We don't need a direct replacement for Pogba, rather we need a tactically astute midfielder who can control possession. We don't have one and haven't had one since Carrick and Scholes. It would be similar to saying we needed a direct replacement for Lukaku, a flat-track bully who can't trap a ball. Silly.
Spot on.

Happens a lot on here, a lazy regurgitation.

Some examples;

A Mata replacement - we need a nice bloke who doesn’t play.

A Pogba replacement - we need a talented footballer who’s never showed consistency in the PL and doesn’t play too often.

A JLingus replacement - We need someone with a questionable mental age who runs around a lot. Who barely plays

In summary, using the replacement ‘logic’we’re looking for 3 players to not play very often.

These hypothetical midfields don’t include Bruno, who is almost certain to be a fixture in our midfield, and has not demonstrated any ability to be part of a ‘possession team’. So when constructing a 3 which includes him, you absolutely need some positional and defensive discipline, especially if FDJ is to be one of the other two. I don’t think we could play Vitinha, Nunes and Bruno and play possession football, because it doesn’t work to Bruno’s strengths. And then if Bruno plays and you want a defensive player with him and De Jong, I think you would ideally want one more capable than Fred.
It's all hypothetical, but we might not be getting a striker, so Bruno in a false #9 role would still be a fixture in the team or utilised as a wide play-maker. But it's extremely detrimental to the cause if the central attacking midfielder is as wasteful as Bruno Fernandes has been.

So these hypothetical scenarios will be discussed and should be discussed imo.

We might not get a striker, but we do already have one. Bruno wasn’t playing as a false 9 this season, and he likely won’t play as one next season. We won’t play with a false 9 because we have a real 9 that scores goals.

I share your concerns about Bruno’s ability to keep the ball, it’s why I’d rather he wasn’t in the team.

we need more than one striker and the one we do have is 37.

And Tadic had never played as a false #9, Schone had never played as a deep lying playmaker, and Schweinsteiger had never played as a...Alaba had never played as a... The common denominator here is the approach of 3 coaches who implemented positional play. Doesn't mean it'll happen with Bruno but it shouldn't be discounted and looked at with a very narrow lens. Because the head coach in question, adheres to a school of thought, which has historically demonstrated that a player can play more than one position on the pitch.

Bruno may well be able to play at false 9. The reason I am saying he will not is not because he has never played there. It is because we already have a key player there. Tadic would not have played as a false 9 with any regularity if Ajax had Lewandowski, and Schone would not have played alongside De Jong if they had Patrick Vieira.

Whether or not Bruno can fill in as a 9 on the few occasions Ronaldo won’t start is one thing, but signing alternative midfielders on the basis that Bruno will now be a false 9 is another. Ronaldo will play up front in the main. So a midfield of Nunes, Fred and Vitinha because Bruno can play false 9 basically means Bruno will just be a sub. Which I am personally not against, but I think is highly unlikely.

Lewandowski is a better player than Ronaldo in the game today. And we shouldn't be relying on a 37 year old player who is clearly past his best. So in a season where we could potentially play 60 games, there will be plenty of game time for players in a approach put forth by the current head coach which requires a high level of physical intensity from the players.

I also wouldn't be putting forth hypothetical scenarios if we had Lewandowki or Erling Haaland. But that's sadly not the case, and we either sign a striker or get creative and think outside of the box. And it's widely reported the club want a striker.

Wolves fan here. Vitinha only had played 500 minutes during the whole season and didn't really get going, but the talent was clearly there. He put in a MOTM performance against West Brom but that was the only highlight of a underwhelming campaign for him. Nuno didn't give him enough of a chance really, though he didn't set the world alight when he started or came on as a sub.

We had the option to buy him for £20 million last summer but passed on it. Fosun (Wolves owners) are increasingly tight these days so it would have represented a bit of a punt at that price.

