As @Regulus Arcturus Black pointed out, Di Maria said it himself that he had issues with van Gaal. Of course Di Maria and his family struggled to settle in Manchester too but it would've helped if he had a manager that knew how to get the best out of him and didn't piss about playing him as a striker.

All the reports coming out today say de Jong is open to joining United and he's excited to reunite with his old manager.
He has his issues with LVG but that was one of many issues he had and the other issues meant his issues with the coach escalated. At Real or PSG, he would try to work it out.

Didn’t want to leave RM and United were not his first choice
My move to PSG could have happened before this summer but it didn’t for financial reasons and I ended up going to United

Wife was against it and money was only factor

An offer from Manchester United has come in. Maybe we’ll be a little more financially secure.’”

We were perfect, the weather was perfect, the food was perfect. And suddenly he said that there was a proposal to go to Manchester. I told him, ‘Not a chance. You are going alone. ‘No, come on. Let’s go’, he replied

It was horrible. Manchester is the worst. It is all horrible in Manchester. In fact, I fought a lot with Angel about it”

I think the above two, and arguments with his wife meant he was always looking for an out.

Very rarely do we have a summer window where we get the one player that I would want at the club at United the most. Think the last time was Pogba, and then arguably Sancho, if he were to be signed the summer before he actually did. For years everytime mention of Barca’s financial crisis arises my first comment is always ‘we should bully them for Frenkie’ - although never in a million years did I see it actually happening. Now, by all accounts, we are close. I couldn’t be happier. Having a team built around actual football is all I’ve wanted for us for years. Quality. Not all the other stuff, but first and foremost - I want us to be a better football team because we have better football handlers than you. This would be a huge step.

I must say that it is also tinged with some hesitation because to me, we need a midfield, not a midfielder - and I can’t see how we will get the best out of a player I think can be the world’s best midfielder in any combination of the existing unit. He’s the only player who looks to play football first and foremost of out senior mids, so him trying to lend and share the ball with teammates who possess no calmness or look to get shot of it anywhere within a second isn’t the most ideal. Still, it would be a huge step, and the right partner for De Jong plus at least 10 PL goals being brought in in any position would see me a very happy red this summer.

Raphinha too. I don't understand their strategy at all ... for a club in apparent financial disarray and in need of some serious rebuild (both on the pitch and financially), it's a weird approach.
knew I'd forgotten one

Good post mate. I share same point of view but you put it in the word better than I can.
There would be a fear that if we didn’t bring in another quality player or two for him to link up with and Ten Hag can’t get the required improvement from our current players then Frankie could suffer and his form go backwards as has happened with so many players over past few years.
Im hopeful this won’t happen though. In Ten Hag we trust!!( trust that is already building with him getting this signing done)

At this rate I hope we scrap the deal and re-sign Di Maria just so the moaners can shut the feck up.
Then we’d never hear the end of it.

If you think he’s lot like Pogba then let me show you something. Schone was his midfield partner in 18/19 under ten Hag and look at who made more defensive contributions out of the two? Pogba wouldn’t be able to do that for sure because the guy can’t defend.

I guess what the stats point to is what Ajax folk have said, that De Jong / Schöne acted as more or less a double pivot, changing who were more DM/behind.

Andrei Kanchelskis made me fall in love with Unite
Goldbridge goes live two or three times a day, so even when there isn't anything to say, he finds something to talk about. And sometimes it's okay not to have an opinion. But that's not practical when your job involves... being opinionated. So he just has to come up with something. This often involves spurious, cynical takes that are to the benefit of no-one other than himself. He assimilates himself to his audience to keep the super-chats rolling.

He is a persona, he's admitted as much - I actually think he comes across well when he's not 'in character'. But his voice travels amongst section of the online fanbase - so his opinions get parroted online. The incessant negativity is just tedious.

But this isn't a Goldbridge thread... De Jong is a real coup. :)
Fair enough, mate - I do disagree. Maybe in his early days he was more negative but i find him fairly balanced these days. And you're right - who cares - bring on Frenkie!

Goldbridge was only unbearable for me during the Cavani shit. It was almost petulance.

Frenkie can play. He is young and United has to trust Erik, who is a solid coach - let him do his thing.

And who is to say the other bozos won’t improve under Erik, a good coach can make or break you

Fred is a starter for fecking Brazil - on paper the strongest national team in the world along France - so maybe Erik will get more usage out of him.

He’ll likely play as one of two central midfielders.
Thanks. Didn’t know ETH was going to use a 4231. Learn something new every day.
ETH can still play lone no 6 for de jong’s role if he plays inverted full backs or playing 3 at the back. In 18/19, he didn’t play inverted full back but his full backs stay wider, which is why ETH played that 2 off no 6. De jong won’t play no 8 for sure.

I dunno, you have to be careful what you joke about. There was a lad thinking Origi would be a good alternative to FDJ if the move didn’t happen. He wasn’t joking :nervous::houllier:
These last few years; I have come to the realisation that a lot of United fans here are really into United or football .... just to catch the stardust of winning silverware, which we did a lot in the past.

Now that United isn't winning much, they are constantly slagging off our own players, management etc and really don't know shite about how the game is played.

One key ingredient of being a supporter of a club is loyalty -- and you give the RAWKs a lot of credit. Here, it's either ignorance or United as some pinata to beat up.

FdJ would be great, but not for 100mil€. Barcelona is delusional. I’d walk and move to next target if Barcelona say no to 80mil. To negotiate you have to be willing to walk away.

For players like him where the club doesnt want them anymore, staying would be much much worse than leaving. I think that is sometimes overlooked.

Funny that word/phrase press resistant wasn't used on Scholes. Nor common then.
Scholes is not press resistant to the extend of someone like FdJ. Yes in the right set up Scholes is untouchable, but standalone he's prone go direct with passing (good passing, not percentage ball though) to get away from pressing.

FdJ is like Redondo that that he invites opposition pressing, then works his way through without the need to go long.

The last thing you should do if you have a divided down the middle dressing room is sign players associated with your former club because both factions will think the ex-Ajax lot are being favoured.

Also, think he is more a tika-taka City player than a hard-running Man Utd player. Can't be worse than Pogba, that's for sure.
