Played a blinder if this is true.

Second summer in a row we have raided la liga for one of their top players.

10 years ago if you would have told me would we have been able to sign Real Madrid's best defender and one of Barcelona's (and Europes) best midfielders I'd have laughed in your face.

Those two combined will cost less than fecking romelu lukaku or grealish ffs.

Let THAT sink in.

Yes, but I also consider that the Telegraph and multiple other reputable source reported the same, plus his agent meeting with Chelsea and Ronaldo being discussed (not the first club too)
Sure, they all know that stories about United mean more clicks, more comments, etc. From my perspective the Ten Hag story is absolutely made up horseshit designed to send United fans into a frenzy. The guy is away on holiday, did all the papers have reporters hiding outside of his suite or lounging by the pool listening in on all of his conversations? I doubt it. They were absolutely trying to foster panic and rage among the fan base because of what that does for their revenue and profile.

The Ronaldo story is also speculative due to his agent meeting up with various clubs. I'm pretty sure Mendes represents more players than Ronaldo. Of course this one is more believable but I don;t think either story has much in the way of legs.

Hopefully this will be confirmed by the end of the week. This one will get the ball rolling I’d say

We have been overpaying so much, for so many years that people here thinks that 69mln is a steal, well actually it is not, it is normal price or even slightly higher for player Barcelona is desperate to sell. Not every deal have to be compared to Maguire's stupid money.

Random but how far into the saga did we get with Griezmann?

I feel like that was at the “deal getting close” stage where De Jong is before he rejected us.

I think it was happening but didn't we lose the CL so he decided to stay?

Great negotiations from the team, fair play. The next step is 4 more signings, at least, and to make sure we don't turn into Ajax/Eredivisie 2.0 by only signing ex Ajax players.

£54m fixed with £15m in add ons looks a very good deal if Mitten is correct.
If we paid that to Ajax back then it would have been a good deal too. I’m really happy with this. An actual press resistant playmaker! I think if we are going with two box to box players Fred and FDJ will be a good enough partnership with us hopefully stepping up our interest in Bellingham and/or Rice for next summer. Hopefully the end of McT as a regular starter.

Honestly hope we start phasing out Fred and the existing lads (at least from the first eleven) and bring in better players like Bellingham and a defensive mid to compliment our new signings.

I love Fred and statistically he’s become one of the best pressing midfielders in the country. If we do plan on playing a more pressing game then I think we have more pressing matters at hand, excuse the pun. We can and will upgrade on Fred for sure but we still need a striker, RW, RB and DM more. I also honestly think Fred would be hailed as a diamond in a better harder working team. The amount of dirty work he gets through and he’s really fast to release the ball to the better players. His numbers of goals and assists have really picked up. If he can stay fit I bet he’ll be in the running for our POTS next summer.

Fred as a squad player is fine by me.

But I think the bare minimum for any midfielder that plays for us (or ETH) is to be able to pass the ball. Something we have been woeful at doing with Fred, McT and Matic.

So it's looking like we're going to get a player entering his probable peak years who vastly improves a key weak point in the side for a fee considerably lower than what was originally asked for, all whilst missing out on just one player we were rumoured to be interested in because they went to a better-placed team for a fee well in excess of what would've been sensible for us to pay.

I understand that people get impatient but might I suggest that people are slightly less hyperbolic about the state of affairs when there's still so much of the transfer window left to go.

I take your point on those 3 but when looked at in isolation Fred's passing stats are surprisingly good as was discussed quite a bit in his performance thread. McT is beyond redemption as a passer but Fred partnered with FDJ in a proper system could be very effective and certainly for the next season will have a role to play even if we do upgrade eventually.

It’s a bid. Where does it say this is the one that will be accepted? We haven’t got him yet, and if we do, it will presumably be for a higher offer.
They have till Thursday to bring in extra cash to balance their books, or the La Liga FFP won't allow them to sign new players. If you think they are in a position to jeopardize their entire season over 10 mil then fair play to you.

If what’s being said is true about the price then it was worth waiting while the team brought the negotiations down. That would be a steal! Reckon once de Jong is through the door then we’ll start seeing a lot more movement in signings.

Freds passing is in the early 80% most games which is standard for a player who will hit a risky pass or two. McT was hitting as low as 60% in some games. That’s really really bad. For a lad who also can’t tackle and doesn’t have a creative passing game, it’s hard to see what he brings to the table apart from positional aggression and I think that’s overstated. Matic was quality on the ball but played a really slow probing game. Matic and McT needed upgrading before Fred really.

We've turned a corner ever since we've signed Bruno. I don't remember overpaying for a single player since then.

£54m as an initial cost means there’s plenty left in the £120m kitty (and not including any sales we make). We should really go hard after Antony and Martinez/Timber now. Also hopefully we can seal the deal on Eriksen.

Don't be such a downer mate, it's a perfectly fine price just look at what Madrid paid for a much more unproven player or some of the other prices flying about for other players.

As it stands we just got a player who if utilized properly and if fulfilling his potential is the very best operator at his position there is.

Compared to Rice at 100m+, or Phillips at £45m yes it is

Barca may have to sell but they weren't ever going to give him away
