This. Sensible -- rather than the hysterics or the usual whingers predictably going on about lack of activities etc and the useless club management, Glazers etc.
Yeah everything is hunky dory isn’t it?

You think the Liverpool players have any loyality to Liverpool? If Klopp leaves and Liverpool turns to shit (hopefully) than i dont think Virgil van Dijk, Allison, Thiago and Salah to name a few want to stay there. What connection do they have to Liverpool outside being part of a successperiod for Liverpool? Players stay for success, money or the chance to work with a special manager (City have all three of these for example) and very rarely stay out of loyalty. Playing for a club is just work for professional football players and the very best players in the world have their pick of clubs to play for.

It sounds nice and romantic and all the loyal to a club players but that just isnt a thing in modern football anymore. Money and succes are the main reasons players join and stay at a club. Pogba didnt have much success and the money he was offered to compensate that lack of success wasnt good enough for him so he left. Also no, i didnt watch the Pogmentary. I have no interest in football players outside the footballpitch. They are all overgrown kids with too much money, why would i be interested in that? I do like to watch good players play good football though.

Ronaldo same story, he wants succes (well, he wants to score goals in the CL to keep his record since he doesnt want Messi/Haaland/Mbappe to take it from him in the future).

Long story short, there is no loyality in modern day football. If you want the best players to stay or join your club you either offer them money or success and since professional football players are very selfish they likely even want both. If a club cant offer that to them they will find another club where they can have those things. If you want to only attract players with loyality to Manchester United you are going to have a full team of Jesse Lingards and Scott Mctominays.

SAF didnt just make stars either. He bought stars too or atleast tried to buy them.
We should sign players who we can build with not the Ronaldo type, we should look for the new Ronaldo one who isn't entitled and would be glad to be here, play for the manager and follow his instructions to the fullest. The likes of Antony, Martinez and Malacia fit that description, hopefully we stop going after this galactico signings who think they're bigger than they are.

My hope is that bringing in Ronaldo was symptomatic of the last regime's failures of poor planning, lack of general strategy around signings, and prioritising the marketability over the football.

Further to that I hope that it's the kind of signing the club will avoid in the future.

It’s all over BBC, Sky Sports etc. In a way this coverage could be the best thing that happens to us this summer. It makes the Glazers and everyone associated at senior level look completely incompetent.
If this doesn’t stir the club into major recruitment action then nothing will.

Sometimes the best clubs, including us over the years, end up with players that are just nowhere near good enough. Just playing for Manchester United doesn't mean you have what it takes to be good enough, as we make mistakes (lots over the last 10 years).

Apart from Sancho, that's how I see those attacking options you have listed. And we have plenty of proof that it is the case. That's 4 players who, in my and many people's opinions, operate best from LW anyway. So how we make a front 3 or 4 out of them is anybody's guess.

How you can say having those options I'd "heading in the right direction" is just absolutely blind faith and sheer hope. There is no logic to it at all. To lose our top scorer and just bump up the players that have been piss poor, is not heading in the right direction.
Logic?
do you even ask yourself why all other players stopped scoring goals? Why was the team unable to perform well last season and was so disjointed? You probably will say ole is elementary school teacher, all of our players are lazy and low level players. If that’s the case, you are better not to use the word, logic, anymore.

For me, I believe we are heading to the right direction and the players are like any normal people who wanna be successful by putting the hard work which has been what brought them to their current status, being one of elite athletes.
Martial and Rashford have played under four managers now and have been very inconsistent. This is a football club not a charity. They can put all the hard work they want, if they’re not good enough, they’re not good enough, and people have the right to have reservations about them (regardless of whether Ronaldo stays or not).

No. But its not the end of the fecking world like some have suggested. People need to stay calm and not get hysterical.
At best he was only going to stay another season -- and one which would have caused massive headaches for ETH in trying to fit him into an ETH system.

At worst, Ronaldo would have caused disharmony within the squad, as he did last season when players have to do all the running and grafting for him just to suit his limitations. This would only cause problems in the long term. Maybe players like FdJ would hesitate to come to a team that would be so dysfunctional when it's pretty obvious that Ronaldo doesn't fit or certainly a massive compromise to an ETH system.

I'd love to know who Ronaldo expected us to sign this summer?

