I really want to know how T Malacia 22 at 5’7 is better than a 6’1 Fully fit Luke Shaw who should be coming into his prime at 26, many of us united fans forget, LVG loved him and but for his serious double leg break would have been contending for best left back in the PL every season with Robertson. I just can’t wait to see the threads in a few months when we play 5’7 L Martinez with a 5’7 T Malacia and teams target the right hand side far post with late runs from 6’1 number 8’s and inverted strikers watch Ricarlson , Kulveserski and Perisic have a field day fior Spurs if we are. Dumb enough to play to sub 5’8 players on the left side of our defence. Can you imagine Kane, DCL, C Wilson, Haland and Nunez they will move from Varane/Maguire area and time their runs in between LCB and LB.

Luke shaw is ahead of T Malacia, that was clear in ETH selection in the first half against Liverpool and let’s hope that Malacia competition brings out the very best of him from 2 years ago and the Euro’s.
I really don't get this, he's the best when fully fit nonsense about Shaw, same is often said about Jones and Bailly. He doesn't look fit, he doesn't produce it often enough, he's been here 8 years now ffs and hasn't improved as expected.

He's had a few purple patches and had one full season where he was fit and really good. Telles came in and he realised that he had to work hard to keep his place. Last season he realised Telles was shit and was phoning it in.

Arrivals like Malacia and Martinez should give all these gowls at the back the kick up the hole they need to play better, work harder and improve. They won't be guaranteed a starting spot anymore if they don't.

They'll find out fast enough, he'll be a fan favourite very soon I reckon.

I think some severely underestimate how good Ajax has been the past few years, despite playing in the Dutch League.
It’s always hard to know how well a player will adapt and I think with every transfer of a non-PL player there must be some patience. Sancho has struggled with the physicality and pace in the PL but I have no doubt he will be successful in the end.

so why do the likes of City and Liverpool (Spurs too now) get things done with less fuss? Even the newly promoted teams have finalised more deals than us. It is vital that a manager gets players in early for pre-season, even more so when they themselves are new
It’s because you invest all your interest in Utd and not City and Liverpool transfers.

When we hopefully complete the signings of Malacia, Eriksen, FDJ, Martinez …. Other fans will look at it and say Utd got those transfers done easily. It’s because they’ve not been following the chase like us.

I see fans from rival teams having constant meltdowns about transfers not coming.

True, you never know. Doesnt help that Sancho came in a terribly coached team after a difficult summer for him either.

I think Martinez will fit right in though, his mentality, physicality and hardness is remarkable. Closest we would have to Keane I reckon in our squad. And I realise I am making some big statements.

Not bad that part of our defence is being rebuilt with malacia and martinez. If we can get a RB as well then thats the rebuild done.

Yes, but you take the time to explain and break certain things down that need to be said with patience and insight, which is admirable.

The context of shining in a midfield for Ajax as opposed to our bunch of barely recognisable midfielders is also tossed to the side; being a D or C midfielder among legitimate better midfielders is not the same as coming to a club with nary a midfielder on a passing grade and vying for a place amongst them. Even if the statement rings true at Ajax, one man's trash is another's treasure couldn't be more true in relation to us currently compared to optimised, free-flowing midfields. Same goes for any area of the pitch, context is always necessary.

Yes, even if you don't rate the Eredivisie, you can't just put the achievements of Ajax in Europe to the side to suit your argument.
Cheers mate, very exciting times.

I am looking forward to watching him play and he could be the pioneer for short CBs in the Premier League!

Indeed.

Just last season City missed out on their main summer target entirely after a drawn-out saga. And even this season for Spurs a "simple" move for Djed Spence has dragged out for weeks. Then you have a side like Arsenal seemingly missing out on multiple first choice targets after pursuing them for weeks, Chelsea only just signing a CB having reportedly made tentative moves for several since the start of the summer, etc. Barcelona have their own transfer shitshows ongoing, while even a side like Madrid suffered with their multi-year Mbappe pursuit coming to nothing.

We don't have a monopoly in deals falling through or protracted transfer sagas.

Though excellent on the ball, you prefer someone even better on the ball in midfield, someone more dynamic, better dribblers in midfield.

As for Ajax, Martinez is better on the ball than Alvarez, but Alvarez gives the midfield more of a physical presence and he is even more of a bulldozer. Wins the ball and gives it to the defenders/Gravenberch.

The buildup started from the back for Ajax, and Martinez, Blind, Mazraoui, Timber were ideal for that. Mind, I can't think of many teams who had a set of better ball playing defenders.
I can't think of a single team who had a better ball playing defense than Mazraoui - Timber - Martinez - Blind.

Timber/Martinez was a world class central duo in the style that Ajax plays. We won all six group matches in CL with a goal balance 20-5, despite having a poor goalkeeper and an average midfield. Schreuder (our new coach) mentioned he really wanted to to keep three guys: Timber, Martinez and Antony.

