What should we do? Continue with our current midfield options?
No, we need 1-2 midfielders for sure. But I don't believe that Casemiro was our plan B all along after de Jong. They're not even the same type of player.

We should just switch to the 4-2-3-1 until we get in more suitable players instead of panic buying late in the window. Sticking to the 4-3-3 won't work even with Casemiro, because most of our players are fecking useless.

Ten Hag did play a 4-2-3-1 at Ajax too before switching to the 4-3-3 and it worked very well. Until we have like 4-5 new players that can slot right into a 4-3-3, I don't see why he's persisting with it. We'll see what happens but this is worrying to me, didn't expect us to do this just because of our 2 opening games.

Not exactly when Casemiro can work along with Kroos who less mobile than FdJ, but prefers stationing in area just in front of the backline. Modric drops back a lot too.

Just that with the fee involved, I doubt we have money for another big fee midfielder, now that we need to get an attacker prepping for Ronaldo departure.
We won’t sign both.

Stating the obvious. We aren’t going to buy them both and play one out of position even though they are different types of players. We ain’t buying FDJ to play him ahead of Casemiro. So yeah point still stands.
Its like you just ignored the rest of my point to backup your point.

yeah your points stands, well done.

Think people are focusing on the wrong problem when they talk about his age.

The bigger problem is that we know what qualities ETH was looking for in that deepest midfield position this summer. He's been after FDJ all summer because his priority has been to improve what we do in possession and how we build play from the back.

Instead, we're now trying to get him an entirely different type of player, who has never been known for his strengths in possession or in building play from the back. Rather, he was the member of the Madrid midfield least capable on the ball. So he wouldn't solve the actual possession struggles ETH has been trying to fix, at all.

If ETH isn't working out in a few months this is the sort of signing people would point to and say "but the board backed him, look at the money they spent on the best DM in the world!", even though ETH spent all summer trying to get an entirely different profile of midfielder.
I think you'd struggle to find a DM that is an elite ball winner and can progress the ball as good as Casemiro though, albeit not his strength. We still needed to buy another CM with Frenkie anyway, I feel like we wanted to spend less on the Casemiro role though, looks like we've potentially adjusted that. There's still even a possibility (say it quietly) we get Casemiro and FDJ...

ETH himself said also we will try and get a player in that "connector role" or develop from within, so there's also a chance we see someone like Iqbal developed there, with the safety blanket of Casemiro - some luxury too.

This is a win for all parties involved. Real Madrid have already signed his replacement, Casemiro gets a new challenge and we get the best CDM in the world. This won't be a case of a player who only signs for the money and then loses all his hunger and passion, Casemiro is the type of player that goes 100% into every single game.

His age won't be a problem. We'll get 3 or maybe 4 top quality seasons from him.

He’ll play deep and what’s damning is he’s probably our best dictator of play as well compared to McFred.
He will as things stand, yes. But for people saying it is a waste of money etc, I disagree, ultimately I am sure ETH goal will be to get a partner with the attributes to be able to play deep.

I ignored the rest of your point because it was irrelevant to my point. You identified they both play different roles in the same position. No one asked.

Mm, why? Genuine question.
Restructuring due to COVID. It's not a typical flat contract, instead it was backloaded. He's on 20M for this season because he was on 12M total the previous two(9+3)

By "develop from within" I think he meant Fred, as he subsequently said Fred was performing that connector role. Think we can all imagine how successful a Casmiro/Fred partnership would likely be. Modric or Kroos he ain't.

So this would leave us still needing to sign FDJ or at least needing to sign a midfielder who brings some of the in-possession qualities FDJ would have brought. Except now having blown a massive part of our budget on Casemiro. And I'm not even sure what possession-orientated midfielders we've actually been linked to other than FDJ.

He wants De Jong.

As it stands we can’t get him.

He’s perhaps realised we also need a top DM.

He wants to get Casemiro.

I’m not sure what your point is? Plans change and adapt.

