Yes it does and it takes away from all the uncertainty heading into a new season to have a deal signed before a transfer window even opens, rather than be stuck in a saga during pre-season or when the season is about to start.
The Haaland saga started last season. He was an option when Pep was going after Kane last year. It took so many months that City missed out on signing him during the season itself and as a result failed to win the CL because they couldn't finish their chances against Madrid.

They had to wrap up the Haaland deal after the season was already over. It was super inefficient and super late.

It wasn't efficient. There have been back-and-forth negotiations and speculation for months. The only way it was efficient is if you ignore the entire lead up and only concentrate on the final few days. But you could do that with any transfer ever made. It was a marathon not a sprint, and you only want to talk about what happened in the final straight.

In any case, it makes no difference if the deal was signed before or after the start of the window. The season is still weeks away and no major players (including Haaland) are even back from holiday yet.
I don't get how people try to compare our transfers situation to City's. City have a manager that is considered top two in the world, has been settled in his role for years, has oil money, an already great team and are perennial title favourites. We didn’t even know who our manager was until a few months ago and don't have champions league. Then you add the De Jong complication, us tried to shift our reputation of being transfer mugs and I get why things take time. Also if ETH is as much detail orientated guy as they say, we can't just chop and change targets, especially the ones he considers key to his system being implemented as soon as possible. People need to calm down a bit and judge at the end of the window.

Bloody hell each tweet about Frenkie saying it’s getting closer and or it’s even closer is starting to make it all sound like a Gillette razor advert where every new razor is the closest shave yet.

Must be close to shaving down the jaw bone at this rate.

Who gives a shit how long the negotiations lasted if it meant he was on board before the transfer window even started

Exactly, the other thing is we can't forget how much background cost it would have taken. That was basically the whole point of Halaand signing for Dortmund with a relatively small release clause. It basically makes the selling club powerless and means the agent and the player control everything on the next transfer. Dortmund was at least fortunate that he was good right away so they got maximum field value out of him, rather than him getting good towards the back end of his contract.

Haaland wasn’t for sale last year and everyone knew his release clause kicked in this summer. He was efficiently sealed before the window even opened.

Always liked Fabrizio :wenger:

Barca: We are doing everything to keep Frenkie, he just needs to reduce salary.
Frenkie: My priority is to stay but salary reduction unlikely.
United: Levers needed?

City were ready to pay £100m for Kane. Haaland was available at that price last summer. Direct discussions have been going on since at least then. It was a saga by any reasonable measure.

City spent months talking to Spurs about Kane, but fecked it up. Then they fecked up every other alternative option and were left holding their dicks for the season. It was directly responsible for losing them the CL. They carried on their negotiations for Haaland after the season started, despite it already being too late.

So the recent announcement wasn't early. It was 12 months too late. Like I said, it's a marathon not a sprint and you only seem to want to look at the final straight.

Check the first tweet in this thread: https://www.redcafe.net/threads/erling-haaland.459484/

Guardiola's been after Haaland since at least 2020. And he's desperate for a striker since at last summer.

Haaland was not for sale last year and Dortmund slapped a 200M€ pricetag on him to ward off potential suitors. He was only realistically available this summer regardless of when Guardiola, Madrid or whomever else wanted him. Kane was blocked from leaving by Levy, that’s all it was.

Fully agreed. Don't give two shits about what other teams do so this is very much welcomed.
Also agree. This is a united forum and I come here for united content. Not some shite about teams and leagues I've have no interest in. I have it filtered to united only which is super.

We've spent all this time negotiating with Barca but haven't even discussed personal terms with FDJ's camp yet?!
Pretty sure you need an agreement with the selling club before you can negotiate a contract with the player

Its not uncommon to discuss personal terms after negotiations between clubs have concluded.
Clubs usually have a rough idea about the demands. What Fabrizio is probably referring to is a formal discussion with lawyers, agents and documents present. That'll probably take place after he returns from holiday.

Tyrel Malacia supposed to be in the U.K. today doing his medical. But no news on that, instead it’s shifted to we’ve offered £37m for Lisandro?

Is it me or does it seem like our club are leaking fake info to Twitter journalist to quieten fans?

Last week anti glazer sentiment was very high… every tweet from their US Bucanners team was getting hijacked by United fans. Then all of a sudden “de Jong deal very close” “United sign Malacia” but now it’s all gone quiet again we ain’t actually signed anyone, yet, our star player wants to leave and if anything de Jong seems further away…

The way clubs approuch those deals depend on case by case. Barcelona apparently discussed personal terms with Raphinha in advance. Chelsea had tratatives with Leeds to discuss with Raphinha in a second moment. In both cases in general clubs are going talk to agents in the first place to check if they aren't 100% wasting their time.

Nope, it's almost always done in advance through intermediaries. At least at a high level - I'm sure all the legalese and fine print gets ironed out later.

They have to say that because it's technically illegal to discuss personal terms before a fee is accepted (but in reality everybody does)

I'd imagine we know what he wants, when he is represented by people who represent two our players (van de Beek and Lindelof) and until recently Malacia.

Ya, we obviously know what he wants. Hopefully the bloody fee gets agreed soon though. It's taking ages considering how long ago we started discussions. In general, the lack of signings with our 1st pre-season game just over a week away is quite detrimental to our preparation for the season. The delay in the FDJ deal seems more likely to be Barcelona's fault, but he's our most important signing that our entire midfield is being built around, so the players really need time to understand how to interact with him on the pitch
