I also don’t think you’ll have anywhere near the luxury RA has given you… the whole club structure will change.
Haven’t they made the most losses this recent financial year?

Either way their fans have been used to the way RA funnelled money in to the club. I don’t think they’re quite prepared for how a sustainable football clubs books need to look like. The new owners might have decent chunk of change but they’ll be playing by a whole new set of rules now.

The bright spot is the playing squad is in relatively good shape, so a drop off wouldn’t be immediate.

Just thinking long term, I wonder if Tuchel would be happy to manage Liverpool post Klopp. Say in two years time? Gives Gerrard more time to keep practicing elsewhere, or slip. :nervous:
Can’t lie… definitely wouldn’t be opposed to this.

We haven’t “endlessly spent” in ages. We’ve been a sell before buying club for years now. And that’ll likely continue.

Sell unwanted players for large fees to partly fund transfer targets.
You owe him about £1.5b.

You clearly were still heavily reliant on him.

It depends on the new owner. Todd is all about splashy big name players. If he is part of the equation, it could be bigger signings than the Roman era.
Very much doubt it.
You’re not going to get another owner like RA. He’s literally took all your debt on board himself and continued to prop up the club.

You’ll have to operate within some boundaries in the future. I’m sure you’re capable but it’s dreamland to think you’ll crack on as normal

What about the Rudiger and Christensen contract renewals now though?!

Really hope their new managers are a Hicks and Gillete/Kronke type who doesn't want to dump hundreds of millions into the club.

I mean ideally, I'd like the owners like the Oystons and the club does a Bury and goes under.

Todd has been very shrewd with his part ownership of the Dodgers. He signs huge stars that the revenue of the club cannot afford. He uses his spending to gain a higher percentage ownership. I think he is up to 27% from 20% now from doing this. If he is on the ownership consortium, I doubt he changes his spots. Who knows? It will be a wild ride.

The Saudis are absolutely kicking themselves having tied themselves to another English club.

Christenson is off I believe. They could still tie down rudiger and they probably should as he suits their system down to a tee. Big loss if he leaves. Thiago Silva can only roll back the years so long.

Makes sense. He is going to struggle to bankroll them now and these sanctions will last at least Putins lifetime i’d have thought if theres no palace coup

With the money he wants what’s going on now though will Rudiger get what he wants? Will be interesting to see

Seems he won't be seeking to reclaim the 1.5 billion he loaned the club. Looks good for Chelsea.
Yes, but they’re only a force because they could operate like a club that could go $2 billion into debt with no worries. That won’t be the case anymore. Their structure is completely unsustainable now.

Thank you for the link.

Soft power is very hard to project without some sort of legitimacy granted by the projectee. For example, Iran and North Korea and Cuba are virtually incapable of projecting soft power in the West, because all channels for doing so have been blocked through various form of sanctions.

The likes of Russia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar... all have been granted legitimacy to one extent or another by the UK government and the European Union, to the extent that they can attempt to project soft power through cultural institutions (of which sport is one channel), but that legitimacy is the sticking point for me.

As this episode with Ukraine has shown, soft power doesn't really do you good once legitimacy is stripped away. Sponsorships by Russian institutions have been canceled. They're being kicked out of international sport. If Saudi Arabia was to invade, instead of Yemen, an innocent country like Israel, it's sponsorship of Newcastle would do it no good and they probably would be forced to sell. Which begs the question as to what benefit sportswashing brings beyond financial means (taking the link you provided as fact, the needle doesn't really move that much for Qatar/Saudi, and if it did, that's your sustainability argument right there for FFP).

Finally, you've admitted the term sportswashing doesn't really apply to Abramovich... Which is one of my main points, that it's not a term that has a clear definition and is applied consistently, if major outlets/journalists can incorrectly use the term. Money laundering has a clear definition and it's very simple to identify. Sportswashing is deliberately ambiguous.
I’m not sure there’s much validity to your criticism. If you want to cosy up with the west to get richer then obviously there are rules to the game. The fact that you lose something if you don’t follow those rules doesn’t negate it’s value. If we’re talking about the oil rich Arab states they need to diversify because oil is declining in importance. They’re seeking to secure their own economic future. There is a bit of regional rivalry mixed in too. I don’t see the analogy to Russia here. ‘Sports-washing’ is a term used to describe a type of soft power play. The question is if we want it present in a realm of life we’d like to see as apolitical as possible.

