Jesse Lingard 'to leave on a free'

He probably wanted to leave and play but not to the extent of handing in a transfer request. That would not have been a wise move for him.

He thought his successful loan could earn him some playing time or he could get another loan.
He won't get a better salary elsewhere. So why forfeit the money for the last season, the sign on bonus and limit your options for the next destination.

Really the best outcome for Jesse was to see out his contract.
The best move financially no doubt, but it came with the risk of not playing much for 12 months. There can be no sympathy for him just because the worst case scenario has played out, it's not like that scenario was even particularly unlikely. He chose money, the club decided no offer was worth accepting over additional squad depth.

The narrative in here is that it's all Ole's fault, where the blame for him still being here is on Jesse for gambling with playing time for money, and Jesse for not being good enough over the last few years to convince interested clubs in making an acceptable bid.

If the World Cup was this summer maybe that would have forced him to move because I think he does still want to play for England and we know Southgate likes him.

But he probably figured he could waste a year here and move in summer 2022 and still have enough time next season to sneak into the World Cup squad.

I know he did well last year at West Ham but he is deluded to think he could come back here and earn his place back in the team and a new contract. He's been fecking dreadful in a Man Utd shirt for years and years.

I will never forget his screaming in that bus before WHU game
They did LVG dirty in that game. We would get 4th, Pep would miss CL, no Mourinho.

Just underlines how shockingly bad the decisions at the top have been.

After his spell at West Ham his stock was sky high. Could've easily have gotten £20m-£40m. But no, we decided to see out his contact, costing £xm, and then allow him to leave for free.

They've done the exact same thing with Pogba.

It's bizarre. I mean, I understand that the people making the decisions aren't football people, but this was purely a business decision. Do these people have a brain?

If Lingard had actually been given a proper go this season then he may have continued the form that transformed West Ham last season! Instead our two managers have continued with the same failing performers week in week out!

That being said- it’s time for United and Lingard to part ways!

To be fair to the boy Lingard, he put in some brilliant performances for West Ham United last season, he is clearly a talented lad who like many in recent times have been handled completely wrong by Manchester United football club, whether that's down to the managers or other people behind the scenes giving out big wages too early or just poor discipline or the long term damage of a man like Jose Mourinho throwing players under the bus - we shall never know.

It's a good point.

Which is why I'm so reluctant to really criticise any of the United players, especially the younger ones (Like Lingard). Manchester United has been like a ghost ship since SAF left.

I just hope ETH can put us back on course and be the leader that we've lacked since SAF left.

He's absolutely nowhere near good enough for United, and yet he's been paid handsomely more than any other club would pay him for absolutely years.

His West Ham form was a purple patch, he's always been that kind of player. There was even a wee review into it... https://thepeoplesperson.com/2020/0...ard-only-had-one-purple-patch-of-form-214699/

He doesn’t strike me as the most mature 29 year old and that’s being kind.

He’s been at United since he was a little kid and he’s no doubt part of a clique which has a bit of power.

Take him out of his little universe and drop him into a new club in a new city where he hasn’t got any of his mates to bounce off and he hasn’t got the benefit of the doubt of staff throughout the club and he’s a timid little weasel.
He doesn't strike me as the most mature person if he was the only adult supervising a preschool trip to the park.

I don’t want to be harsh on an academy player who is been with us all his life but he encapsulates everything that’s been wrong with us these 9 years post Fergie right till the very end of his contract.

I just hope the club and the fanbase have both learned a lesson here in not giving every average immature academy player fat contact after fat contract to preserve the so called value and the DNA. Only the players who are talented, have the right attitude and personality to play for this club should deserve such privileges.

There is a rot that has set in amongst the fanbase and the club where i see every other academy player is being hyped up to such levels you would think they all deserve to be in the team post Fergie. From paddy McNair to Brandon Williams, the standards required for an academy player has dropped down so much that even players who are poor technically and tactically are considered good enough for us. Mctominay is a prime example of that. A player who should be nowhere near our squad let alone first team has become a midfield regular.

I don’t see Liverpool, Chelsea, City or even Arsenal hoarding academy players who are below par but with us it seems fine under the name of DNA without considering the required quality and right attributes.

This is something we should definitely learn from. Inevitably we are in trouble now with not the best position regarding Europe, wages and trasnfer fee might be what can convince some players to play for us. However giving and academy graduate big contracts and bump contracts for fun is just plain wrong.

You are only a player for so many years and part of our clubs problem is giving squad players big contracts were only an idiot would take a transfer willingly.

