what happened? Did something change?
Some people see the storm before it comes, some people see it when they're in it.

Things changed a long time ago. We're not a high performing team or club. If we repeat the same things we have to expect the same results.

Fair enough mate, you've got us there. Let's just give them £100m tonight, empty the warchest and close the transfer window now eh?
You believe the club can empty all the funds in one transfer window? What do the Glazers feed you?

Funny how every other top PL club that is also in a better position than us manages to do the bolded but for this supposed biggest club in the world it's a struggle to do it with one single player over the course of multiple weeks.

Yet, the ownership do not struggle to take out their bit in dividends promptly each time and are happy to justify the outlay. I've said it plenty of times but the way some of you go on about patience, you'd think we've won the league at least twice in the last five. Mind-boggling delusion and complacency.
The sides in a better position than us have champions league football, established managers and stability. You're absolutely deluded if you think we're an attractive option right now.

Add to that the fact that we're always overcharged for players because everyone knows we have plenty of money. Every club outside of the PL bar PSG try to bleed English clubs dry because they're all struggling financially to compete. Newcastle have faced the same problem, and city have only done a deal with a fixed transfer fee.

This club was rebuilt with patience and strategic investment in our darkest hour. We need to realise that we need a long term plan, not short term fixes. We're stuck with a lot of average players that we've overplayed for and can't now get rid of without facing massive losses on. Short term risks often aren't worth it.

Some of you lot will be saying the same thing in end of July. The so called fans are so happy to get desperate last min signings at end of window. They don't want planning and proactivity in the market.
Smaller clubs plan stuff in much better way. Yet, we struggle on every deal. There are so many rich clubs out there, yet almost none of them need weeks and weeks of negotiations on every deal. It is naive to assume that all selling clubs just rollover for them, but only have drawn out negotiations with us.
I've literally said the players aren't even back in training yet. If we don't have bodies in within the next few weeks, I'd consider that a failure.

As far as planning goes, I think it's difficult when the club doesn't qualify for the champions league. We're just not the attractive proposition that those above us are. Add to that the fact that our manager has just walked through the door, and it was always going to be a game of catch up. It's completely irrational to think that Ten Hag has had the time to assess our squad fully when he's not even met the players or seem them train ffs. Why do you think we're chasing players he's already worked with?

Do you really want a brand new DOF and his team to go and buy players without the manager's input?

Uh ohhh... better just give in to Barca's demands and blow our entire transfer budget because we all want this done now now now!!
I think you should do some critical thinking towards realising our club isn't broke financially. They'd just rather change the manager every couple of years, when their lack of ambition and knowledge of running a top football club is exposed.

Fans gta wisen up man.

Yeah that’s fair enough. If it’s true that Ten Hag can’t function without De Jong it reflects quite poorly on him.
That’s all very well, but if I were ETH I’m not sure I’d trust United to be able to come up with a suitable alternative, given the hopelessness of our scouting.

Sancho 2020 at 1342 followed by Pogba at 1091.

This one ranks 6th behind those two, Vidal, Sanchez and Berbatov.
Thanks mate. A fair bit to go but at this rate I wouldn’t be surprised if this thread is there or there abouts amongst the Pogba’s and Sancho’s.

Before we can even start thinking about a title winning team we first have to build a team that can compete with Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs. Only then we can even start to think about the next step to challenge Liverpool and City. Would love to get De Jong but even a midfield of say Bissouma and Tielemans would have been a massive upgrade on McFred.
Just like how Schmidfield was supposed to be our best Midfield since Carrick/Scholes because they weren't expensive? Cheap doesn't always mean good just as likely to flop as past big money signings. I'd rather get one quality player than two slightly above average ones.

Was never happening due to not knowing how much we had to outlay for De Jong
Ajax is used to being preyed on by the bigger clubs. In the past all were bought away. Nowadays ajax wants to keep the core intact because ajax doean’t want to start over each year. But for 70 mil anthony can continue and ajax already has another jewel in its sight

It’s pretty comical they still haven’t got this or any other transfer done. Can only assume we are really short of funds as no other sensible excuse, unless it’s just incompetence.

