Watching a video showing the UCL final goals from 05 - 2020 on YT earlier and I must have forgotten just how crap Edwin was for three of the five goals we conceded.

Seriously tarnished my view of him.

I've tried arguing before that he wasn't a great shot stopper and people weren't having it.

He was definitely a great keeper though.

You're judging his whole United career on 3 finals? Two of which the whole side was completely outclassed by arguably the best club side of all time? Harsh.

These were among the only mistakes VDS ever made for us. He made far less mistakes than Schmeichel or De Gea over their respective times with us. I don't think I'd personally put VDS ahead of Schmeichel or De Gea because I don't think his reflexes were quite as good as the other 2 but if I was to choose the most consistent of the 3 it would have been VDS. Ultimately all keepers make mistakes over their careers, no matter how excellent they are.

Was terrible in those finals but immense for us.

His kicking was class. Controlled the penalty area well. Ate crosses. Communicated.

He wasn't the best shot stopper but didn't have to be with Brown, Rio, Vidic, Evra.

Watching a 'compilation' of someone's career is always pointless and offers a completely skewed perspective. My 8 year old has just got into United and recently watched (okay, was forced to watch!) the highlights of the treble season. I wanted to give him some proof that we were actually a good team, once! He now thinks Schmeichel is a complete donkey (because there are SO MANY absolute howlers during that season that seem to outweigh the moments of pure genius), he can't understand what I see in Keane (because he doesn't feature that much), nor why I've never even mentioned Jesper Blomqvist (because watching the highlights of 99, he looks like Pele).

Tbh it’s a shocking view mate. There some absolute clangers from all our keepers in last few decades. De gea has had worse moments.

Yeah, no..
Edwin was one of our best ever signings.
Immense keeper who had it all, we could only wish for a keeper of his stature to be our keeper today.

I remember Schmeichel conceded 13 goals over 3 a period of consecutive games once.

Tarnished my view etc....

At least he was a vital reason why his teams used to reach those finals.

Watch videos of the goals DDG has conceded in Europe over the years and you'll understand what an overrated keeper actually looks like.

Excellent organiser, commanding at set pieces, Always calm, confident but never was the best keeper in the world or even in the premier league. Never had a worldie in him like de gea, neuer, Cech, schmeichel where he could win you the match on his own. Still better than de gea though.

Great servant for us but let us down in those 2 finals v barca. Should have saved the eto’o goal in 09. Can’t fault him for villa goal at wembley but that messi goal was bad from him and Pedro’s goal too throwing himself to the wrong side too early for no reason.

You should go and take a look at Schmeichel treble season bloopers then.

VDS was an amazing keeper. The most well-rounded keeper we had.

Genuinely think he’s got a case for being our best ever, I can see Schmeiks ahead of him but he was head and shoulders a better all rounder than DDG.

His positioning was first class. His shot stopping was just good.

I love the idea of an 8 year old in 2022 going round telling everyone how amazing Blomqvist was.

So your saying he is overrated on the basis of three mistakes?

Get out. Edwin is our greatest ever, I won't be convinced otherwise. Some are you are forgetting we went 1300 minutes without conceding in 2009, and not to mention the Anelka penalty save that won us the CL.

Schmeichel is probably our most overrated, and was a Judas to boot.

Crazy thread considering we have David De Gea as the highest paid goalkeeper in world football

He was a great organizer, great in crosses and had decent ball handling ability. But he was just an average shot-stopper.

Completely agree with this. Edwin was absolutely immense and had a great all round game and calming influence.

To be fair VDS in his final year was kinda massively declined so the goals we conceded vs Barcelona 2011 wasn’t really the best version of VDS, prime VDS could save them. I remember he made huge mistake against Everton or something in that early season which cost us 3 points. That’s why he announced a retirement because he knew he reached his limit.

Over rated doesn't necessary = bad.

That being said, Edwin was pure class. Seemed to get better and better with age and my favourite ever United keeper. No mean feat given I had a poster of Schmeichel on my wall as a kid growing up.

V.D.S was absolutely solid, rock solid. Organised, commanding, calming presence. Capable shot stopper if not world class.

Just look at our defensive records when he was our no1, and then compare them to our defensive records when he wasn't.

Yeah I think we won 4 league titles, reached 3 CL finals under him with 1 CL title.

With him we were the second strongest team in Europe after Barcelona during his time.

We have never been as good in Europe as we have been in this time.
