For a "midget" he did awfully well against taller strikers like Darwin and Haland. Don't remember people calling Mascherano a midget and "shit in the air" when he was the Barca CB and they were winning titles. I think this will turn out to be a great transfer.

Den Haag really likes his old players, huh. Hope Murtaugh knows what he's doing.

Also, isn't this Lizandro fella a bit short to be playing centre-back? 5"9 I heard? Does that work in the EPL? Unless he's playing in midfield.

Wonder if the history of Ajax training means we'll see Lizandro, Frankie and Der Beek in midfield together.

In any case, don't want to see Lizzie McGuire in defence - Rafa Varane is too good for the bench.

I think they did the sensible thing actually, nobody else is dumb enough to offer them such amount even if he won the bloody cup.
He’s their player of the season and they wanted to keep him but he was adamant on leaving for the PL. Everything else is spin.

That's a great question. Don't think anyone's brought it up yet.

Completely agree mate. We're signing players with a view to implementing a imposing brand of football and that can only be a positive thing.

And since Fergie has retired, we've wasted huge amounts of money without ever having a strategy in mind on how we want to play a proactive brand of football, and have instead carried on with a reactive, counter attacking approach.

We can't even keep the ball to a good enough standard and signings like Martinez and hopefully de Jong will go a long way to rectifying those issues. A team's defence improves instantly if they can control the game in possession along with the attack.
Agreed on all points Adnan - as always! :)

Watch everyone be totally wrong and this guy ends up as the DM.

Seems very strange to keep Maguire as captain to bench him. Varane ain't being benched either when he's fit you wouldn't think.

That would actually be the best case scenario. Is he good enough as a CDM? Any one with more insight?

what makes me think midfield is when ETH answered where we need to strengthen he only said midfielders and attackers. no mention of cb.

I think with varane lindelof maguire bailly and martinez covering that’s plenty of options.

i’d like to see martinez at cdm with de jong and fernandes ahead.

In all seriousness... I don't know the first thing about professional defending, don't think anybody here truly knows either. Maybe we have reservations about Lisandro's height because we've never seen it before (except for Cannavaro). If we think he needs height to defend a cross, we can just use other tall players, we have plenty. If he possesses all the necessary qualities, why not?

It might be the case that he plays in midfield with de Jong, but maybe our fellow Ajax fans can educate us on the possibility/success of that. The only problem I see with that is we'll have 2 players who would get in each other's way, occupying the same positions albeit for different purposes.

It could also be possibly confusing for the rest of team. Is the base of midfield a place to (a) run the game from [de Jong] or (b) where possession is won and handed off immediately to attacking players [Lisandro]

No idea if Lisandro plays that way in midfield, I'm assuming not though, because he's primarily a defender

I think so too.

Without knowing much about him he does seem to be very adventurous for a CB. He's obviously a natural DM too by trade so wouldn't surprise me.

That’s exactly how it works. No nonsense mode. He isn’t good enough to be in the first XI let alone be a captain. Would have sent the right message.
This isn’t a tv show. Maguire is first of all a human, and secondly rather popular in the dressing room. If he did that he would lose the respect of the other players. So yeah, thats not exactly how it works unless you think like a 13 year old.

As a 5 foot 8 guy this thread is not good for my self esteem.
Hey, Alexander conquered a huge chunk of the East and he was way shorter than that, Napoleon was 5'7 and Churchill 5'6. Shorties unite :D

On a serious note, Mascherano was the same height as Martinez and he was pretty good to say the least. The height thing does help centre backs but if he's got a good jump and he's combative it really shouldn't be a problem.

Exactly this. Fabio Cannavaro was 1.76 and one of the best defenders in the world for years. Mascherano was 1.74 and arguably the best player of WC 2014. Puyol, Baresi and even Koeman weren’t that tall. They all could eat taller players in the air for breakfast.
There have been a handful over the last 40 years but most good CBs have been rather tall. I would normally not see this as an issue but we have had problems at setpieces on the past. In open play however, I think with good press we will avoid a lot of high precision crosses.
( Also, Mascherano didn’t play CB at WC2014 if I remember correctly. )

Back 5 now looks like...

De Gea
Dalot Varane Martinez Malacia

Bit better than Maguire and Shaw anyway. Now we just need to sell and buy a RB and the defence is set.

2nd team can be

Dalot Lindelof Maguire Shaw

Progress.

Honestly think we've picked him over Torres as he's comfortable operating as a DM. He'll offer cover for CB, especially with injury prone Baily and Varane, but when they are fit he'll play DM role. Probably even the furthest left in a back 3 in some games.

I don't think you maintain Maguire captain to then drop him to the bench for Martinez. He will be in midfield.

No chance. Ten Hag merely said Maguire is currently the Captain and he will review all of the players. Maguire will be phased out of the lineup.

Are you from Amsterdam? Cause it sounds like you smoke a lot of weed. For one VDS is not responsible for transfers and not involved in those negatiations. Secondly, even if he was, why in the world would he? He's working for Ajax, not Man Utd.

All the concern about a lack of transfers and here we are about to confirm two signings in one fell swoop.

Welcome to Manchester, Lis and Ro Martinez!

Would change "Varane" to "Varane/Maguire".

I don't even slightly buy the idea that opting against removing the captaincy from Maguire means he will play every week (especially as many club captains aren't guaranteed starters for their side) but games will be coming thick and fast this season and there's a good chance Varane's fitness doesn't hold up either.

Also not at all convinced Malacia starts ahead of Shaw.