He isn't worth the price Barca wants along with his huge salary he'll demand anyway. The sooner the club moves on from this deal the better.
You didn't answer my question. WHy do clubs not announce 2/3 signings when the window opens to register players? Why do 90% of clubs wait till the window to negotiate?

He is the best striker, but you can't go past the fact that he's 33 and only has a few years left. He could have another 2/3 great season, but he could decline rapidly as well. With 30+ players you just never know and especially not when they're closer to 35 than to 30. It could be over any minute. Moreover, he is worth 0 next year because his contract runs out. 30-35m is not cheap at all in this situation. If he had a 2/3 year deal, then a fee in the range of 50m would be more appropriate, but for a 1 year contract it's a ridiculous asking price.

Besides that you're completely going past the fact that Bayern should show some class and respect to a player that's meant a lot to them. It's not like he's 25 and just played for the club for 3 years. He's been there for ages, broke all the records, won the biggest prices and now has a wish to spend the last seasons of his carreer in another country. Instead of respecting a club legend's wishes, Bayern launches a media campaign to make Lewandowski look like a villain. Only because Bayern is butthurt that someone doesn't want to finish the carreer with them. Like that's the end of the world. It's ridiculous and totally classless. Not a way to treat your stars.
At the end Lewandowski got a contract with Bayern and that's how the club valuates him. Lewandowski isn't only the best striker over the last years but also extremely reliable and almost never injured. There are very few who live as professional and probably have as good genes. Ronaldo maybe and he still plays for you guys at the age of 37.

Regarding to your comment Bayern isn't showing any class in this transfer drama and I have a different view point.

I think we can all agree that the Mané deal was handled quietly, swiftly and with class.
However, this wasn't possible with the Lewandowski side.

First his team was complaining on a weekly base that Bayern doesn't seek talks for a contract extension. Bayern's answer was there will be enough time after the CL as they didn't want to derail their season with contract talks, especially when the player still got a contract until 2023. The club always stated they wanted to extend with Lewandowski and won't hire Haaland. This strategy went perfectly well with the extensions of Neuer and Müller. Still the Lewandowski side didn't start quiet, on the contrary they intensified their public campaign against the club launching the story Lewandowski doesn't feel respected and Bayern are negotiating with Haaland behind their back. Funnily there was never a talk of Lewandowski leaving until it was clear Haaland will join Man City but the complains were always about the duration of the extension and timeline.
Now Zahavi changed the communication completely and suddenly Lewandowski wanted to leave immediately and sign a the ready to sign 3 years contract with Barcelona. That's when things totally escalated and the Bayern board had enough telling publicly Lewandowski will have to honor his contract and stay until 2023. Instead of calming things down, Zahavi, Barcelona and Lewandowski further escalated during the nations league.

I don't say Bayern is faultless in this drama but the main share is with Barcelona and Lewandowski's team.
Barcelona not even being able to close the deal, because until today they can't register any new players with la Liga doesn't help either.

@mods feel free to move this answer to the Lewandowski threat.

This will drag on a while longer yet. Neither club can really afford that though. We need to bring him in and get moving, but Barca need to money to reinvest. Barca are going to keep changes the terms as they need to maximise the money received upfront. We're probably saying we can't stretch the budget. By the looks of it, it is close to the final stages of a transfer being agreed, it is simply a matter of details and instalment payments yet to be agreed. We should be focusing on other targets in the meantime, of course.

I suspect it may be quicker than I first expected. News of Barca trying to buy Lewa now. It's a PR leak to enable them to soften their stance publically on Frenkie. Prepping the ground so to speak -- feel good factor.
Otherwise why talk about buying another player when you are trying to flog another -- tactically makes no sense. Tells Bayern how much they are getting from United.
