The only thing I’m certain of in this whole saga is that Utd will not come out and brief they are no longer trying to sign FDJ. They are already getting some serious heat from fans, they’ll start a riot if they do that.

If he comes or not, they’ll continue to brief we’re still after him or just stay quiet.

I still think we're the most likely destination, but there's also a good chance he stays at Barca (god knows why he'd want that after how they've acted).

I don't believe the Chelsea rumours at all. Their net spend is already approx £160m - Fofana will be another £80m apparanetly and they still need a number 9 before getting a midfielder. If they get De Jong thats somewhere in the region of £300m net spend. Barcalona also want their money up front, no spreading payments.

My best freind is a Chelsea season ticket holder, and he doesn't understand their interest in De Jong
I am struggling to see why he would want to stay there to be honest. None of it quite adds up.. if he did love the club as everyone says he does and it’s his dream club why would he not be willing to drop his wages like Pique and Busquets seem to be doing. I do think him and his agent are playing a game of trying to get both a move and his wages owed to him.

And yeah I don’t get why Chelsea would be in for him.. like you said they’re in for Fofana and I still think they’ll be looking for a number 9 ie Aubameyang.

Still hope it goes through just worrying that it’s gone a bit quiet for the last few weeks.
I think he'll leave, yes. Barca desperately want him gone, because they need the money. All public utterances to the contrary are pure drivel. The process of forcing him out has begun and he can expect many more threats of legal action and games on the bench / at CB until he leaves.

The question is, when he does leave, where does he go? Chelsea appear to have the upper hand there (UCL football and London reportedly favoured by De Jong over Europa League football and Manchester) and I think they'll get him eventually.
Barca definitely want him gone.. but playing the ‘illegal contract’ card seems to have complicated it even further.. whether that works in favour of him leaving or not I don’t know. It does need to get a move on though as Barca have their first league game Saturday and still can’t register new signings.. hopefully we get some progress this week!

Just to get another perspective.
Werner joint RB Leipzig and will make 10m Euro a year. That's 6m Euro less than he got at Chelsea. He still had 3 years of contract, so he waived 18m Euro to join Leipzig.

If FdJ was really serious, the 17m Euro shouldn't hold up the deal that long.
But the 17m for FDJ isn't what he's due to earn, it's what he's already worked for.

If you're simplifying it like that, I'd say it's more:

United: Is FDJ for sale?
Agent: Actually there are a load of problems at Barca and we are considering our options so yes, possibly.
United: Oh? Well in the event he does leave, we just signed up EtH and he wants to build the team around Frenkie.
Agent: Sounds interesting... hold on... * covers the reciever with his hand and shouts at someone in Dutch * ... * muffled response from another room * ... Frenkie says that sounds like a great idea. If he has to leave Barca he would love to come to United. For the right price of course.
United: Of course. Rest assured we value Frenkie very highly. We can talk numbers soon but I don't think there will be a problem. Tell us more about these problems at Barca...
Agent: Well, you are not going to believe this shit...

The next day...

United: Oh, err, hola, is that Barca?
Barca: Maybe... who is this?
United: It's United. We, err, we just wondered if you had any good players for sale? Someone like, ohhhhh I dunno * snigger * FDJ maybe?
Barca: Okay, thank god... we didnt recognise the number and thought you might be someone else. FDJ you say? We like Frenkie but maybe at the right price.
United: Ok, that makes sense.

Negotiate. Price agreed.

Barca: You want Depay too?
United: No, thanks.
Barca: How about Braithwaite? We give you great deal on Braithwaite if you take him too.
United: No.
Barca: 49% stake in Barcelona's Wedding and Bar Mitzvah Holdings for the next 40 years?
United: ...

Can imagine the muppets will be joining in but slightly changing the lyrics form Rangers to Man Utd with the following after reading that tweet:

If I heard this without looking at the video I would have thought it's Barney singing.

It's just that at no other club would FDJ's alternative be Rabiot, and Sancho's Pellistri and Amad. The dip in quality is so severe that you can't help but think they are unrelated signings.
Rabiot isn’t a like for like player to FDJ. But it’s such a Utd thing to make him the alternative.

Remember when we went from Fabregas, Thiago profile to then getting Fellani.

