This. Should have been sold and the money (together with saved wages) reinvested or kept for this summers kitty. Our squad (mis)management has been unbelievably shite.
West Ham wanted him for peanuts.

It was funny the way he was sticking to the young lads when the players all walked on the pitch. You could interpret that charitably as him remembering how overwhelming it could be and doing his best to make them feel at home. But I couldn’t help thinking of the lad at school who always hung round with kids from the years below, because he needed to be a big fish in a small pond.

Never in all my years of being a football fan did I think that I could actively dislike so many of our players. There may have been moments where I thought a player was not the right fit for us and I preferred another, like in 08/09 I didn’t think Berba was the right fit for us and that money should have gone towards Tevez instead, but the feelings were never really that strong.

However, this current batch of players with guys like Lingard, I really actively dislike them and cannot stand them. A bunch of spoilt children who focus more on PR and getting journalists to support them than what they do on the field. The sooner we are rid of all of them the better.

Yeah then there was also the Toon who wanted to loan him from us. Either way, those "peanuts" was probably worth it especially getting his wages off the books, not? Especially since we barely played him and kept him around the squad (with leaks continuing etc.).

Or he still has a childish/immature mentality and feels the need to be with younger people.

Jesse's camp has no cause for sour grapes.

I still appreciate what Lingard has done for this club, especially in cup finals, but you can't have it both ways.

This season Jesse appears to have been a regular source for the media. Clearly Rangnick (and others) haven't taken that well and was never going to reward him. Actions have consequences: You want to post photos of yourself in a West Ham shirt, you want to let the media know you're peeved about not going to Newcastle, you want to tell Scholes the dressing room is a 'disaster.' All of that is fine. You're a free man, you can do what you want. However, you can't expect the manager or the club to like it. Expecting Rangnick to turn around and then give him a chance for a send off, after being undermined by him for months, was a bit mad. Shows how much of a bubble he lives in.

No sympathy for him, he’s been in reporters ear all season telling them what’s going on behind the scenes . Feck off

This is the same board who thought they could get 20M from Rojo, who refused to release Sergio Romero for 5M eventhough Ole had crossed his name out of 25 men squad, who thought if they refused 10M bid from Juventus/Inter Milan for Darmian another Italian clubs would come with higher bid. The board under Woodward was fostering toxic culture by keeping players against managers and the players own will all in the name of "preserving" their values on the balance sheet.

Remember this is the guy who got his media pals to print the sobbing story about him having issues and finally discovered himself after two OK- matches after that 1,5 years without goals and assists. They are trying to portray him to be some kind of great servant to United but apart from that FA cup goal he has overall been nothing short of a disgrace with his performances, leaks and general antics. He has leeched the club for years. Coming from the academy doesn't give you any freepass on this. You can understand from a financial POV that he didn't want a permanent deal in January, but it doesn't help his case against the club.

Good riddance to the most annoying and mediocre player post-SAF.

In bussines, you don't accept derisory offers...you just don't. Once you do, every club will take the piss when dealing with you. We were absolutely right to reject those offers.
Lingard with a year left on his contract was still worth £15-20m after the season he had with West Ham.

How the feck has he been a disgrace and a leech?

I get that he can be annoying at times, and his PR clearly isn’t up to scratch, but there’s no way he’s been either, he gave us very good squad player service for many years, sure he wasn’t of the standard you want from a United player but there’s nothing he can do about that. He openly wanted to go get football and when it didn’t happen AND he didn’t get the games here that he was promised it’s really soured everything, but that’s on Ole. It’s his time to go (well, last summer was but again, that’s on Ole) but he’s far from the things you just described, show some god damn perspective.

He’s also FAR from the most mediocre player post Fergie.

It's my understanding that neither Manchester United or JL has announced that JL will leave the club at the end of the season. Mata and Matic went through appropriate and respectful club channels, and communicated respectfully. This does not seem the case for JL and his brother. It's certainly not okay to announce JL wanted a "farewell" in the way they wanted a farewell.

It's going to be interesting to see if, when and how JL departure is announced. Time to bury it under other, more important news, and no messaging it out.

Yep, the previous decision makers, headed by Woodward were clueless. Handing out contract extensions and high salaries for players who have achieved next to nothing in the game/for the club.

For some reason I thought the offer from West Ham was in that region? Don't know where/how I got that info from. It depends on what you deem derisory and I do agree with you, to a point. We've been notoriously "bad sellers", but it all stems from handing our undeserved high level of salaries in the first place, IMO. That always puts the buying club/player on the back foot.

Although it’s hard not to read into Rangnick’s comments re training that Lingard is at least partially to blame for this underwhelming ending to his last visit to OT.

Regardless of the carry on this season and the fact there may be a bit of bad blood, if he is leaving in the summer I think it would have been nice for him to get a short run out. I know he winds people up but he’s been here since he was a kid and rewarding someone like Cavani, who showed little interest in being here, seems a bit sharp.

