Or ridicule.
Why? He will still earn like 10 million a year. He will live in the City he likes and in the club he wants. When you make so much money I don't think it really makes that much of a difference in the quality of life if you reduce by half. You would still enough money to live in luxury for the rest of your life unless you do some crazy stuff.

If he really reduces his salary then I will believe his words saying Barca is his dream club and I will like him to stay forever. So far I didn't care too much if he was sold. But if he does something like that he will deserve a lot of praise.
Wouldn't blame you one bit. If a United Player was willing to take a significant financial hit just to play for the club then I'd feel the same as you.

But we do. Any player who stays beyond this transfer window will be taking a pay cut due to missing out on CL last season.

I really enjoy my job and I'm very happy in the city that I'm living in.

However, if my employer came to me and told me that I needed to take a 50% pay cut because they want to bring in some new people, one of whom is at the end of his career and will be retiring in 5 years. I'd be clearing my desk now.

I chose to believe that despite all the evidence the people who run our club are not complete idiots. Surely it is impossible for us to expend so much time and energy on one player who has no intention of coming. Especially our manager and members of our squad have the personal phone number of De Jong. I can only assume that what's going on is pure politics and is a strategy from the De Jong side to get as good a deal from Barcelona as possible.

Call me a dreamer but I believe that this could be a transfer that suddenly comes through during the dying days of the window.

Frenkie's being asked to take a 50%(so I've read) paycut though, that's pretty significant you got to say.
I think someone did the math on twitter and said he'll be giving up 16m in wages + the 17m deferred if he signs a new contract. Just to stay as a backup to Kounde and Kessie. That's beyond loyalty.

Fair enough if he values his life in Barcelona that much, but I really can't see it

So let's get this straight, he does them a favor by deferring 17 mil worth of his salary, they, in turn tell him to feck off we aren't paying it and btw we want you to take a pay cut. Oh and could you feck off to Utd as well? If this is all true, the man doesn't have a backbone. His wife probably walks all over him.

But it's not the same for us than for them. I mean 50% of De Jong's salary in one year is much more than what will make in our whole lives.

Because he should have some self respect. It's a matter of principle, if nothing else. He owes Barcelona absolutely nothing. He has a contract and a wage in which he is entitled to. What happens if he signs this new contract? He earns half as much as he currently does and still doesn't get to play? Great deal. I can understand why Barcelona fans would appreciate his heroic actions, but in my opinion he would just look like a soft touch.

Ultimately, if FDJ is owed £17m which is what the consensus seems to be over the delay, then it makes zero sense for Barca not to pay it him because they’d be losing £17m to make back about £60m in transfer fees. So come the deadline they would do it.

I don’t believe that’s the issue here though. I genuinely think the guy just desperately wants to stay at Barca. It’s going to come down to whether he folds or not.

Hang on... are you really telling me i should stop posting on this thread because i'm confident about him joining? Thats a new one to me.
what’s funny is people not so long ago said if we can’t get fdj done we should get other targets in. We did , two of them, two of them that compliment his skill set and style of play. Martinez and eriksen have been brought to play cb and cm in a team around fdj.

now People losing their shit must know we will only need to wait a day or so for this to be resolved. FdJ has discussed his position with xavi, he can no longer pretend not to know what’s going on, he has laportas position in the news. If he is staying we will know shortly I’m sure. If we hear nothing you have to assume FdJ is not accepting the new half your wages/squad player offer. With a firm offer from barca he has to shit or get off the pot.

if so then eth has to decide if there are any players good enough for good money who can play alongside eriksen.

neves can’t play alongside eriksen, neither can tielemans, sangare is a prospect but no where near ready. Ruiz is a possibility, but dealing with lazio is worse than barca. The other options we can pick up are hideously expensive, or you are heading into unknown territory. My guess is no fdj, he moves eriksen into a dlp, may not be fdj, but he has played as cm playmaker. Then put Fred in there with him. No point in buying neves at 60-70m when he is slower than an oil tanker and cant play that role anyway and would require another player alongside him.

People saying he will lose half his wages are missing that if FdJ takes a contract on half of his standard wage or what he was getting paid today not only does he end up being paid around 49m less than he was expecting (8m per year plus the extra 17m he deferred). Maybe FdJ will take that and say I would prefer to stay. He is also being told he won't play as a CM but must fight it out with a brand new CB, Pique, Garcia, etc, knowing that Kounde has to be first choice, Pique second, so 3rd choice CB at best... Honestly if he is willing to do all that just to stay at Barca, or because he is so cucked by his gf into staying in Barca, then I am afraid he needs to get a bit of self respect. Its like an abusive relationship at that point, if you can't get out despite the fact that your partner is telling you she wants half your money, and that you won't even be her first choice then you are beyond help. If he think EtH will rescue him next year I don't see it, he will have burnt his bridges with him by that point, probably killed any chance he has of playing for his country as first choice at the WC all for a manager and club who are showing you no respect.

they dont owe him it legally, if that was the case it would not even be an issue. They have no intention of paying him the 17m whether he stays or goes.

That is the word today, but we don't know about the whole CB thing and as I said, we had LVG playing Daley Blind at CB or didn't Rice also play at CB at some point? So it isn't out of this world and as far as I know, even if Kounde would join, it isn't a real race at Barcelona around the places isn't it? Pique will be gone soon and Christensen isn't that good while Araujo is a prospect isn't he? So FDJ being used there maybe isn't even an issue for the player itself. Plus he will be part of the Barcelona project, having good players, always CL, always in the race for national titles. This isn't something we can guarantee at all.

