Ole’s legacy as you put it is a squad that finished 3rd and 2nd in consecutive seasons. If the following manager cannot get a tune out of them then it is in no way a blot on his legacy. It’s like saying moyes finishing 7th is somehow fergie’s fault as he left him a shite squad.
You mean 3rd with 66 points and 2nd with 74 points while not winning any trophies at all in the long run.

We never learn.

We've given yet another manager way too much power in the transfer market and it's likely the reason for our shit-show of a window thus far.

Murtough should be fired for his incompetence since he took over.

Get an actual DOF with some backbone in.

Tell ETH his only job is to coach the squad. Stop having him suggest players we should sign.

It concerns me that ETH has walked in and seemingly hasnt watched a United game in the last three seasons.

If he thought he could turn a team containing the likes of De Gea, Fred, McTominay, Rashford and Dalot into a "progressive" football team then I seriously question his judgement.

I have backed every manager we appointed and I refuse to blame them for the mess we're in but I cant believe ETH is so badly prepared for the job

Mate they were pathetic seasons with zero fans, unprecedented times. can you remind me what we actually won? Did we close the gap on the title? Were we ever close? And in his 3rd season when he’d had time to fully “Ole style” the team, what happened?
Mate there might have been no fans but the same was true for all players of all teams. The conditions were same for all teams. Also in his third season he should have won the league or a cup with his squad but now we cannot buy a win and no one is supposed to say anything??? The mental gymnastics are worthy of a gold medal.

Correct...but I dread to think who the club would have signed if not for ETHs suggestions

What's the reason then?

There's reports ETH came in and scrapped the shortlist of players from the scouting department.

He wanted Lisandro Martinez and not Pau Torres.

He's spearheading the De Jong chase.

If Murtough is the reason, he should be fired regardless.

If you think the Glazers aren't ponying up the money, that's another argument, but our problem hasn't been spending money(despite their obvious flaws regardless).

The problem is that every united fan could of told you that. We could have all also told you who needs to go ASAP. So why did he not take the advice of people like ralf who have been at the club? Anyone could tell you maguire can't play high line and de gea can't pass out.

From "we need only the right players" to "WE NEED PLAYERS FFS ANYONE WILL DO" in the space of a week.

This is what happens when you dont watch the games from last season and when John Murtough the psuedo football director fails to realise that a pack of shite leopards wont change their shitty spots.
Really worrying that he trusted these players and the amateurs running the club.

We should’ve got conte. Shaw, Maguire, Varane, Wan Bissaka and another CB of his choosing would be solid and barely let goals in.
Plus he’s a winner, we’d have got Richarlison and a combative DM and glided to 4th

We know the club has not got the signings he wanted in.
Its not his fault the club does not have the right people in recruitment. That problem existed before he arrived.

Absolute sad state of affairs when a club like Spurs have Paratici & Conte while we have Richy Arnold and Murtough.

There are no football people at the club making decisions or are just not capable of making one. Who allowed utd to even bid for Arnautovic? Nobody wants to take any responsibility. Clearly they put everything on the manager who has no knowledge of market outside Holland.

We will always appoint inexperienced people who are learning on their job.

What has absolute points got anything to do with it. If 66 points gets us 3rd place then there are 17 other teams worse of than us and we have done well to finish better than them. The league is a reflection of how we have done in the whole season compared to other teams. And it doesn’t lie.

Who else did he want? All 3 players signed thus far are players he wanted.

I don't know if the shortlist was a good one, but it's ignoring the obvious problem.

We should never give a manager this much say in the transfer window. It's destroying us time and time again.

If Murtough and our bunch were in charge of Liverpool, they would have buckled down to Klopp and signed Brandt instead of Salah back in 2017.

By all accounts, ETH seemingly was a fan of Arnautovic.

And the thing is bold is precisely the problem. It seems like ETH has too much say in who we go for.

I thought we were hiring him to just coach the squad. Why have we hired him to be part DOF/full-time coach at the same time?

It’s too soon to say any of his transfers were wrong.
Individually they might come good but he's targeted the wrong areas of improvement. We didn't need another CB or LB. We needed a DM, CM, RB, CF and RF. We all knew this. Ralf knew this. EtH is, seemingly, the only person in the northern hemisphere who didn't know this.

You're saying a lot of contradictory points it's ridiculous. Ok then, Mourinho's legacy is a squad who won 2 cups and finished 2nd with 81 points, so you can't say Ole inherited a shit squad either if by your logic Ole's legacy is good because he finished 2nd and 3rd.

We're talking what he left for the next manager. Either you reply directly to the question or there's no point of this lame discussion.

Right? I kept saying Martinez was a ridiculous purchase at that price and was promptly told he was going to transform the way we play with his lovely left foot. That worked out well without any new midfielders in front of him didn’t it?

It’s unbelievable that Varane has been sat on our bench the last two games while we played McFred and a #10 in midfield. Jesus wept.

The guy that spent 300m to assemble this shite?
The lineup was
De Gea - signed under SAF
Dalot - signed under Mourinho
Maguire - signed under Ole
Martinez - signed under ETH
Shaw - signed under van Gaal
Eriksen - signed under ETH
Fred - signed under Mourinho
Sancho - signed under Ole
Fernandes - signed under Ole
Rashford - youth player
Ronaldo - signed under Ole, hardly "his" signing

Hardly "his" team.

