Bairstow has had chance after fecking chance. 10 years of test cricket and aside from one 18 month period he's never been good enough

He shouldn't be in the Test side. Fails so often.

He scored two tons in the Windies didn't he? Deserved a place this summer.

Yeah. Flat pitches but he was England's best batsman.

EDIT - Hang on, we only played 3 tests. I've got one day matches in this somehow...

Think it's only 1 century. Average of 45. Bit behind Joe Root's 48 and Saqib Mahmood's 52.

Fair enough , it just feels real feast or famine with him.

His record in England must be pretty bad too
It's the moving ball. If there's any swing or seam movement, he can't adapt.

I would rather have Malan there. Brooks is also tempting.

Scored 1 100 vs the Windies, his other ton was in Australia. It’s now 8 innings without scoring above 30, with Brook averaging over 100 in CC this season can’t be much longer before he gets a chance.

England could actually win this. Bat for the next day and three quarters, get past their score then bowl them out cheaply, Adelaide-style.

Not saying we will, but it's possible!
Not looking so fanciful now is it...

Stokes certainly thinks the result's on!

Yep, it was a good shout. Didn't look on at stumps day two to me but Lees, Pope and Root set a very solid platform for an assault on that total in the first two sessions.

Still a lot of work to do obviously, but England hold the aces here, especially with having a spinner in their line up.

This is outrageous batting.

I thought we'd get to 400 by the close... we've got there just after 5pm!

Bit dumb that from Stokes. He'd got eight from the over already... could have just milked the spinner. There's loads of time left in the match!

Now we've got Foakes and the tail. Hopefully we can get up to 500.

Guess the feeling is that even if we concede a first-innings lead, we can win the test by bowling them out cheaply.

It felt about 70 runs too early to be trying to score so quickly. A collapse now makes New Zealand huge favourites.

Nice innings for Stokes, but it’s a bit silly at 200 runs down. Maybe once there’s 100 runs to tick off.

The daft thing is you wouldn’t even bat like that in a T20, take the six, milk the single.

Stokes is better than that.

He doesn't need to just come in and try and smash every ball for 6, he can construct an innings.

It was great to watch but it's left England in trouble.

Fascinated by Stokes’ approach vs spinners this season. There was a lad at Worcestershire he nearly took for six 6’s in an over, he got right after Patel at Lords and now he tried to smash everything Bracewell bowled.

I don't think him trying to change his batting is necessarily wrong. He does have a poor record for someone with his talent. He's gone too extreme with it so far though.

It is a problem with him, once he goes into that mode he can’t get himself out of it.

I do think he’d become too defensive in recent years but there’s a nice balance to be struck.

Foakes and Root need to just be steady now.

We need another 100 runs at least I'd say
Yep, I'd agree.

We're actually ahead of the game now. We've scored so quickly that there's plenty of time left for a result. Just need to try and get up to their score and ideally past it.

Reckon they'll send Broad in next?

Depends on the timing. In the last 30 mins I reckon Leach would be the smart move to just play it out to the close.

I feel like TV directing is getting progressively worse, few times where they’ve been nowhere near the ball in the air.