He isnt good enough for what we want this team to be so he should be binned, should have been years ago.
That is all that matters.

The very epitome of a celebrity football player leveraging his association with United for commercial gain

Lots of media reaction. Interesting how the journos are coming out to bat for him. Very interesting...

To be fair they probably aren't wrong. Cavani didn't deserve to get on.

I can only assume they have had a falling out. Oh well.

If anyone needs a lesson in why footballers or their PR teams might constantly leak and brief football hacks, this couldn't be any clearer.

Not sure why everyone’s so adamant he’s the leaker. It might have just been a one time little causal chat to Scholes where he mentioned the changing room isn’t good after being asked despite every single person on the planet knowing this. Not sure how people are using this to blame him for every leak that happened

His best season was 17-18 when he reached 13 goals and 7 assists. Scoring 7 goals and 2 assists in a run of 9 games in December, the only true spark of form as a United player. He then got his 100k wage after that and his form disappeared.

Just that idea that every player deserves some kind of send-off is itself the worst kind of sentimentality. We're in this position because we're not ruthless and we're overly sentimental, refusing to make clinical, cold decisions that move the club forward and instead leaning on past sentiment.

It just makes it much more believable that he was indeed someone who leaked info to them.

Has JL officially stated that he will leave at the end of the season or is it just his PR people letting a little out at a time.
If no official statement then why should he get a send off.
Personally I think he has been an acceptable squad player but his off the pitch activities have not helped him evolve.

Just to add, we look like we're going to the Europa League, not the Conference League. So he couldn't even get that right!

Deepthroating information to Howard Nurse.
Fascinating that the media spend 24 hours of every day slamming all our players yet now defend Lingard who has done the square root of feck all for this club in 3 years. He didn’t care about getting a goodbye in January when he wanted to go on a 6 month loan deal having refused a permanent transfer that would give us a fee did he? No. Instead he bleated on in the media about how unfair it all was and then wasn’t in the right state of mind to play the next game.

Let's not pretend that Ralf likes to keep comments behind closed doors, he's quite consistently displayed verbal diarrhoea himself in his press conferences all season. And let's also not pretend that Lingard is the first player to push for a move away and complain when it didn't happen.
You don't need to convince me about Rangnick's often questionable sense of tact, boundaries, and confidentiality, in information-sharing.
But it's still not equivalent, as the manager is actually tasked with giving press conferences and thus giving public answers to the questions posed by the media, the players are not. It's his job.

Also I'm not saying Lingard's behaviour is the worst anyone's ever done or anything, or that it might not be in part understandable. In fact I posted how I think the club (not Rangnick, who had signed off on Lingard going on loan) made a mistake not letting him leave and with the "relegation avoidance bonus" etc he has a right to feel aggrieved. It seemed like a last hurrah of Woodward-style transfer behaviour to me, inviting trouble.
But it's become very obvious people in Lingard's 'camp' and 'close to him' (and in light of recent tweets it's not hard to see who that is and how close they are) have been feeding the media all season. That is on Lingard, and managers will and should not accept it. He's lucky he wasn't frozen completely for this stuff.
Say what you will about Rangnick (and god knows I did  ), but he is an experienced manager who has shown a clear, consequent line of dressing room management in the past.

It doesn't make sense unless a football player is a stakeholder in any organisation I can't see why a send off is necessary.

Footballers are not their own consortium. He's a payroll number no different to an employee, if someone leaves an organisation an internal celebratory process can be done and that's the end of it.

Hopefully Lingard is able to find success elsewhere but being realistic it's not like Neville, Scholes or Rooney were leaving. Lingard has represented an era of football for United where the club has drastically underperformed but that has had no bearing on deferring his income or sponsorship entitlements etc.

Solskjaer made a bad judgement keeping him because how much would Jesse have likely influenced the likes of Rashford, Pogba or other members of the team with a despondent attitude. Ragnicks stance on players leaving is correct if the said player no longer wants to continue they should leave.

Just go..

I defended him previously, but all this telling tales out of school business was the end for me. He publicly undermined his manager so no surprise that he doesn't get a little cameo. This outburst from his brother is exactly why we need to get rid of Jesse Lingard, it underlines a lack of professionalism and cost him an underwhelming goodbye. I'd say he needs to sort his brother out, but it's not a problem anymore.

Its definitely a modern thing.

Rio Ferdinand didn't get a send off. Roy Keane didn't get a send off. David Beckham didn't get a send off. Jaap Stam didn't get a send off. Where was the send off for Steve Bruce, Gary Pallister, Bryan Robson?

Of course, its nice for players on their last game to be able to give the crowd a wave. However, the way this is being puffed up by the media and the player's entourage is strange.

By all accounts, if Jesse had had his wishes he'd never have come back from West Ham, or gone to Newcastle in January, and wouldn't have had a send off. So why the big moan now?

Because Jesse Lingard thinks he's the main character.