Personally I don’t think I’ve ever used the term sports-washing in relation to Abramovich. Some people find his involvement in Chelsea morally corrosive, the same as the Arab oil states being involved in the Premier League.

Regardless, this is really an end of an era. Feels like Chelsea won't be the same without him all honestly.
He hasn’t been allowed to live in Britain for a number of years now, is rarely seen at Chelsea games and has never given an interview. I see him more as a ghost than an icon of Chelsea. Putin can have that affect on you I guess.

All proceeds go to “victims of the war in Ukraine”. So presumably families of Russian casualties as well?

The “net proceeds” bit is interesting too. How does that work when you’re selling a club that owes 1.5 billion quid? He says he’s not interested in money owed but what does that do to the balance sheets when the club is sold? Bound to be some smoke and mirrors here.
He’ll be fine and (very) rich.

Deepthroating information to Howard Nurse.
In 18/19 - the year prior to the pandemic - Chelsea made a loss of 102m after tax. From March 2020 until August 2021 football finances were put into meltdown at clubs operating in reality due to zero crowd revenue and tv money rebates. How much did Chelsea spend in the October 2020 transfer window following that 102m loss facing the prospect of another year with no crowds? 175m NET - over double what City spent and triple what United spent. By far the most on the planet. Following a 109m loss. During COVID.

And it’s just the 152m loss this year. “Self sufficient”

I can’t imagine it’s going to be an easy sale. Some one will have to find a few billion worth of funds for a club that needs a new stadium and is only just about self sufficient.

personally think this will drag on and on.

From a selfish perspective I hope he leaves and they sink back in line with the rest of us financially. Let them dine at the same tables and we’ll see how much success they have.

Roman says "all net proceeds from the sale" will be donated to the victims of the war in Ukraine.

If that's the case he should just let independent lawyers deal with the sale of the club and set up a trust to distribute the money away from any links with himself or Chelsea FC. This way all proceeds can genuinely go to the Ukrainian people.

The fans that are defending him and thanking him for his time and service to the club are proof that sportswashing works.

i can now see the decision to part with the likes of tomori and abraham on the premise they will buy buy buy coming back to bite them. Rudiger silva and christensen on their bikes, what will they do without a blank cheque for kounde or whoever?

The 2 named in public Wyss and Boehly are worth about 11 billion combined. Supposedly theres talk that another 3 or so are coming with them should it happen.

On the surface Chelsea will be richer than we are under Roman, its just whether they'll invest as much. The American fella might if his history is anything to go by at his nba team

He doesn’t condemn the war in the statement nor does he state it’s going to the Ukrainian people. It’s deliberately ambiguous. I suspect he’s feeling the heat of Putin and the west circling on each side and decided he doesn’t want to be sipping polanioum tea.

He's done ok out of it for 20 years! He couldn't exactly foresee the events that unfolded recently.

But you are right that it might have just been for shts and giggles I guess. Have loads of cash why not buy a football team. Its probably for several reasons but yeah because he can was probably one of them. But sports washing (yeah its a stupid sht name) is across a lot of sports. Olympics etc. Its generally still done for the reasons I first said. Maybe some of the owners just did it for the love of the game for all I know but still a lot of it has to do with nefarious interests
Easier to access London markets and legitimise your dodgy money pouring out of Russia once you've dumped a billion quid into an institution based in the capital of the nation. Suddenly he's just a businessman, wanting to build a life in the city. Oh now he's bought several properties.

Reason why London is known as the laundromat in Russia, place to park and wash your ill gotten gains, legitimising them.

Still, he has been their owner for so long I just can't imagine another one's name attached to them.

Roman used Chelsea/his general London investments to move his image away from Russia and Putin (see how aggressively he attacks any suggestion of Putin links over the years) and whilst it’s not sportswashing in the same way Abu Dhabi or Saudi do it, the fact he has not been sanctioned yet kind of proves it’s worked.
It is sports washing.