Why the feck have we waited until we've played 2 games and been spanked in each, until we have come to this conclusion?! ETH really needs to learn and quickly.
It’s like when you’re thinking of buying a new car and the price is overwhelming, you think you can carry on for a few more years and miles. Then suddenly a push rod bursts through your hood, the engine is engulfed in flames, and you realize you’re sitting on blocks in your driveway. The price of a new car seems more reasonable.

AWB is not a wingback, not in a 100 years. Maybe he’d do ok as an RCB but I’ve seen him positionally lost on aerial fuels to make me think that wouldn’t work either.

A big headache and dare I say embarrassing start to the season for ETH. The realisation of what he’s signed himself up for is becoming apparent.

Confidence must already be in the rock bottom stages just two games into the season which isn’t going to help matters. Bottom of the table with -5 GD sees us fighting it out in basement duals.

I can see us taking a third loss against Liverpool unfortunately, they’ll be eager to twist the knife.

Ole inherited a decent squad and made it better using his coaching and man management. That others that have followed him haven’t been able to do the same and kick on isn’t due a blot on ole. Like i said its like saying fergie’s legacy is tarnished because moyes couldn’t do any better than 7th with the squad he left him.

You're missing the point.

I think Murtough should be fired.

He's been a complete disaster since he took over and this summer is the final nail in the coffin.

But we need to get in an actual DOF and have him + the recruiting department mainly work on incomings/outgoings.

ETH should have some input, but not the entire input.

If the club thought ETH would be excellent as a DOF-type, we are absolutely more clueless than I thought and anyone who thought so should all get fired.

Don't like how he went on and wasted that much on Martinez. Quite frankly it was utterly daft. And the fact that he then goes on to pair him with Harry is an absolute crime.

If find it bizzare that people are arguing that a CB signing wasn't needed in a context where Lindelof is already out injured, Varane is on a personal training plan to recover his own fitness and we've just watched a game where even with the addition of Martinez' strengths and weaknesses our inability to play out from the back and deal with the opposition press was still way more costly a problem than our ability to deal with aerial threats.

I think it's pretty bloody obvious why Martinez was needed. The problem is that he was needed along with about five other players.

The table doesn't lie but it also doesn't tell the full story though. That 2nd place season was during the lockdowns which seems to have taken off the pressure these players seem incapable of tolerating. And the previous season - which was the Bruno miracle season - we had leeway in that we weren't expected to dig up any trees as we kept hearing that Ole was tasked with resetting the culture of the club and it would take 3 years for us to be challenging for (not winning) the league. In both those seasons we were a counter attacking team with no other string to our bow. We played underdog football.

Mourinho who people love to shit on here at least managed to crack the 80 points and went on to say that it was a major achievement - regardless of how much he loves to compliment himself, it's not wrong now that we're witness to the worst United team in the Premier League era, while also being one of the the best paid team in the world.

Nothing against ETH, I do think if backed he could build a good squad at Utd.

However, we should have got Conte when he was available. Positive he’d have sorted this dross.

Our centre backs have an impossible job. You'll see plenty of feck ups from them this season for various reasons but its mostly because they have a never ending parade of attacks to deal with. They'll do a good job and cut out 5 dangerous attacks and be crucified for being 2nd best the 6th time and that'll be in the first 10 minutes.
They'll be pushed up to the half way line with De Gea cemented to his goal line and if they're lucky they'll have support from Fred when the attack breaks down. Wan Bisakka will be jogging back, Shaw will be in no mans land, the rest of the team dont defend, its beneath them. Shuffle the names around as you please, there isn't much between them.
I used to pedal this line quite a bit & to some extent still agree but I take exception to the do well 5 times fail on the 6th, we’re at the point where the first thing that unsettled them is generally followed by some calamitous error almost immediately.

I agree that any defence that faces an attack as much as ours will have issues but some of the errors we continue to see aren’t even particularly forced but more so self-inflicted.

The only real answer would be to demolish & rebuild but I don’t see that as a plan of action for these lot.

Give peas a chance.
The 'try and convince them to join' is the worrying part for me. It sounds as if we have targets (more than just de Jong) that we're after that don't seem keen at all. Apparently we failed with a late bid to get Werner in?

The lineup was
De Gea - signed under SAF
Dalot - signed under Mourinho, rarely played by Ole
Maguire - signed under Ole
Martinez - signed under ETH
Shaw - signed under van Gaal
Eriksen - signed under ETH
Fred - signed under Mourinho
Sancho - signed under Ole
Fernandes - signed under Ole
Rashford - youth player
Ronaldo - signed under Ole, hardly "his" signing

Hardly "his" team.
You know the problem with this? It still points back to Ole. A number of those are still at the club because Ole's signings intended to replace them turned out to be worse. Whose fault is it AWB and VDB can't displace Dalot and Fred? After 3 years the mediocre players still in the starting lineup are on the manager. He really couldn't find an upgrade on Mctominay or Fred after 3 years and several hundred million?

I don’t think so, mate. 2 relatively cheap players he knows plus a free transfer is anything but giving ETH too much power.
