But that’s it, I rate Garner but people are asking him to go from Championship into a team that is aiming for top 4 minimum against some of the best teams in the world
McTominay went straight from the U23's to first team. Fred from Ukrainian league to Manchester United first team.

It is a big leap for Garner but unless we're signing two midfielders this summer he just has to be better than one of McFred. Both of whom had to make huge step ups themselves to get into the team.

I'm glad he has had a good season in the championship, but I feel like we should be keeping expectations realistic. We have such a huge gap to close at CM and I struggle to see Garner as part of the revolution at the position

Itt really is an outrageous statement to say that a kid in the championship is better than a bloke that starts for fecking Brazil.

I rate Garner, but his nationality isn't why he's not starting a Copa final.
Can you please specify that it’s fecking Fred who most of the time is absolute garbage. Someone might think you are talking about Gilberto Silva

I’m not one of those who think we need to sign only one midfielder. We need upgrades on every player, with Sancho and DeGea being the exceptions. If Bruno gets his shit together, he’s good enough.

Literally nobody in the entire first team is good enough to challenge for the title. Next season is about building a foundation, getting a team that can play together and who give everything for the badge. We are XI first team players away from winning the league. We are not signing XI players this summer. We will be lucky to get 5, maybe we sign 5 and 2 pan out.

Garner would not get into City’s starting XI; he would not get into Liverpool’s starting XI. We are so fecking far below those two sides, we need to be realistic. It’s going to take some shrewd signings, some luck they work out, ETH to resurrect a lot of our players’ careers, and players like Garner, Mejbri, Garnacho stepping up.

but would Garner get into City & Liverpool benches?

City DM/CM Starters: KdB, Rodri & B. Silva (Bench: Gundogan, Fernandinho)
Liverpool DM/CM Starters: Fabinho, Thiago, Henderson(Keita, Milner, Jones, Ox-Chamberlain)

So, the question is, would Garner get ahead of Gundogan & Fernandinho, or ahead of Keita, Milner, C.Jones, and Chamberlain?

If a 21 yo Garner, at his current level, after 18/24 months in Championship League, is as good as those bench warmers, then I think he deserves a chance to compete for a starting spot with United, against McFred.

Most recent example is Mount, after his loan at Championship club Derby in 2018/2019, he played 37 PL games with Chelsea in 2019/2020, can Garner do the same?

With us not having DM as it is and Matic and Pogba leaving I think Garner will be here to make up the numbers in the squad. We basically need 2 DMs.
I don't see us signing 2 midfielders.

His contract is 2024+1 I believe.
It doesn’t make any sense if we are not going to sign at least 2 midfielders for next season. If we have limited funds, it should all go to midfielders first.

- Garner is unproven at PL level
- Pogba and Matic is leaving in summer.
- McFred is not talented enough and can’t pass.
- ETH’s team play tiki taka possession football which requires good level of passing and movements in midfield. We don’t have any midfielders for that system
- Oh VDB can, but he isn’t really no.6 or 8 in Ajax? He can’t fill that role in PL anyway, more like ETH will use him as AM.

I meant those clubs’ full squads, so I’d say no, he’s not dislodging Fernandinho or Keita.

Pogba is leaving; Matic is leaving; Mata is taking a pension. VDB is a mystery; McTominay can run, win the ball and recycle it but isn’t a playmaker or really a defensive midfielder; Fred is the energizer bunny but has terrible passing and shooting. Garner gets in ahead of them in any side that wants to play the ETH way.

I wouldn’t know, I haven’t follow any Chanpionship football. How are their performance compared?

Garner at 21, avg stats as CM in Championship:
- 4 goals 6 assist (10 g+a)
- 7.07 avg rating
- 1.9 key pass
- 34.5 pass/80.9% rate
- 1.8 tackle
- 1.5 interception

Mount at 20, avg stats as CM/AM? in championship:
- 9 goals 4 assist (13 g+a)
- 6.95 avg rating
- 1.9 key pass
- 37.5 pass/76.6 rate
- 1.4 tackle
- 0.5 interception

Seems very much comparable to me. With Garner better defensively, and Mount better in scoring goals. Their passing and performance level is similar.

Exactly, I said this in another thread, if we bring in 3 new midfielders, 2 CMs and 1 DM, and VdB goes, then that means maybe Garner stays with Forrest if they qualify for the PL, and McFred will be backup to the 3 new players.

but if we only get 1 or 2 players in midfield, then Garner should be part of that setup (2 new players + McFred + Garner).

Agreed, and Garner is a CM, while Mount is an AM/LW/RW, so obviously G/A stats will favor Mount, but otherwise, very similar numbers, but to be fair I only watched 2 or 3 games for Garner this year, but I read some good reviews about him in here.

The only way he becomes PL proven is to play him in the PL, next season is going to be transitional and fairly bumpy in spots, let's get Jimmy and Hannibal in and give them a chance.

The hall is booked and the band are playing, it's time to see if they can dance.

All youngsters are unproven until they actually play. If ETH rates him, he'll use him.
You say ETH plays tiki taka and we dont have any midfielders for that system, but Ajax's current DM is their least technical player.