Looks like he came on leaps and bounds last season at Porto though.

i would think he’s another box to box with some craft and grit. Maybe we just aren’t going to play with a specialist DM until Rice becomes available or something
Ye it seems like rice is our obvious DM target but his price tag is ridiculous. There must be better and cheaper players out there who play in the same position? Can see rice going to Chelsea eventually, we can’t afford to wait for him, we need a DM right now.

Moutinho and Deco (because he played in Porto) get comped with him regularly. Vitinha is a tidy player with quick feet and good on the dribble, good passer of the ball as well and has fantastic work rate.

He made fantastic strides this season ar Porto and if it’s worth anything both Vitinha and Fabio Vieira are two players from Porto I really enjoy watching. Very talented youngster who were key players in Porto’s title run.

I do think it’s premature for him to go to the EPL and he should stay in Porto a little longer to develop.

He is not worth 40M atm that’s an absurd price. 25M or even 20M could get him now especially because Porto are piss broke, they have no money.

Vitinha and Fabio Vieira are two players scouts should be monitoring at Porto.
Any further thoughts on Fabio Vieira by any chance? Arsenal have been linked to him today.

You need to be able to dribble and carry the ball well in order to function as a false 9. I don't think it is a viable option for Bruno. If a player struggles to get into the XI or doesn't fit in it, the solution isn't to shoehorn in a bunch of positions that he wouldn't excel at; the solution is to just bench him.

I don’t disagree and would sell Bruno tomorrow if it were my choice.

I mean, I don’t think Tadic would have played regularly as a false 9 if Ajax had Ronaldo either. And it is reported that we want a ‘forward’, with reports specifically stating ‘not necessarily a central striker’.

I’m nit against Bruno being an option as a central player, I’d prefer him out of the midfield 3 than in it, but he won’t be the first choice there. 60 games or not, Ronaldo will start most games if he is fit, so if Bruno is happy to start the games in Hungary in the Europa League, then fine, but if not - he’d need a primary position in the team in which he would expect to start the same games that Ronaldo would expect to start. And that position would likely be in the middle 3, at the expense of either Nunes, Fred or Vitinha - which would immediately weaken any possession game we are trying to play as our default approach.

In summary, I can’t see us buying two starting midfielders of the profile of Vitinha, Nunes or De Jong in order to pursue a possession based approach, as any pairing from the two would require a third midfielder with a different profile to Bruno both with and without the ball. And given that I don’t expect such a point to be made redundant due to the fact that Bruno will instead play most of his games at centre forward - I think we will/should only buy one of these types of players rather than two. I am not in disagreement with your vision, I just don’t see it as very likely. And even if it were, I’d like to see us start to integrate Hannibal rather than buy two of these kind.

I suppose I can get on board with what you're saying. Let's see how the season pans out because I for one am really looking forward to the season.

Exactly one of the best forum have ever come across. Every topic I am interested in either football, movies, current events etcetera, you'd always get some well reasoned debates about them from different posters. Course there are often hyperboles but generally have learnt quite a lot on here.

I hear you, but it wasn’t exactly a vintage season was it?!
Yeah, true. I'm hoping a number of the players can show their true level. Some of them for sure can do more. Bruno, Rashford come time mind.

Some will call it bias but I rate nunes higher then Vitinha. However he won’t leave for less then 45M I reckon
I would love both at United. But I think United will go the Hollywood route as usual and sign FDJ for 80 million and Jude for 100 million next year.

Deepthroating information to Howard Nurse.
Does anyone who has seen him think he could player with De Jong in a double pivot? Considering I’m assuming the idea is to control possession and then space high up sustaining attacks City style is it a possibility?

I think Guardiola with City's other players might try that. And another coach when you are a goal behind and need to throw everything in attack might try that after 60-70 mins.

But I dont think Ten Haag would do that with our players unless we replaced the majority of the team this summer. Their positions are similar enough that most likely 1 would play if we signed both, unless Vitinha was played in the Bruno role as a means to have more of the ball.

They essentially do the same thing as well. Dribble and pass with technique
