The iraqi national team's coach did not play him not even for 1 min. The Iraqi FA were angry with the coach. Now the iraqi FA are negotaioting with Carlos Queiroz to take over the team and they want to build a team around Zidane.

Same. Hoping we see more than just a Carling cup sub appearance. (Savage looked good too, but don't see a performance thread for him)

Agreed, Savage looks class too. Relatively speaking for both of course, given their profile and experience.

If he has a final ball in him then he's basically a Modric regen.
 
Classy and importantly very confident on the ball, lightweight which is to be expected at tis age, Savage looks more physically ready for a loan in England, cant help but think a continental loan would suit Iqbal more.

Personally would like to see us playing our youths more instead of the constant loans.
If it's the right club for the right player like Garner at Nott Forest then sure, but too many loans are a waste of time when the player could have progressed better with us.

We can't play x-number of youths like Barcelona but we can surely make room for more than we have in the recent years.
 
He has good ball control, retention ability and can run with the ball, which is rare in many young footballers. But I don't see he is playing to his full potential yet. Could be lack of confidence in this big match. Back passes and side passes are okay but every time he attempted a forward pass (which were far fewer than his side and back passes), most of the time he made a wrong decision. Which means he lacks confidence to build the attack based on his judgement. Still early days, but I have seen potential players like Garner, Levitt couldn't reach the heights they were supposed to due to lack of confident forward moments. Hope Z follows his own path and reaches the potential he has in him.
 
Love me a press resistant player. Always showed for the ball and showed the agility and movement of a proper midfield playmaker. Great to see. Its only a friendly, but he showed the movement, touch and turns that none of our other midfielders have shown to be capable of. I am hopefully of Garner, but he's never shown those abilities IMO. Wouldn't surprise me to see him get first team minutes if he stays and doesn't go on loan.

Obviously a lot of other things to develop and work on, but that's one absolutely key quality that you just either have it, or you don't.
 
Only watched his highlights so difficult to judge but looks a very tidy player and very good on the ball. Hope to see him get some game time this season
 
Has some talent, great feet and motor. Rubbish end product - needs to work on this. Reminds me of David Silva the way glides past people.
 
Zidane was good, I think people are overrating Savage's performance. We lost the midfield battle in the second half due to him, so I don't see how that performance is being praised.

It was the 2nd team against Liverpool's more experienced players. More disappointed with the likes of DVB and AWB than Savage.

Savage showed good energy, put his foot in and was willing to try to play with and without the ball. It's as 'good' as you can get in a pre-season in a weakened team. Can't read too much in it of course but promising signs.
 
First time really seeing him today, impressed... You could tell within the first few minutes that he has a bit of class about him - his touch, movement with the ball, weight of pass etc.

There's no reason why he can't be a squad player this season.

Jesus…two kids with approximately 10 minutes of senior football between them prior to today go up against Thiago and Fabinho. Both did incredibly well and anyone who expected them to “win” that battle is a moron. Composure, work rate and commitment. Well done lads.

I get the curiosity as they both seem to have something special about them, however, I really hope this doesn't turn into the typical Martial vs Rashford, Bruno vs Pogba type rivalries.

I understand that, but the overpraise our youngsters get for looking like they can kick a ball is what creates the environment for us to overrate them. It may seem harsh, but I really believe part of why we are in our current state is due to this. As a club we get a bit sentimental with our young players and overrate them for the simplest performances. From McTominay, Mengi, Tuanzebe to Lingard and Pereira.

Zidane looked great technically and looks like someone who can be special

Savage was the deeper midfielder tasked with supporting the defence to get the ball up the pitch ( Telles was also poor at this). In a game where everyone bashed our attackers, who are also youngsters, the players tasked with getting them the ball in comfortable zones is getting praised.

Then in a few weeks, some of these fans will ask why he isn't getting played as the performance gets completely overrated.

Zidane was great to see. Why? Because he showed the ability to collect the ball in deep, tight spaces. He showed really close control. He showed good dribbling ability, so despite not necessarily being as consistently effective due to the opposition, you could tell that you were seeing high potential.

People are praising Savage, not for good tackling ability or good passing, but for showing good energy.

Not sure if you are winding me up… “Comfortable zones”??? Being a deep lying midfielder against a pressing side like Liverpool is literally the most difficult position on the pitch. Those fukers usually thrive off Fred and McTominays lack of composure. Considering there was no calming presence in there…with psycho Bailey and invisible VDB to account for…both young midfielders acquitted themselves admirably.

On their U23 showings Hannibal and it's not even close. That doesn't necessarily mean Iqbal won't handle the step up to senior level better.
 
I don't watch our reserves anymore but I just watched the match and my god he is a proper, proper player.

I agree. In a way, Iqbal benefited from having a lack of experience around him as it allowed him to take responsibility. So far, Hannibal has not had that chance. Exciting times with these two and Garner coming through.
 
The La Pelopina turn separates press resistant players from normal ones, and Iqbal has always excelled at this move. Him, Mejbri and Galbraith are our best three at this.

Frenkie de Jong is a MASTER of this and hopefully all of our talents from here on will take note and make the move their own, too.

So this is who that kid was.

Was watching the first 25 mins of the second half and was thinking this kid was so infuriating with his constant back passes even though an easy forward pass was on.