If we are signing Rabiot to play further forward in a number 8 position then that’s very worrying because he’s crap there. The only other position he would play is as a 6 which makes him a FDJ alternative.

Little stupid that mate. Romero is a GK. Rabiot and FDJ both midfielders. Thought I’d help you out.
Thanks mate, appreciate your help on this, clearly I was being sensationalist. Point is our alternative to a deep lying playmaker who does his best work at no6 role is to get a b2b player who has played on the wings of late and prefers to carry the ball and does most of his work between 8/10 (What I believe Scott & Fred prefer) is not an alternative.

We are being linked with a bid for SMS as well as rabiot. If we are genuinely going for SMS then it rules out any FDJ signing.

Even if we are just showing interest or are actually bidding for SMS, it tells me a lot about the lack of confidence Utd now have in the FDJ deal happening.

Rabiot is going to play as a 6 or an 8. As an 8 he’s very underwhelming. As a 6 is the only viable position for him in our team. Or as a double pivot. Either way it’s in the same zone FDJ would operate.

I’m just not convinced rabiot is a signing to be made alongside FDJ. We’ve been peddled these lies before.

I think a lot of fans feel the saga has been embarrassing to the club and want us to pull the plug, move on to other targets. At least that what i see on reddit and Facebook. I don't know about twitter though as twitter is the most toxic.

We're caught in a trap
I can't walk out
Because I love you too much, frenkie
Why can't you see
What you're doing to me
When they dont believe a word you say?
We can't go on together
With suspicious minds (suspicious minds)
And we can't build our dreams
On suspicious minds
So if an old friend I know (Chelsea)
Stops by to say hello
Would I still see suspicion in your eyes?
Here we go again
Asking where I've been
You can't see the tears are real, I'm crying
(Yes I'm crying)
We can't go on together
With suspicious minds (suspicious minds)
And we can't build our dreams
On suspicious minds

My confidence in the FDJ saga weakened mainly from ETH’s post match interview. I thought it was quite telling. You could see he was frustrated and angry. When asked about needing new players, he was flustered. You could see he wanted to say more but had to restrict what he could say. It didn’t give me the air of confidence of someone who’s got strong assurances the FDJ deal is going to happen. It’s criminal he’s having to do an interview after our first game of season saying we still need more players.

It just had the air of frustration we’ve seen with previous managers and summer transfer windows.

"Growing realisation that Frenkie De Jong just does not want to join, Barca want De Jong to sign a new deal on reduced terms, expected his future will be sorted this week"

We got Glazered, this was a ploy wasn't it, so they didn't have to spend any money than necessary during those 12 weeks.

Genuinely can't come up with any other reasoning i just can't its too much incompetence we all knew this in June. It would also explain the panicking after the game as well, they didn't think the squad was this bad which is its own issue.

But they weren't alternatives to Sancho.
They were never going to be brought into the team like Sancho would have. But it certainly felt like “these are better than nothing signings” to appease the manager and fans.

Why do you refuse to see that FDJ is just playing his hand as it was dealt. He is maintaining he wants to stay to get his money. There should be no doubt he will leave Barca before September.
Love the optimism, worry about the delusion.

In regards to my response, we are just not an attractive landing spot currently. He ain’t coming here unfortunately.

We know the transfer is full of complications.

But I no longer believe the only hold up is £17m owed to him. If that was the case, Utd would have paid it by now. The fact we are spending money on players we never wanted at the start of the window shows desperation. Our desperation would have made us pay the extra fee to cover the wages issue.

17m is peanuts for the real big clubs these days (not Barsa for obvious reasons). I'm sure if he said to United that he wants to come here we could maybe give it to him as a signing bonus of sorts.

Maybe it's a matter of principle for him? Is there some Mediterranean wife that absolutely doesn't want to give up the Barcelona lifestyle/sunshine to come to Manchester? Baffling. They clearly don't want him and need the money.

If FDJ does stay, I’d begin to question his desire to actually want to play football at the top level. He’ll be a bit part player this season and going forward even after busquets leaves as Xavi has already said he doesn’t like FDJ in the CDM position.

I get he has the right to get any money he’s owed. But what is his end game?
