got the touch and passing to play it. As good as Cavani is his touch, dribbling, passing is by far the worst out of our options.

He might have been selfish yesterday, he might not quite be ready to start every game as striker, but heaven forbid we actually start to develop him as a striker.

Why is Amad being brought into this? He's not done anything to suggest he's an elite talent and been injured. Rashford clearly improved under Ole until the wheels fell off and the surgery - he's been shite since. Ole got Rashford and Martial netting 20 goals in a season, each.

We've given Greenwood more chances than any top club or manager would, same with Rashford. I think at some point there has to be some personal responsibility for form or just not adapting your game.

It would be and is a waste...completely...because if we have him playing closer to goal we actually use his primary talent effectively. It’s like when we started playing Cavani out wide to accommodate Ronny as a main striker or playing James from the right (He actually looked decent from the left) or playing Rashford from the rightplaying Fred as a holding midfielder when his value is in his high pressing or playing McT as a holding midfielder when he has no composure and hides from passes.

Players have their best positions. We tend to fit square pegs in round holes.

Klopp solved the problem of having Salah and Mane as wingers by realising you lose their value by having them too wide. He got width from the full backs and it’s why Mane and Salah score so many as inside forwards and Liverpool are not over reliant on a number 9. Klopp said as much in many interviews- you adapt your philosophy toget the best from the players you have.

Greenwood as a finisher is no worse than Mane but cannot get himself in scoring positions because he is stretching the pitch. It’s fuking ridiculous. We bought Sancho to play right but he is the same- an inside forward. If we don’t have the fullbacks that can provide width then we need a formation and players that can stretch the pitch. That doesn’t equal moving out most dynamic and potentially most clinical finisher AWAY from goal.

We need to get a proper CDM, move out fullbacks on and then allow greenwood to play closer to goal as an inside forward, play Sancho from the left and use Cavani as a hard working 9 till we invest in a long term replacement. Ironically thistype of approach might solve the Rashford issue as well.

Greenwood is being wasted.

Nobody is writing him off, but you have to have your head buried in the sand to not admit he's going backwards at present.

Great in deeper areas but he's so annoyingly selfish when he's near the goal. How many times did he cut in and shoot right into the keeper yesterday?

Lots of comments that players are frustrated with his greediness. He needs to improve link play and bring in others. Good talent but needs to make next step. Becoming way too predictable

Quite literally multiple people have suggested he should be moved on or was never good enough in the 1st place?

He's definitely struggling atm though, just like nearly everyone in the team.

The way he plays in the middle of the park (despite some horrible cross field passes) makes me think he might be suitable for a midfield role, at least he looked the most comfortable on the ball of all our player touching the ball in midfield.

I thought Greenwood had a good first half. Again, he started out as one of the only players willing and able to switch play between the flanks and worked pretty hard, but then he retreated into "cut inside and shoot" mode and lost his threat.

He needs to keep working on varying his game up (as does Rashford) but they both looked much better when they held the width in the first half and therefore had more options available i.e. cut inside and cross, cut inside and shoot, go outside and cross, cut inside and slip the full back in, go outside and slip the full back in to shoot etc. I feel Greenwood ought to be on the left really but Marcus is pretty useless on the right so it would only really be an option for me if Sancho is playing.

This is Redcafe, I wouldn't take everybody serious. People love exaggerating.

As you say though it's not just him, the whole forward line seem to have some weird voodoo going on at the moment.

Remember when Ronaldo used to do this when he was of similar age. I was not part of this website then, i was with another, but i remember people calling him to leave the club. Im not saying Greenwood will be Ronaldo but he has just turned 20, you don't expect 20 year olds to have great decision making. Hopefully, this will be coached out of him under RR, i dont think Ole wanted to coach this out of him as he wanted players to produce a moment. Greenwood is very talented, the way he beats a player, his vision, his technique, decisions are his weakness, maturity should fix this, we need to be patient in my view.

Mason Greedwood.
Came here to see if someone had beaten me to this yet, gutted.

Actually think he's been one of our better players this in terms of his on the ball play and effort (never understood people calling him lazy...) but he is a greedy bastard often and needs to look for the pass.

This is the thing, you are looking at him purely as a goal scorer, is finishing his best attribute? Yes. But you're not wasting his talents, plural, because he has so many. Would I prefer him closer to goal? again yes. BUT he's strong, he's fast, he's two footed, he has a great cross on him, he has a great range of passing, he's a very good dribbler. If he's needed to do a job, he can do it very very very well.

Currently we don't have any of the fixes you're asking for. So yes in a hypothetical world great, we get in a CDM and have our full backs provide the width. But right now to fix our lack of width our two wingers need to push out wide. We don't have full backs who can provide the width consistently. If Greenwood just improved his decision making a bit (which ironically was another great attribute of his time in the youth teams and his first breakthrough season) then yes we'd be missing his finishing, for the rest of the season, but he would be an asset to the side.

With the squad we have currently, what would you propose as the fix, or where to play him? Up front? Ahead of Ronnie and Cavani? More of an inside forward, with Dalot or AWB providing our attacking width? Dalot is looking fine, but not great at that.