And for the 50% wage cut - this is true, but the 50% aren't some arbitrary number, afaik. Part of the rebuilt there is getting the wage structure in order and therefore they capped wages at 10 million per year. Which applied to all new signings as well (think except for Lewa). So if FDJ is somewhat reasonable and intelligent, he could understand the need of the club to do that without taking it personal.

Not going to take any blame away from Barcelona. I think it is a farce that these guys are even able to bring in players, especially as they at least have a productive academy who could produce enough material for them to at least stay competitive for a while.

Whether they owe him 17m or not, the point still stands that the only hold up would be FDJ desire to stay or leave.

It seems to be the constant reporting of him wanting his 17m. If that was the deal breaker, Barca would pay it without a doubt. But that can’t be the issue.

Erm Barca need every cent. I don't see how they would just pay him 17m if they can get out of it.

Why would they pay it? They have no need to. Ideally they sell him for 60m, spend that on Silva and dont pay him any of the money owed. Or worst case for them is he takes a pay cut and waives the 17m and they keep him, and they dont get silva. Legally they have no reason to pay the money

Rice has not played CB for a long time, mostly as a young kid.

The situation seems to be that Barça owe FDJ a crazy amount of money over the next 4 years - up to €109.38m (inlcuding bonuses and incentives) if reports are correct. This is the contract Barça and FDJ agreed to and are both legally obligated to honor.

And no other club, including United, is willing to pay him this much. So, yeah, of course "Frenkie wants to stay" "Frenkie loves Barça" because staying and honoring the contract is how he makes the most money - money that has been agreed to legally by him and Barça.

Barça have absolutely no leverage over FDJ here. They can make statements via the press, threaten to move him to CB, send him to play in the reserves or whatever but they will still need to honor the contract. They cannot weasel their way out it.

Their only options are a) to pay this huge contract or, b) convince FDJ to accept a transfer. The problem with b is that no other club is willing to pay Barça transfer fee and guarantee Frenkie as much money as he would make by staying.

People who say this is embarrassing for United or that Frenkie "just loves Barça so much that he won't leave" have no clue of what's going on. This is a standoff in negotiation where Barça has kicked the can down the road and now it's time to pay. The cnuts don't want to pay, but as long as FDJ plays hardball with them, there is really nothing they can do. They can keep him and pay him or make him happy enough to accept a transfer but either way it will cost them way more than they would like.

Any fan would love for one of their players to be so noble. However, to an outsider it just looks pathetic.
I'm going to be completely honest, if it were one of our players in their prime but not a guaranteed starter or just came off a mediocre season, I'd think it was a bit desperate. Of course I'd like the player more as well. The thing with Barca fans is that they didn't like him to stay because they feel he hasn't performed to his wages in the last few years, that he doesn't deserve it, and therefore should leave because it messes up their pay structure.

I think, the question is "Does Barca really owe him that money?". As pointed out earlier today (and continued in way more detail by @Gandalf ) it isn't that the case that Barca was supposed to pay Frenkie money but simply onesidedly decided not to. It was seemingly a new contract between both parties that decreased FDJ wages for a certain time (during Covid) and compensating this by paying him way more later on in his contract duration. So not for example 10 million every year for 5 years but 5 in the first, 5 in the 2nd, 10 in the 3rd, 15 in the 4th and 5th. If that is the case then Barca doesn't owe Frenkie anything per se, as long as he hasn't completed the respective contract year. It is obviously a bad contract for Frenkie but that comes with a bad agent or bad legal advice.

All in all - it doesn't seem to be as easy as paying money where there is a contractual obligation. It is more of a moral or fairness bound obligation, way more difficult to get.

To be honest, I don't think we would show a player that level of disrespect in the first place. Not to mention that we aren't anywhere near as financially incompetent as Barcelona, despite what some of our fans would love to believe.

A philosophic story:

A man is on trial for murder, but there is no body found. His lawyer at one point turns to the jury and sais: the person presumed murdered is gonna walk in this room right now! All of the jury turns their head to look at the door.

The lawyer sais: my client is on trial for murder, but by looking at the door you have shown there is reasonable doubt that any murder happened at all. You can now only conclude my cliënt is not guilty.

The jury retreats and come back with the verdict: we unanimously find the accused guilty of murder.

The lawyer throws his hands in the air and cries: but you all looked at the door!
Spokesman: we all did, but your client didnt!

What I wanna say is.. if you still come this thread after almost 1000 pages you believe Frenkie is coming.

Or something...

Again, the deferred wages are not legally owed should his contract be void, they are WAGES that he will be paid over the next 4 years, rising per season. He has no grounds to ask the club for future wages in order to leave and he won't be getting them. End of.

If that truly is the hold up here, it's a wrap. I believe he just isn't keen on leaving tbh.
Then he can stay....on FULL wages!

There is an option c, convince Frenkie to sign a new deal on lower wages and waive any outstanding back pay.

He might be so keen to stay that he does this, in sporting terms I'd grudgingly admire him for doing this, putting football before money.

We do, it's fred and mctominay :(
Of the two I'll take Fred. Scott has to give way for Eriksen so at the end it's not so bad.

Our future CB

What the heck? Did they really put this guy in CB position?

This is probably the most messed up bizarre transfer saga I've ever come across.

Don't even know if he'll ever come to United if he's happy to be CB. Are Barca going to even honor their side of the contract and pay the man the money he's owed.

What a fecked up situation this is.
