The Varane story was from a different journo. Romero us a good source for Barca but he did in the past say United were the front runner for De Ligt. But he's currently gone a step further with De Jong, and is reporting the deal us almost done with United.
I think he wasn't reliable before 2021. I remember read it in their forum that Romero has been spot on about this season news.

Kessie is pretty far from the Barcelona DNA, letting De Jong go for him would be absurd. That's a really bad call from Barcelona if it does happen. They blew a boatload of money on Torres to end up selling De Jong, I guess Laporta will loose a lot of credibility after that (if true).
FDJ is on a big wage, I think that's one of the reason.

I'm not 100% believing it.
Romero might be tier 1 but I remember during the De Ligt transfer he kept linking us and nothing happened.

Don't get your hopes up lads

I've looked back at Romero's Tweets about de Ligt, and he never linked us that strongly to the player, certainly not as strong as he is to de Ligt. He only went as far as saying that United submitted a better offer than Barcelona, but even that wasn't enough as United's offer fell through. If anything, I think the United fanbase blew up the news and overstated it, making it seem like this was going to be a done deal.

He's showing way more confidence in the deal being completed regarding de Jong with the 95% claim. Romero, overall, has always been reliable. He's probably the most reliable Barcelona journalist around, even more so than the Mundo Deportivo ones.

Would be so, so pleased. £65m+ for him is a better deal than almost any other we could make in his position. A good DM, De Jong and Bruno from before this season is a title winning midfield.

He would also be perfect for Ten Hag. As for him preferring to stay at Barcelona, that’s just a minor inconvenience. Maybe he’ll enjoy life here as well. It’s like changing schools, you’re reluctant at first, but you eventually settle in and everything starts to go as swimmingly as usual.
yes much earlier in the thread I said couldnt see any truth in rumours then and the fee would hinder us for the number of signings we need to make.

Same time DeJOng and DeLigt were way above the other talents in that Ajax side, I know Barca have finanical problems and youngsters coming through, alsi I havent watched a huge amount of Barca the last year or so....but he has always looek dgood when I have seen him. I thought he was absoltuely made for Barcelona the way he plays and someone actually capable of flling Xavis shoes to a degree.

So still cant believe it, but in terms of a midfield deep lying playmaker, I cant think of any better at the moment.

I fully aggree with you though....we certainly need a defensive midfielder as DeJOng fills a gap where we already haev McFred, Hannibal, Garner and a couple of youngsters maybe a season or two away. Huge upgrade on what we have currently though and wodner if Hannibal is an option further forward as back up to Fernandes......but if we sign DeJOng at least one of those players simply has to go, we dont need 5 central midfielders for one position and NONE still for the defensive midfield role.

Thats the concern for me, we sign DeJOng and a DM even say Kamara on a free.....may be a title contending midfield (if Fernandes can find consistent form and the DM siging is good, so still ifs and buts).....but then we still need a CB, still need a Rb etc etc etc, doesnt leave a huge amount and personally, I dont care who we sign 3/4 doesnt progress us enough....even with the likes of DeJOng...but little doubt he is capable of being a monster of a plyaer for us..."cant play in the premiership"...nonsense, he is one of the best dutch players I have seen for a long time that had the nack of always lookign like the have time on the ball, he DeBoers were great at it too....he can play in any league for sure

He's a good source for Barca news, there's no doubt about that.

Let's hope Mike Verweij and the top English journos back Romero up.

Get rid of Busquets, Piqué, Alba if you need but I'm pretty sure that could have been able to keep him hadn't they spent money on Torres and wages on Aubam, Traore or Kessie.

Lack of people joining in on the news is a bit disappointing, but its still on and a done dealio, obviously.
It's been "on" for less than an hour and it's the middle of the night, so we're probably not going to get many journos phoning around to see what's what until tomorrow at the earliest.

Nice to have something to muppet about at least, usually we have to wait until mid August.

He did look a much better and more influential player under ETH in that deeper position, so who knows, maybe he just wants to get back to really enjoying his football again and being a bigger influence.
If so, could be a deal to make everyone happy.

Even if he was, De Ligt wasn’t a Barcelona player, and his best connections are with Barcelona.
Fair enough. Frenkie is on big wages at Barca. He's going to want similar here and having him on a similar contract to Sancho is not good business

Love how people are getting carried away. Title winning midfield with FDJ? He didn’t even win La Liga with Messi in the team.

He's definitely showing more confidence in this deal but he did report on RAC 1 that United were the front runners for de Ligt and Simon Mullock (Daily Mirror) fell for the story and wrote a exclusive that United were close to signing de Ligt.

Any concerns about him adapting to the pace and the physicality of the premier league? A very exciting signing if true.
Physicality maybe. Pace no. De Jong is quick and quick in technique and at thought. Pretty much unpressable. Thiago, Bernardo Silva and Kovacic level. And he could play his favourite position here without Busquets being in the way.

 spent 10 min time on their forum I couldn't find Barca fans said he's been spot on this season.

I probably read it from reddit or twitter. But the fact that all the Barcelona fans on that forum actually believe with the news means the guy is really indeed a good scource for Barca news. And also to call it 95% is bold statement. He could lose creditability if he gets it wrong after saying 95%.

He didn’t play in his best position. Obviously not looking at a title challenge but he is one of the most transformative players we could buy. Turning a weakness into a strength with one signing.

He's a good journalist for Barcelona, mate, there's no question about that.

I hope he's right.

I’d honestly much prefer this signing over Haaland. Just not sure I fully believe it!

I've spent the last few months adamant that I didn't want us signing big names summer and that I certainly didn't want us signing anyone on huge wages. This was the summer for a reset - get back to basics and build a squad of hungry, young players who want to sign for the right reasons.

On paper though, De Jong is just about the only player worth breaking that policy for. I didn't think for a second this was a feasible transfer this summer, and to be honest I still don't - but if we did get him, it's bloody hard not to get excited.
