That was pretty bloody average. It’s not the worst we’ve played this season but what a terrible mess we are in.

Oh the feck. Just terrible. I don’t see a way through any more.

Hard to imagine any decent coach coming here, much less the calibre of player we need.

Perfectly fine with this, as long they are going to lower the ticket prices and put them all on general for every game.

But they're not going to do that are they? You get so much more your money's worth going the boxing.

Club's an absolute shambles. All our players are such bloody wankers, I can't stand the sight of them, they make me sick.

You’ve identified the primary issue. Everybody in the club are all bloody wankers (except the tea ladies and I’m sure a few others are maybe not wankers but the rest definitely are).

Back to the fun Oleball tactic of aimless side to side passing to the wings....then back again...nobody willing to take anyone on, nobody playing the ball into the box, nobody in the box making a run...fun times. Lots of possession but nothing happening. It's existentially bad. So disappointed I paid for a BT sport month pass tonight, thinking to myself that I'd get the first QF leg in the pass. When will I learn. I'm usually a happy bloke, honest.

With top 4 realistically out of reach, that's season over for United.

Up there with the Moyes season as the most disappointing of the last 30 years?
Yeah and it's the kind of season we need to get used to. Thinking there's an easy way back from this mess is a pipe dream.

If we're ever in that situation again, can someon at least break one of those 'injured' Atleti players? If they're going to spend 15 minutes of a mathc on the ground, at least take a red and have them earn it.

Yeah I said early on second half, we aren’t scoring tonight. We didn’t create anything, we were basically hoping for a set piece to come off
I actually gave up when we got the corner at the end. What's our record? 1 goal in 160 or something? It took us over 100 to get one goal. Maybe if we got 39 corners in the second half, I might have woken up a little when we got the 40th because we'd be due one then.

disappointingly predictable

Atletico are far from an elite team but they were fairly comfortable after the first 20 mins I thought.

As much as I like Rangnick we havent put together the performances i hoped we would. He's had to contend with Greenwood gone/Rashford may as well have and players like these were key when Ole got big results against teams.

Just not enough quality in attack or defence

Fred was great but aside of him it was all very average to poor

Yeah , completely agree. I started supporting United in 68, I ‘ve seen us relegated, I seen us play badly more times than I care to remember but when everything is taken into consideration this side is the worst, most soulless , uninspiring bunch I have seen.
You'd think they would play for the fans. For the kids that go wearing their favourite player's name on the back of their pricey shirt. These players are privileged to play for Manchester United but they appear not to care. Soulless is about right.

F..ing hate Atletico! Such a boring, cheating, full of scumbags piece of shit team. Simeone can go to hell with his stupid black suit and tie or rather hang himself using it. And don't get me started on that joke of a ref. Madrid time wasting from the 50th minute, 6 subs and he adds 4 minutes!! Hope the next team Madrid face beats the crap of them. HATE THEM!!!

The most passionate and disappointed people in the stadium tonight apart from the fans was Darren Fletcher and Ronaldo. Says all you need to know.

We were done by a streetwise hardened CL club, something we are miles away from being. Rubbish really.

Thought we started decently but couldn't score when on top. They suckered punched us with a goal and then we never really looked like scoring.

Fred was playing turbo charged in the first half but essentially they clamped down on Ronaldo, who seemed to have an odd licence to pop up miles away from goal, which was lovely, but meant we had nothing to aim for.

The times it did drop for a shot came to the likes of McTom who was never going to shoot.

Rashy looks woefully short of confidence and playing on the side he's never excelled wasn't promising.
Sancho some good work but doesn't really have the pace for some of the moves he tries.
Maguire low on confidence too. Caused shudders of anguish in the crowd late on with some scary passing and lumbering.

Oh well, we're not really good enough for this competition right now, but we'll be back one day.

Just not good enough against teams like this.

First half was good but that daft goal was a sucker punch and they are the worst type of side to play against when they're 1-0 up. Hard to breakdown and timewasting constantly all second half. Our subs did nothing and we just ran out of ideas.

Fair play to them as it works but I hope the feckers go out next round.

Maguire and Rashford, you are both shite.

Fred by far motm
Genuinely class performance from him mostly in the first half but the only player that looked like he cared.
Sancho looked ok in parts but we are so disjointed and that has to come from the top regardless of how long Ralph has had to sort it out.
Rashford an actual disgrace when he jogged on……and then jogged about for 20 mins
0 interest from me in the rest of the season.
Give a shit or not lads You don’t care so why the feck should I ? you had numerous fecking chances and you blew them all
So sincerely from me to you “feck off”
Hopefully most of you won’t be here next year

I've read that this was a "humiliating" defeat, but was it really? It was a painful defeat, absolutely, but it's not like there was a gulf in class and we got done by minnows. This United team can turn in 1/2 of a performance. The first half, we were good. The second half, we were poor. Atleti was mediocre over both halves and edged it. We aren't very good. Beating Atleti was never a safe bet.