If (and Christ that's looking like a big if right now) we get FDJ that's an amazing signing is it not? Ok Malacia and Eriksen might not get the mouths watering but they'll be decent squad players and then there's Martinez who depending on where he plays could be integral to what ETH wants to do next season

I can't imagine Ronaldo would have been thrilled had we signed a Haaland or Nunez who would have taken his place in the XI so what's he after?
- DM to stop us leaking goals - Bissouma - 35m
- RW like Dembele to feed Ronaldo and beat players - free
- FDR - 80m

Ronaldo knows what's up, we should make him part time DOF

Everyone has the right to have their own opinion. I just strongly disagree some popular opinions here. They say Rashford, martial, Maguire, Shaw, and etc, are lazy and crap. Those are purely illogical nonsense.

This won't hurt us imo. It just moves up the scheduled new striker signing by 12 months.

The fact we're losing our commercial poster boy also means the Glazers will be much more willing to free up some cash from the 2023 transfer kitty.

I know we're trying to move away from Galactico-style signings this summer. But I think the board will need to make an exception in this case - partly to maintain our advertising profile and partly for the fact proven goalscorers always cost a lot of money. I'm fairly certain they will.

The only bad thing about this is the uncertainty it creates for the next few weeks. But let's be honest: Ronaldo was always going to be a square peg in a round hole under Ten Hag. Obviously if he stays, it'll be good for the continuity of the team so that's not all bad. But If he goes, it'll give the manager more flexibility to play the way he wants, which I think is a net positive for the club.

This isn’t just about Ronaldo, this is about years of mismanagement and forward planning of the club, only having your player of the year up sticks and leave is the cherry on top.

We’ve known Mata, Matic, Lingard, Pogba and Cavani needed replacements for months even years and nothing.

The idea FDJ would be happier playing with Anthony Martial is laughable and this top red bullshit of “you’re being hysterical” is beginning to look very stupid for those boasting it.

I agree. Things were progressing albeit not at the pace we wanted. Then suddenly there was a huge drop-off -- with a dysfunctional squad, cliques and nobody working for working other. Pogba was inconsistent and was tough to fit into the United teams under several managers. But by all accounts, he was quite liked by all the players within the squad.
But Ronaldo had quite a different effect -- also difficult to blend into any progressive playing style but unlike Pogba, was disruptive and caused disharmony within the ranks.
Good riddens.

That was the point of getting a DOF to ensure continuity in our approach and a strategic direction in how we buy players. I have said this many times -- the fact that Woodward had resisted at appointing a DOF and one with substantial powers and autonomy points to the fact that Woodward wanted to consolidate all the power for himself.

You live by the sword, you die by it.

We are just suffering the blowback of all the stupid ill-informed decisions made by Woodward/Glazers including getting Ronaldo 2.0 for commercial reasons but at the cost of a massive failure last season.

I didn't watch Martial for the whole season because he was on loan. And I haven't heard anyone report about Rashford refusing flat out to apply pressure off the ball.
I'm no Ronaldo fan and will be happy if he leaves but you shouldn't need reports to tell you Rashford didn't try last season. Anyone who watched him knew he didn't give near his best off the ball. Everyone commented on it here and even Gary Neville and Carragher highlighted it.

You were initially replying to @pocco mainly about Martial and Rashford, and said that we were heading in the right direction with them (among others). Without using words like lazy or crap, these two have been very inconsistent under four managers now. Therefore I strongly disagree that we are moving in the right direction with them as Centre Forwards. We can agree to disagree on it, but that was my point.

Sancho = first season bedding in hopefully.
Rashford = prolonged bad form and poor attitude. Always been a purple patch player even when his numbers added up by the end of the season.
Martial= Just not got what it takes and it's been evident for a long time.
Elanga= young and inexperienced, but from what I've seen at first and youth team level he's not going to be top class and he's not a big goalscorer either.

All of the above are best on the LW.

Now tell me your logic behind your opinion that "we're heading in the right direction".

Reports suggest even the club don't want to sell Ronaldo, with ETH planning to use him, and that if we do then ETH is going to push for another attacker. So even the club probably don't agree with you.

But I'm intrigued anyway.

