It says basically nothing about his character. We aren't challenging for the title for years even if things go well so that part is completely irrelevant. It's a reasonable concern that if he struggles to settle even for a couple of months (as some of the best players in Premier League history have, never mind a young defender joining a dysfunctional team trying to put things back together) then that puts his place in the national team at risk, especially now his own national team manager has highlighted that as a potential issue. If we're good next season then he can come then, he's just turned 21, and if we're a Europa/Conference League team again then he can join a better side.

May be city don’t want FdJ? They look to be after a different profile in Kalvin Philipps. So this could be a big switcheroo with de Jong to United, Silva to Barcelona and Philipps to City.

A bit harsh that, taking things at a slower pace and being patient instead of jumping at the first opportunity presented makes him look mature and might just prove to be a wise decision. Makes sense for City to let Gundogan go and get FDJ, thus preventing us getting our catalyst while slightly strengthening their team.
The structure of their midfield his different. They olay with two AMs and a oure DM. They would have to change the structure to accommodate FDJ.

A new manager rarely signs a player to put him on the bench. Esp when the manager was the guy who gave him his chance in football. There is no way Ten Hag would sign Timber for £30-40 mil to put him on the bench - and I am sure Ten Hag communicated that to Timber.