We need to be better. We need better players and better coaching. Currently we are a team lucky to have been playing in the CL at all.

Has anyone seen a match in which a team has been improved by 5 subs? It seems to me it always leads to a loss of shape and cohesion.
We were heading out of the competition, so Ralf had to try something.
I'd have replaced 8 players if I could because the 11 players who started were incapable of scoring a goal against A.Madrid.

Usually when I check passing stats after a game, they're pretty good. Even though I go in convinced that a player was misplacing half their passes, it turns out that they have a 95% or so passing success rate.
Checking Whoscored for how players did --
Rashford -- 9 passes, 44.4% passing success rate= 4/9 passes completed
Cavani -- 4 passes, 50% passing success rate. Not good but too few passes to be meaningful.
Mata -- 83% passing success rate -- 5/6 -- guess missing one is allowed, so good
Matic -- 23 passes, 100% passing success rate. Kinda good.
Pogba -- 8 passes, 87.5%
Ronaldo -- 35 passes, 94.5% passing success rate -- missed 2 out of 35
Sancho -- 55 passes, 83.6% passing success rate -- made 46 out of 55
Bruno -- 35 passes, 80% passing success rate -- made 28 out of 35
Elanga -- 12 passes, 66.7% accuracy -- made 9 out of 12
McTominay -- 48 passes, 83.3% accuracy -- remember when Scholes reliably made 95%?
Fred was worse -- 48 passes, 72.9% accuracy

DDG only made 68% of his passes, but Oblak made only 44% of his -- so maybe pass completion doesn't really matter (seems like it would watching Rashford give the ball away). Now that I look at it, AM was worse than us. They just scored one more goal. Sad.

Love the gung ho changes ragnick makes, breath of fresh air, doubt any manager I any of the top leagues do things like that, not that they have to mind.

Most unlikable team in decades, went out with a whimper. Athletico will get smacked up next round, done the minimum but was enough. Grim times but that's the cycle, have to accept it.

They were street smart in the end. We had a lot of the ball and contested the game well in many areas but struggled to create much with them sat back and got sucked in twice and they scored two goals (one ruled out). It was kind of like rope a dope. They wanted us to push up and chase them which we did. The first one they played it around the back across the keeper waiting for us and the second that counted Elanga let them break trying to win a foul and Maguire decided to vacate his position high up which he often does. See Spurs 6-1 and Liverpool 5-0 for the most comical times and opened the door for them.

Typical shithouse tactics and a weak ref.

Never a good combination, especially in Europe but we've been here before. Just not good enough on the night.

It's the hope that kills....I thought we started great then poof it was over when the ref did not call the 2 or 3 fouls on Elanga.

The 2 was awful. How can he take Elanga?

Fred and Varane were good.

Pogba can leave tomorrow if he wants, one of the best things about today was him not starting.

Saddest part is I am not upset really. Jaded.

Can't believe they're harping on about another manager, after all the shite they spewed under Ole. This is not a manager problem, and it's baffling to see what I perceive as smart people (at least Rio and Hargreaves) think that all or most of our issues would be solved with a Conte or a Tuchel, to be honest.

The great news is this is likely going to absolutely crush Manchester United's stock price finally forcing Glazer's hand to sell the club.

They raise good points about a coach but think Scholes might be valuing the role TOO highly. He played under a brilliant manager and that has shaped his views but I would respectfully disagree.

Your best eleven isn’t much different from ours on form for sure but your squad is nowhere near the same level. If we struggle to compete with Liverpool and City over 38 games with a superior squad and manager I’m not really sure how 1 man can really close that gap for you unless your talking competing for 3rd?

Fred and Mctominay had a good game on the ball but they should be cover for each other not a duo. Fred should be the starter to be paired with a new DM. From that first offside goal where they so easily bypassed the both of them you got the feeling there was no way we were keeping a clean sheet, especially not with our back 4. They were right there too, it wasn't like they were miles from the play, they were right there and got bypassed with a simple passing triangle, they both switched off and thoroughly outsmarted while within 5 yards of each other. At least one midfielder has to be the defensive reader. They can't both be average at it. Oh yeah and bin Maguire. No DM can make him look good.

At least the Board can't hide behind any "success" this season to invest less.
Get the best manager (not just "safe" manager), give him enough warchest support, and get rid of many of these fecking overpaid primadona.

Under a Klopp or a Guardiola, it's likely it would greatly help.

I mean, yeah? That obviously isn't going to happen, so who would you suggest then?

I can't see a single manager available out there that would turn the tide for us. I can see a lot of managers out there that can paper over the cracks for a shorter amount of time, but that doesn't do anything to address the deeper issues creating the cracks in the first place. What I was trying to get at (without having seen all of the post match due to regional blocks) is how the players repeatedly avoids scathing criticism while the pundits harp on about how world class managers will fix all of our issues.

Not really upset or surprised. We’ve got some good players but lots of average ones. Mct Fred and maguire would not start for even athletico.
