BILD are linking us to the signing of David Raum. Apparently they mention Newcastle and West Ham as well. I can't post the link to the BILD article because it's behind a paywall so this will have to do:

He plays as a left fullback or wingback for Hoffenheim.

I have kept an eye on him since last summer when i noticed his crazy stats in the 2. BuLi. 15 assists in 34 league games as Greuther Fürth were promoted to the Bundesliga. This was his first season in the BuLi and he finished with 3 goals and 13 assists in 32 matches (Transfermarkt, other sources says 11 assists). His impressive performances earned him his debut for the german national team and it seems he hasn't looked back, establishing himself as a contender for the starting spot at the World Cup.

He has mainly been linked with Dortmund in recent weeks but also as an alternative signing to Cucurella for City in recent days. Juventus have been mentioned. I know us and Newcastle etc could very well just be used to put pressure on Dortmund but i wanted to make the thread regardless. Just like with Vitinha, this potential signing excites me so lets dream.

This guy can cross. I just want us to have attacking threats from fullback and this guy fits the bill. He has adapted to every level he's played at so far and i think he's ready for a step up. It would be a shame if we miss out on him but i also understand our priorities might be on other positions this summer.

We aren't going to spend that much on a left back in this window, no chance. The price would have to be about half that amount.

Ndicka and Raum are both on this list. They are both really promising signings.

A left-back isn't a priority at the moment but it's good we're looking at a potentially very good player.

Yes it's good that we are looking at a player that another club will sign, it will help us a great deal in the coming season.

We could invest in this lad and tie down the LB spot for the next 6 years.

Or we could spend nothing and give Luke Shaw another chance to prove he's not a fraud.

Which do you think wil happen?

A left back is totally feasible this summer IF we can manage to offload Telles and Williams. Transfer fee and wages saved on them should go some way to facilitate a new LB.

Really looked great in the Nations League. Says Robertson is his hero and you can see the similarities in terms of his motor.

If we've got 120M to spend and 70M is on De Jong, that only leaves 50M plus I assume whatever we make in sales, so it's tight, but 30M on Raum and then selling Telles for 10M I could see being just about worth it. Then 30M for either a RW or a LCB. I think we probably need the LCB more as I prefer Maguire and Varane playing on the right in a possession heavy system, and also the 23 games in 14 weeks to start the season would likely lead to a Varane injury unless he's rotated with Maguire.

So yeah, De Jong, Raum, Pau Torres and Antony in for say 190M and then gin up 70M by selling Henderson (20M), Wan-Bissaka (15M) Telles (8M), Brandon Williams (6M), Bailly (6M), Phil Jones (5M) leaves us about 10M short, which you'd figure could be managed. Though that leaves literally only Dalot at RB unless Laird can step up or there's someone that can be switched to that role who's more of a midfielder/RCB like the role Mazraoui played with Antony wide right and Raum high up the pitch on the left, though god help me I only see McTominay really suited for that role. If we sign a 30M LCB instead of Pau Torres, we can afford another RB.

It's also possible Ten Hag sees Shaw as an LCB in a 3 man defence and we won't buy one, but I'd be worried if we did that, despite how good Shaw has looked in that role at times. Makes more sense if we buy Timber and play Shaw between one of Varane or Maguire and Timber on the right and just accept that we'll have trouble in the air at times, but can actually build up with their composure on the ball.

No chance we would sell Brandon Williams for 6m. That said, we also would probably only sell Brandon Williams if he was worth 6m, so that is our real problem.

He might have some extra value because he can backup both fullback spots, so if a team has no cover on either side he can be the 3rd fullback and shore up the position, but I don't see a double-digit player in there, even at 21. Not sure you're getting 10M for a backup fullback who did okay for the worst defence in the entire league and isn't special going forward.

He’s a back up full back for Manchester United. He wasn’t a back up full back for Norwich. So basically, he is a regular full back at Premier League level - then the added fact that he can play both sides and is 21 as you have said should make him comfortably worth more than 6m.

Whoever buys him won’t be buying him to be a back up, because he’s not about to sign for Chelsea or City. He’ll go to the bottom half of the league where he will expect to play.

A regular defender of any kind for Norwich is not a Premier League level player. Maybe Hanley. They were comfortably the worst team defensively in the league. Watching them, only Puuki and Normann really stood out to me as good enough to be regular starting players in the Prem anytime soon.

That isn’t how defending works sir.

I mean sure the midfielders and forwards and tactics matter. But if you're Palace in 12th or Villa in 14th who would you have play actual minutes from the Norwich defenders? Probably Hanley as a useful backup who's good in the air, though you wouldn't want him starting. Then Aarons' career has been a bit Rashford-y lately and his value seems to have dropped at least in half, but I think some teams would want him as a backup RB. And that's probably it, really. Someone will want Williams. But for closer to 5M than 15.

Norwich had a terrible season, conceded the most goals, and Godfrey was sold for big money. Aarons was chased by Barcelona and Bayern that same summer.

Teams get relegated because they are not good enough for a particular level, and their players who ARE good enough get bought by teams of that level - every year. Leeds concede a shit load of goals and looked like they were going down for a while, and their defensive midfielder would have been one of the immediate targets for better teams.

Williams, by all accounts, didn’t suffer reputational damage this season. He seemed to be regular considered one of Norwich’s better players.

Great LWB, don't think he's a great LB though and a risk at 30 mil if we are playing 4 at the back.

We do have need for him, Luke Shaw isn't the one, but its just not a signing I could see us making with all the other issues we have currently.
Shaw is literally one of about 3/4 players that is anyway adequate from the current team. Would be crazy to spend so much on a back up to him when we have gaping holes in other areas of the first team.

Can't compare Leeds to Norwich. 24 goal difference is pretty massive, and also just watching them, I'm not sure there's a 10M player in the Norwich squad outside of Aarons and Normann, though Omibadele seems to be highly rated. Puuki would be if he was 30 instead of 32 obviously.

Transfmarket agrees with you, has him at 12M. But at 65K a week, that seems like money for a starting fullback for Prem teams in the 12-15 range, and I just don't think he's shown enough to be purchased as a starting player for one of those teams. He didn't get much England time unlike someone like Walker-Peters, and fullbacks who've moved to the teams Williams would make sense for like Nathan Patterson and Perraud moved for about 10-12M and I think they've shown more and have more upside.

Telles should be one of the first players out of the door but it won't happen this window to buy a new left back.

In all fairness Leftback, you have no idea whether we will sell a leftback and buy a new leftback or not.
