Also, Roy Keane shook hands with Blackburn over a deal before coming to us.

Shearer had an agreement with Fergie too didn't he?
Shearer one hurts the most. Even Teletext had the story as their headline that Utd had agreed to sign Alan Shearer. Back in those days teletext was gospel truth!

I’m not sure what’s more tragic. Us missing out on FDJ or my employers paying me to sit in the FDJ thread. (Extended lunch break/afternoon break/hometime)

There is always the possibility that we are gambling on an unknown outcome, but I think you're probably right and we would have backed away by this point unless we were quite confident of an outcome that suited us.

Of course the other possibility is that we backed away ages ago and we've all just developed a narrative based on a load of 'journalists' talking bollocks all summer
That latter theory / scenario sounds possible at least; I can’t see the benefit to us of telling everyone we’re not pursuing it.

I would think if we don’t sign him we want Chelsea to pay as much as possible for him to fully wreck their budget.

Holy cow. Just waded through 20 pages of epic meltdown on the words of one man. Good game Negcafe! Even our master muppet has fallen. :annoyed:

At least we’ve bumped the thread and look on course for a new record total. Silver lining.
Has he really fallen or just faltered?

So basically, the only pros we have going for us at the moment are that we'd offer higher wages and he played under ETH for 1-1/2 seasons. Oh, and they're both dutch.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are based in London, have won the CL and league more times than we have in the past decade, and have CL next season.

I think we still get this over the line.
And they have no Dutch

Why are some of you so pessimistic? It must be exhausting.
It's exactly the other way around: how can people be relentlessly optimistic after nearly a decade of shite? The almost constant disappointment must be soul-crushing after all that optimism.

Am sure we'd know if we'd dropped out.
Didn't people say that the Reddy stuff yesterday was a brief from the club? And the Dawson stuff before too. It's obvious someone at the club is pushing out this info, so we're still in there, and if we weren't confident, we'd back away.

But as has been said, this transfer is beyond messed up, so who knows. No point melting down as of yet, we have to just wonder why were still there and waiting if he's no intention of coming to United. Makes no sense

Chelsea are now heavy favourites with the bookies to sign De Jong. We were favourites at evens with Chelsea 3/1, but overnight those odds have swapped.

What the feck happened?

:(
Must be lot of united fans taking the bet driving the odds on Chelsea's favour

Because now Ornstein is involved which means it won't be long before their two big hitters in Law & Steinberg get involved
Not really. It depends on where Ornstein is getting his info from. If his source is in Spain then Law et al might not get the same info.
Again, thats probably me being optimistic, but something this big would have been picked up quite quickly i'd imagine

Let’s not forget Robinho who signed for City but thought it was Chelsea in his press conference.
Not Chelsea but us. He was told he was joining Manchester and gave it for granted it was the red ones, as anyones here would.

Manchester = Manchester United
City = Manchester City

Well now we will certainly see how much Erik actually wants this deal and what lengths he goes to in order to make it happen

Yeah. If Reddy is the club mouthpiece then they certainly want us to think we’re still in for him. I’m overthinking this but I don’t really trust anything anymore. Not even my own mind.

In fairness, I get the opposite vibe from this thread.

Being positive has to be exhausting when random guys on twitter constantly play whack-a-mole with your spirits.

It would make even less sense for the club to maintain their optimism if they knew there was no chance of him coming. That would REALLY make us look stupid.
For them to keep putting out this info, they must have some pretty solid assurances... or ten Hag truly is an incompetent fool. I might be optimistic, but i know what i believe. Based on Timber/Brobbey, i'd say we'd move on if we were told that we didn't stand a chance.

I never understood the idea that FDJ at 25 cares so much about CL football this year and would make a career decision based on it. If he's moving...he'd want to:

- Feature
- Be used correctly (erm...not at CB)
- Build his brand
- Make money

Thats all taken care of with us. Despite our troubles we are still one of the biggest clubs in the world. He would instantly be our best MF. And I truly believe we will make top 4 if he's really that concerned about CL (which he's not). I don't think he gets these things as easily at Chelsea.