Phil Jones for example is like our Winston Bogarde and who can blame him? Better for him & his family he’s on United’s injury table than Stoke’s.

Moment he is injured at a smaller club ‘which will happen’ his career is finished.

We’re pissing away £400,000 a month on him for the last 3 years let that sink in. Like Keane said he should have been out the door 2 years ago

Our "best player without the ball" was and still is one of the biggest bullshit lines on this forum, used to mask a very limited footballer who has been stealing a living from this club. Yes he has his uses absolutely, at a team set up like West Ham, who play on the counter and a limited CAM like Lingard can contribute with his running, but also mask his limited quality on the ball.

Take a look at City last night, they employ players like Bernardo, KDB and Foden, who are in a different stratosphere to Lingard, not because they are great without the ball, but because they are absolute magicians with it. Now if we have an ambition to get to that level, we can not accommodate a midfielder like Lingard, who can't hold on the ball in a high intensity game and passes backwards or side ways under the slightest bit of pressure. That has been evident since forever, but here we are the guy will turn 30 and is still on the payroll.
Yes he was/is, our best without the ball, it just shows how shit the rest of them were in this aspect. I am not recommending Lingard be kept, at best he was a journeyman player among many other journeymen, and no, I agree he is not among the likes of Bernardo, et al, then who have we got that is?
However he had 'a value' in his off the ball play, for at least three of our recent managers, that's all I am saying; if his prowess on the ball had been better then he would have a had regular place.

My point was simply that in the short term, as ETH seeks to make the transition he may be tempted to keep Lingard, at least another season, because he can do this one thing better than anyone else we currently have.

One of the worst aspects of our collective play is running off the ball/pressing, all our so called genius's want the ball to feet and go off and sulk if they don't get it, even Sancho is now showing the same signs and our back four, which has its faults to start with, gets even more exposed because of the laziness of those in front.

Lingard filled a hole, for a while, that hole is now a chasm and he does not even begin to fill it!

That hole should be filled with a new signing, not with a mediocre player who leaks things to people outside the club

Lets hope ETH agrees, but I don't see it being one of his priorities, at least not in the first stages of transition. DM and CB are the priorities for me!

Feck that. He has shown a small window of form at United when Jose was in charge and has been either average or awful before and after. It's a shining example of the state of the club that we've hung on to such an average player for this long. Lets not forget that the last month at West Ham his form dried up. It's a mystery that he's still a United player at the age of 29. Baffling.

Failed managers who have made absolute shit shows, failed to implement a pattern of play, and we struggle to score goals, which is humiliating for a Manchester United team. That Mourinho, Ole and Ralf thought he has his uses, should only make the case for him to leave even stronger.

He runs around more than the other CAM we have at disposal? The other options are Bruno, who I think is better in everything compared to Lingard, the third guy is Mata who should leave himself. I disagree that he offers something that is valuable.

As you said, it's a collective play, and much of it is down to shit coaching compared to the Liverpool and City teams who are a team coached by a world class manager and team. If ETH fulfills our expectations I think this improvement will be evident in every players game.

Lingard filled a whole, for a while, that hole is now a chasm and he does not even begin to fill it!
For a string of 10 games.

I can just see it now

We end up in the Europa Conference League, and Lingard goes to West Ham on a free and plays in a superior European competition

According to Moyes they never made an offer at all and if they had I doubt they even would have gone that high. Initially West Ham and United did the usual pre negotiation dance of we might sign him but we don't need him and we might sell him but we don't want to which was just bluff trying to establish some leverage. Jesse then proceeded to make it clear he wanted to stay and "fight for his place" even though at that point he was going to be returning to a side that didn't give him a minute in the PL the previous season and had just signed another attacker in Sancho. It was fairly obvious then that Jesse had made his mind up to run down his contract and that was confirmed when Ed pulled his usual extend to retain the value move in September and Jesse turned him down flat. Cannot blame him for looking out for himself but the reason he was not sold last summer and again in January starts and ends with Jesse.

There must only be a few weeks left on his contract, just pay it up and get him the feck out now.

No ffs, move on, get rid, let him go, never been good enough. These ex players are really starting to piss me off
Yup. Gary Neville and Paul Scholes were great players but their punditry is genuinely terrible.

Which is far better than the great big nothing we'll get for him now. He could have had a sweet deal at West Ham and be playing each week.
Not disputing, but the comment I was responding claimed we'd get 20-40 for him. Not a chance that was ever happening.

I wouldn't dispute any of that, even though I don't have intimate knowledge of it. But good insight nevertheless. I was merely questioning whether he was ever worth the 20-40 mil price tag. I don't think so.
