Can't spell Mkhitaryan
Not sure that's true in the case of Jovic

Do you not think £30/40 m on a player such as Sesko is a bit of a gamble considering our budget is fairly limited?
No. I think there isn't much around for that kind of cash. A player that would play second/third fiddle to Ronaldo and Martial. It's surely better to get a good young prospect that is a physical beast and yet still has pure pace. A youngster that would have a good resale value if things didn't work out. I strongly believe that he's going to be a star regardless of where he ends up.

Can anyone explain the hype to me?
Just check a couple of YouTube videos on him. You’ll be jumping on the hype train too. Just make sure you end the video with his goal against Liverpool and him leaving Milner with broken ankles.

He’s a beast on FM, he’s number nine on some nextgen-list and he bossed against Liverpool.
He’s young and probably won’t cost much this summer compared to next.

Normally I’d take football games with a pinch of salt, but I’m fully convinced of the value of FM data. They nail it so often. When I use to play it I bought so many youngsters when I’d never heard of them in real life. I’d hear about them in real life about 2 years later. Their scouting and research is amazing.

But yeah the fact he’s regarded as a potential world class talent on there is a good sign!

he must be good on FM . I have no idea I had never heard of him tbh
Tbf it’s normal to have never heard of someone when they are so young. There’s always some breakthrough season or game which brings everyone’s attention to a hot prospect. In this case, the fact he played against a high profile team in Liverpool and was outstanding, his exposure just grew massively overnight.

Can he reliably score goals? I'm not sure we should be buying a project, given how fecked we are up top.

We've generally been good at identifying young talented players. We're just awful at developing them.

Am I the only one that thinks he looks really awkward when carrying the ball?

I obviously don’t have the knowledge that our club does regarding the player, and if they see something who am I to second guess. However, the way people on here suddenly become experts when we are linked with a player never fails to make me chuckle.

All this dilly dallying, and thinking about potentially maybe making some lowball enquiries, and now we go into the first game with no fit centre forwards and he'll end up going somewhere better.

We already have players at the club that can play second/third option up top, why spend £30/40m on another, unless the scouts are truly sure that this is the next big thing.
If Ronaldo does go then yeah for sure it makes a bit more sense to me.

We could have got Belotti on a free, that's no more or less of a gamble, for example.

No, we don't have the back up players. Nobody that is at his level. I've heard people talking about Belotti alot and basically, he's just not good enough. There is a reason he has spent so long at Torino and why clubs are not rushing to sign him now.

There's only one United!
And United had declined to buy him for 3million in 2019

48 m wow !! Would rather take Toney or any proven strikers at that price.

I'm all for signing potentials but that's not what we want now. We need a forward to come in and start doing the job immediately.
How is Toney proven exactly? You could have chosen anyone and you went with someone in the lowest 18th percentile of strikers on non penalty xG.

When players are so tall they can look a bit unusual with their running style, but for someone so big he’s certainly very good at keeping the ball close to him when dribbling. His close control is good enough to develop into a top player.

It's all about perceptions though and I did mention like "Toney".

In any case, just to justify my point (Source is Athletic)

His expected goals (xG) number of 12.63 was the fourth-highest among forwards in the division. He also managed the second-highest expected assists (xA) figure for his position, 8.38

In hindsight it always appears bad but I often find these are just sensationalist headlines. The truth is we’ve probably turned down the opportunity to sign about 100 players since 2019 behind the scenes. But the only ones that make the headlines are those that actually develop into top players, then the stories about how we missed out on him come up.

With young players it’s always hit n miss and a gamble. When we bought Pellestri and Amad, if we didn’t sign them and they went on the be world beaters we’d be hearing how we turned them down. Likewise with signing Garnacho. He looks like one that will hopefully pay off.

I remember when Arsene Wenger had an incredible world class team of players that he “nearly” signed.

Too cheap = rubbish.
.......and here we are two days from the start of the new season having lost 6 players, sold Pereira, loaned Telles Henderson and bought Malacia and got Eriksen on a free. Martinez is the only one costing a good sum of money.

We've regressed since last year.
EtH seems to be a manager who knows his stuff but the owners did not help him.

Same old story.

And now let’s see how he does second time round. Remember Pukki? He scored 11 goals in his first season. One less than Toney in a much worse Norwich team that got relegated.

Let's hope the Martial injury makes the board realize we desperately need another striker

I dont know why you keep bringing up Pukki. ( guess this is the second or third time). I was ignoring it since it was a very stupid comparison. My point has been simple from the beginning - if we can't get a better option than a 18 year old kid from Austrian league for the reported money, then we are in major trouble. It just shows how clueless we are when it comes to planning.

I’d be very worried about our board if it takes them a Martial injury to realise we desperately need a striker.

It’s 2nd time I’ve brought it up. You avoided the question about 5 times. Just saying.

It’s a very relevant point as they both had a great first season in the premier league and were the same level of “proven” and performed very similarly statistically. The point being the jury is still out on Toney to do the same in his second season. Going from Brentford to Utd is just as big gamble if we are looking to pay £60m for him. That’s more outrageous than spending 40m on a promising youngster.

I wonder if this is somebody from ten Hag's Ajax transfer target list?
Possibly. It does match the kind of profile ETH would like as striker. A physical presence similar to Haller at Ajax.