Because Timber is an Ajax youth product and has insane dribbling and technical skills he's immensely popular and hyped.
It overshadows the excellent performances by Martinez. But Martinez was player of the season for a reason.
Martinez brings composure and consistency, which would be a huge benefit to a disfunctional team as United was last season.

I'm happy with the signing, without knowing much about the player. But I'm really unsure where he fits in? I don't think he replaces Maguire or Varane? Varane is injury prone though. I don't think Ten Hag is planning on three at the back, or did he ever play with that system? Or will he play in the midfield, like he did for one season under Ten Hag?

Agree with everything you say.

Liverpool and City probably, but our midfield and Onana were relatively much weaker.

I don't really get this signing unless he's to play DM. He's a CB or LB otherwise, both which are relatively well filled - I can't see him starting above Maguire (unfortunately) nor Varane, and nor can I see him starting ahead of Shaw. If he's a 3rd CB, ok, but that's not cheap, nor if he's a 2nd LB (in which case why did we buy Malacia?). Odd.

Although Ten Hag has said that he didn’t have the legs for a midfielder in the quotes that have been posted, I assume that would be for more of box to box role. Quotes also from Ten Hag also said to get the best out of de Jong he has to roam which means he leaves the midfield area open. I can see Martinez as more of a sitter in midfield covering the space left by de Jong, . Particularly as Ten Hag has said midfielders are the priority.

Maybe just wishful thinking but it would seem like a good midfield combo.

So in a way, Alvarez suited Gravenberch? You think Martinez is good enough to play CDM in the PL?

he’ll replace Maguire in my opinion, I doubt Hag is happy about relying on Harry to turn things around

and Varane is super injury prone

then we have the option to move to a back three and push him into midfield to switch to a back four in game without making a sub

Did they get players in before pre-season? that's the only question you have to ask... then take a look at United
It's easier when you don't have a new manager. They could've had their list of target prepared ages ago whereas Ten Hag was focused on Ajax until the end of the season. Only natural that it takes a bit more time, especially since it seems Ten Hag is in charge of which targets to go after.

I don’t know why so many people are confused about this signing?
ETH has gone in, see the bunch of bed ridden, shit bags that we have as CBs and decided I’m getting a new one, that can not only defend on the front foot but is actually excellent on the ball too.
the question is not which CB he replaces but who plays alongside him

People are weirdly resistant to the idea that one of Maguire and Varane will have to sit on the bench. Even though one was terrible last season, the other struggled with fitness, Martinez is obviously the best choice for LCB and games will come so thick and fast this season that there will inevitably be rotation. So much so that even a manager who tends to rotate as little as ETH has now repeatedly pointed to the effect the WC will have on the season.

another question, which CB will go? Someone, maybe 2, need to go. How many CB will we have after this signing? 8?

I really don’t doubt his mentality or work ethic. But as for every other transfer like this there is the questions around pace and physicality of the league; can the player do the same things he can today with the ball at PL pace, throughout the match and against teams who are very good at pressing? Imo Sancho couldn’t do that.

At the same time, one key in ETH type of football seems to be to be able to handle press without losing the initiative, and even use the opponents press to build up for attack. To do that we need to bring in players who have those skills.

About the terrible coaching. There are many players in the squad who will benefit from a coach who also is a proper trainer. I expect several players to develop and take the next step.

I am not sure he is anywhere close to Keane. But obviously who am I to say as only watched a couple of Ajax matches and various YouTube clips. Gives me the impression that he is more of a physical Daley Blind though.

Honestly if we could get decent money for one of Lindelof, Maguire or Varane, then why not one of them? Whichever is going to be 4th choice. Keep Bailly and/or Axel as 5th and 6th choice. Sell VDB also and we'll have a nice bit of money towards Antony.

shaw had a double leg break I was at the game in Holland it was one of the worst I’ve ever seen, he’s done amazing to play again but at 26 I see him seeing off Malacia and Chillwelll with relative ease, because if ever a player had everything, pace power, technical ability to play either as inverted full back or overlap and create from a wide area then Luke shaw has that, he’s always been a modern full back that’s been unlucky with injuries, how many English born Man United Defenders have scored in a major international final or made team of the tournament only Rio, Bobby Charlton , Nobby Stiles and Luke Shaw hugely he’s not overrated and yes he needs competition but people forget how much he covered Harry Maguire deficiencies from the previous 2 seasons for club and country as soon as Telles came in the team , Maguire lack of pace and positional sense was exposed so is Luke shaw going to play 40 games and T Mallicia 20 I hope so because that means we have. Managed our injuries better than usual.

It’s the Joe Hart - Pep scenario.

People were gobsmacked when he walked straight in and binned off Englands number 1. It looked mental but he was proven right.

ETH clearly needs that position to do certain things, the squad doesn’t have anyone that can do it, so he’s prioritising a singing in that position.