Yeah agreed. Its the distraction which is unwanted... But it works out better for the rebuild. Ronaldo was always gonna be forced in and we'd have to change system due to the lack off ball movement and his age. He's also a distraction during the season, as there will inevitably be some teething issues. He would complain at the first sign of bad form which will inevitably happen but this way we can rebuild properly and with everyone working together for the club, not just themselves. We need someone to add in attack, but im also expecting improvement from everyone already here

I've criticised Rashford plenty on here and he was even left out of the team for periods of the season by Rangnick. But Ronaldo being the most advanced forward has to provide a trigger for the press which he's refused to do according to Simon Stone. The quicker they jettison him off, the quicker we can resemble a functional unit imo.

Like I predicted months ago, Ronaldo wouldn't make noise before last season ends. He will wait until end of season and he will start making noise to leave. There is no way Ronaldo is staying unless if ten Hag tells him that we are challenging the league next season. The guy wants to win major trophies like the league title or CL.

This on the Glazers, simple as. United have shown no ambition to get back competing. United's inability to read the fecking room as usual, lack of planning. No intent in this window to get back competing after our worst season. Don't want leaks given how Arnold and Murtough are taking there time to get right deals, money talks and bullshit walks.

This was the summer of apparent rebuild and revolution, we are close to getting a back up lb from Holland to challenge Shaw. Henderson loaned(not sold), we are close to a month away from start of season. Not only are we not ready, we are weaker than we were at the end of last season currently. People say the timing is bad, if United had been on it from June we could do something with this situation, I genuinely think Ronaldo has been bullshited by club and isn't going to hang around to not compete. It's a circus here, youse all know it, this is the start of the implosion. Fans are going to go for Glazers if he's sold. Knowing the owners probably try and put Charlie Mc Neil up front add it to things they will do next summer. Build a new stadium, update training facilities, address dm and try to sell Eric Bailly. Circus
Agree with this. We are stuck with the likes of Maguire Martial and Rashford. Lets give them another chance. feck off.

People over here are reacting to anything the media says. I have seen media articles for like ten years and I rarely see them get anything right.

If Ronaldo wanted to leave, he will sound out like he did in 07/08 and 17/18. I don't buy the CL story as he could have left before ETH came in if that was the case. He could be concerned about the ambition but he is not making a move just yet.

Let him go. Left us once, when he was reaching his peak, he might as well leave us again.
If he had had a better offer last year, he wouldn't have come back anyway

its because the team isn’t going for an all-out rebuild. He knows this team needs 5 plus 70 mil rated players.

He pulled exactly the same stunt this time last year at Juve. Last-minute request for a transfer when the club were planning for him as part of the team.
As much money as he is worth, at some point it cant be about the money but more for the greater good. His legacy at United will be fecked by this tantrum throwing.

During his 1-1 talk with ETH, he knows what ETH is expecting in terms of incoming squad members and is just waiting to see if the club delivers according to ETH's requests. Everything else is just a imaginary fantasy tale by the media.

Think it's no coincidence that article came out about him wanting to see ambition from the club to stay on, then a week later an article about him wanting to leave says to me he's got word that De Jong is staying.

Yip, I don’t think people actually get the reality of this (even if you don’t like him) this is very bad and we may have to scrap other transfers to fix the forward line which leaves us in the exact same position as last season.
This is my thinking, and we would be having to do address this when pretty much all the gettable forwards have either moved/locked into contracts.

It's not even that we need Ronaldo, it's more that the alternatives are such a drop off.

I don't think this will necessarily happen (him leaving), but I think he's going to have to grit and bare it for one more season.

Yeah the drop off is huge and as many have said we are now paying a heavy price for not properly rivalling the scousers for Nunez

Ronaldo obviously doesn't suit a pressing style, not debating that.

My point of contention was with you saying you had seen no reports of Rashfords lack of pressing. Rashfords laziness was clear for all to see.

Now if you' re point is that Rashford is a better candidate for a pressing game than Ronaldo is then I'd agree. That only reinforces that he was a lazy sod last year though.
I'm disgusted with Rashford, he let us down when we needed him most. Ronaldo worked harder than him, no question. Ability and effort are different things.

We cant get Nunez at 100m and get FdJ the same window. That would leave us with nothing for any other positions. Just not possible.

Agree. Ronnie did exactly the same thing to Juve this time last year. They must be smirking away and thinking 'i told you so'.
Another of Woodward's bright ideas coming back to bite us.
