Guillem Balague: How Arteta has led Arsenal to brink of Champions League after six-year absence - BBC Sport

started reading this, and couldnt stop reading it till the end and not because its particularly well written. I dont think ive ever read a more patheticly sycophantic hagiography.

a flavour:

He is a non-stop, perpetually driven ball of energy - but also fundamentally a man of compassion, a caring person with a natural sense of justice and someone whose main aim is to seek happiness and harmony in the dressing room.

Six year absence during which he was manager for three years.

How does he write as if he was literally sitting there beside him during all those meetings with the board, and the players?

"How Arteta has led Arsenal to brink of Champions League after six-year absence"

1) Be personally responsible for half of that absence
2) Spend more than any club in the world last summer (and have this literally never mentioned by any of your buddies in the media)
3) Have United and Spurs be total shite

I doubt they will make it to the Round of 16 this December.

Technically he was only responsible for us being out of the CL in 20/21 and this season.

Unless you think he should have somehow got us to qualify for the CL in 19/20 despite taking over in December 2019.

It's also funny that you mention him outspending everyone else last summer when the consensus pretty much everywhere was that we'd had a shit window and overspent on average players. I also definitely remember United being the summer transfer window "champions".

Feel like arsenal are about to have a false dawn like we did last season. Wouldn't be shocked if Arteta is gone by December.

Arsenal don't seem to be in the business of sacking their managers, at least not until they completely lose the dressing room and start getting mocked by the players like Emery.

He's alright Arteta. Its nice he's moved out half of the dross and big egos and replaced them with team players. No Europe has been a huge benefit too. I can honestly see a massive collapse in the league next year though when they have to start juggling all the competitions.

I don't really follow the logic.

Does the fact that some people thought you'd overspent on certain players mean you actually spent less than you did?

I thought the logic was pretty simple but I can simplify it further for you if you need.

The poster said one of the reasons we're in our current position is because Arteta outspent everyone last summer. But it was widely agreed our transfer window last summer was not good. So I just found it a bit odd that's something people are now using as a reason for our current position.

If Conte came to Spurs in the summer we're not even having this conversation.

I'm an Arteta supporter but that article was really just too much.

No quotations, not even a lot of specific examples. It was like somebody just made up the most sycophantic, positive spin story from scratch.

He would have been sacked here multiple times or at any other ambitious club. He is lucky to be managing a club like Arsenal where there is no pressure for him from the board.

But you did spend heavy. And combined that with no European football, definitely worked in his favor.

Ballbag is an absolutely terrible "journalist". He's agenda driven like no other journo out there.
Yep, ballbag's agendas are so obvious and shape absolutely everything he says or writes more clearly than anybody else who calls themselves a football journalist. Loves Barca and anybody associated with them. Loves Pep and anybody associated with him. Loves Liverpool and anyone associated with them. Doesn't have a single positive thing to say about basically anybody else in the world of football.

If (for example) Vieira had gone to Arsenal and done the exact same job, he wouldn't have a word to say on the matter, let alone fecking essay-length fluff pieces.

we could say that about Sir Alex as well, why he survived initial 7 years.

You’ve totally missed the point.