You know Casemiro and Fred play together for Brazil?

And we also have Eriksen?

People need to get away from wanting everything fixed in one window. It’s a rebuild and it will take time. If he can’t get the right DLP in this summer let’s look at something else that needs fixing and revisit the former when we can get who/what we need.

This feels incredibly short sighted - have we learnt nothing.
We almost certainly wont get top 4 this year (even with Casemiro) so why sign an aging star on huge wages when we could buy a genuine prospect elsewhere
He's 30 could easily play 3-5 years of football. Modric is 35, Benzema is 34, Busquets is 34.

You would have said no to Modric, 4 years ago because he's old and washed up.

His age is of no concern to me. 30 these days can mean 6 or 7 more years. Fernandinho was 28 when City signed him. Thiago was almost 30 when Pool signed him.

He is exactly the profile of player we have been crying out for in this team for a long time. Whether he can adapt to PL is another question but I wouldn't give his age a 2nd thought.

Or maybe because ETH underestimated the physicality of the PL and overestimated our lightweight midfield so we're now going for a proper DM.

Spot on. Been saying that throughout the thread.
The youth fetish in the Caf is real. We're at the bottom of the table lads, we need experienced players. We cannot ask a 21 year to patrol the huge gap we have in front of our defenders. Casemiro makes Maguire and Varane better.

I'd take him in a heart beat. I don't believe he wants to come.
He's won everything in that league and with that club. So, there isn't a particular reason to stay either, apart from security and stability, which aren't guaranteed with the arrival of Tchouameni and Camavinga.

That price is eye watering for a 30 year old, but we’ve got no leverage at all. Fair play to Madrid for sorting out their midfield for the next 10 years and still being able to demand this kind of income from the older players leaving.

He's looked at our opening games where our biggest issue was what we did in possession and thought "I was wrong to prioritise what we do in possession, I should spend all that money on a different type of player instead"? I very much doubt it.

This sudden change in the profile of player we're targeting fits entirely with the pattern of our haphazard recruitment over the last decade, as indeed does this summer window in its entirety. I have no idea why anyone would ignore the same red flags we've seen over and over again and give our recruitment the benefit of the doubt by saying "well maybe ETH just changed his mind about what he wants a few weeks before the window closes".

Fred is good but I don’t trust him in midfield passing, which would be important in our new possession play.
Fred would be playing in his natural role ie that of box to box. The problem would not be Fred but Bruno. Can Bruno play in the role of an advanced playmaker? Does he have the passing range for it?

This. Coaches don't wake up in the morning deciding that they'll totally change their plan because they can't get their primary target (I'm not conviced the Casemiro case is independant from De Jong's and still believe Ten Hag wanted to use De Jong as his deepest midfielder). They usually try to find a similar profile they can get.

What worries me about Casemiro isn't his age, 30 yo is fine if you get a player that improves you massively. His main issue is consistency. Obviously, few people here watch La Liga every week but if Casemiro is often amazing in the CL, his consistency in championship games isn't great, especially for the past 2 years.

Does United need a great player that will step up in big CL games or does it need an experienced and consistent player that can help them stabilize their midfield? I'll let people here answer but I know where I stand.

If Casemiro is signed, I can understand why Garner would want to leave to get more playing time, but as of now, this is just pure speculation. Would be such an upgrade though.

Casemiro is a very good player but he is not worth the reported fee. United lacks mobile technical midfield player and I think Casemiro will be exposed if you combine him with current United's midfielders.

Another aging player like matic. We still haven't learned
Don't think it's the same situation at all. Casemiro is at his prime, and playing in a position where players tend to last longer (no pun intended). Also our current situation requires players ready to contribute. It'd be a big win for us to be honest. He's one of the best players in the world in that position.

Casemiro + Fred + VDB/Bruno/Eriksen is the best of the lot
I think we might actually see a balanced 4-2-3-1 just with Casemiro. Is he atleast as good as Fabinho at playing out the back?