I think you have a lot of misconceptions on ETH. He's quite a flexible manager and doesn't have a set system. De Jong is a completely different type of DM to Alvarez.
"McFred" are better passers than Alvarez, especially Fred btw.

If we're an injury away from having to play Telles or Pogba CF, then we have bigger problems than "McFred".
I think we'll get one if ETH rates Garner somewhat during preseason.

Telles is an absolute disgrace, and our only CF will be 38y old next year. We're not signing 6 players, as other clubs charge us 20 million for just picking up the phone.

With both Matic and Pogba leaving I'm expecting that we recruit 2 new DM/CMs this summer, with at least one of them preferrably going straight into the starting 11, as well as DvdB returning for a final chance under ETH. That means that we will have 6 players for the DM/CM/AM positions when you include Fred, McT and Bruno as well.
Even though Garner has been solid enough this season I highly doubt that he will jump ahead in the que in front of any of those options. He's likely to end up last in peckin order and as a 3rd (DM) or 4th choice (CM). On top of that we have Mejbri who also needs minutes.

Garners best alternative is to be loaned out to another PL-side next season, optimally a promoted Forest, to get PL-experience and become a considerable option for us in the 23/24-season.
Lets not make the same mistake with him as we did with Tuanzebe who should have stayed at Villa when they got promoted instead of warming the bench for us.

Next summer Fred has a year left on his contract and will turn 30 so it might be a good time to sell him then, there will be a clear and final verdict on DvdB who may or may not cut it at United, and McT will either have adopted his play to suit ETH methods or needs to move on.
There is a potential path opening up for Garner with players potentially being ready to leave next summer, and himself getting PL-experience this year, but that path is not through staying with us as back-up option the coming season. Same goes for Mejbri if you ask me.

Currently Garner is a better player than anyone in our midfield. I've never been impressed with Fred, I don't care what he does for Brazil.
It is one thing doing it in the Championship and another thing playing for Man United who are still one of the top 6 teams in the PL.

The Championship is a much lower level and it is easier to look good than it is in the PL. Your statement is ridiculous.

The CAF complains that we let players leave to join rivals, tear it up and then sign them back for millions.

But also don't want to give them a chance and pass it off as doing it well in Championship but can they do it in the Prem, clearly i.e. not good enough.

He is not ready. Not really a baller as such and doesnt get involved enough. Needs a year playing in the Premier League where the pace will be a lot higher, hopefully for Forest. A 4th-5th CM choice at best

I do want him to be given a chance, he deserves it but people need to lower their expectations for a young player coming into the team from the Championship. He will only get better and better of course, but bigging him up to come into the team next season and make a huge impact is too much to expect of him.

If he gets 10 first team starts next season then that would be great and anything else is a bonus, but people will be disappointed to expect him to transform our midfield as he is still young and learning at the moment.

A good test for him today playing against a team that will be in the PL next season.

Huge chance for Forest and him to get automatic promotion now if they manage to hold the lead against Fulham. 2 points behind Bournemouth as it stands with a game against them to come.

Barely saw the ball in the 1st half, made only 4 passes.
Before this game Fulham were 13 points clear of Forest and are about to win the league at a bit of a canter. They have had 72% possession as well. It is no surprise that he hasn't really seen much of the ball tbf.

That Zinckernagel fella looks like a baller.

Garner better than Fred, is like saying Wellbeck is better than RvP. Where do you start debunking such nonsense?

I like Garner, he's talented and he could develop into that. Right now it's just wishful thinking based on highlight reels.

Agree with this. Like others have said, the dream scenario is for Forest to come up and for James to spend another year with them in the PL and see if he really can make the step up to the top level. If he stays with us it will be 5 or 10 minutes every 3 games or so and the odd cup game which won't really be enough.

Unless he's going to be a regular starter or off the bench next season, regularly clocking up 15/20 minutes as a sub I'd be inclined to send him back out on loan. Ideally, Forest get promoted and he goes back ther.

Fred is the Chamakh compared to Garner being the Welbeck actually.

Just get him back - another superb performance from him today. 2 assists for Surridge - one from a brilliant a corner, and the other from a nice run and a composed pass. He should be playing regularly for us next season - simply for his set-pieces alone.

His set pieces alone should enable him to take McTominay’s spot. He’s a similar profile to most of our midfielders though, desperately need a DM in the window.

With how few midfielders we will have in the squad by default next season I think he’ll probably be in the first time squad. It would be pretty nice if Forest come up and we can loan him there again for another season, though.

His stats today are hilarious so far.

13 passes / 7 key passes / 2 assists.

His set-pieces are unreal. He should model himself on James Ward-Prowse. If he can track his man and maintain his standard in delivery, he’s a huge upgrade on McTominay.

Huge game on Tuesday for them. Away at Bournemouth and they are level on goal difference 3 points behind. If they come up then he should go out on loan again. Unless we completely fail in our recruitment this summer.

Probably a good idea, but we could also find out whether he can step up in the Prem in our own team which has no midfield.

If it's a rebuild season and we don't qualify for Europe (likely) might as well utilize him in the first team.
