You think Martinelli has shown more than Antony so far?

Martinelli has torched that many defenders so far. Add Fofana to the long list. Already demonstrating serious potential in the premier league. Antony would come to the Premier League and have it all to prove. Martinelli is already on the trajectory

remember when we were celebrating a change in ideas and "walking away from obviously stupid fees and deals."

100m for this bloke and it is very likely that Ajax sat around and thought "what figure could we brief that just ends this so we can focus on pre-season". We rightly pulled back after they briefed that figure and now because panic/hysteria has set in for Arnold and Murtough, here we are. I'd laugh if I wasn't already crying. We are acting like complete clowns in this window.

Agreed. Also, 100m as a transfer fee for Antony creates a elf fulfilling prophecy. 100m was spent on him so he must be good.

Is he really a 100m player or is this is a nosebleed reaction to the opening two results? If Ronaldo was 10 years younger would you be bidding 100m? I dont think so.

If Ronaldo was 10 years younger his price tag would have been 200 million +

Hope its a red herring. Laughing stock if we pay a 100million regardless of currency for Antony.

I sure hope so. And I even rate him a lot. I'd be willing to accept an €80M deal if we had sold Rashford to PSG. But we haven't sold anyone. And a €100M for Antony is borderline criminal regardless of circumstances. I feel like an investigation should be launched. Possible misappropriation of funds or something. It's so outlandish. It has to be fake.

We are clearly buying for his potential, its a very big risk move at this point. If he turns out to be worldclass winger, fine, we will have a world class winger for next 7-10 years, and could turn out be a good investment. If he ends up to be another Rashford or Pepe, then may the football god saves us.

What on earth?

We paid £80m for Harry Maguire. Honestly, at that point, all bets were off on United’s transfer fees. With that as the benchmark, how can you possibly justify any low or high fees for players? It’s all out the window.
We spent 2 years negotiating for Sancho to get the price down to a somewhat reasonable level and we've just chucked silly money straight back out there for most players we've bid for this summer. I've given up any hope of us becoming shrewd negotiators until there's a change of ownership, even then it might be too late to undo the damage. These transfer fees are inherently linked to having owners who don't care enough to put a proper recruitment team in place.

That's an absolutely bizarre example. Ten years ago, in the 2011/12 season, Ronaldo scored 60 goals in 55 games for Real Madrid. He'd be near enough priceless - and €100m would be daylight fecking robbery.

Not to mention the bloke actually went for €94m in 2009! And then Juve paid €100m for him in 2018.

Got nothing to do with the negotiation team, the selling club decide the price. If they don’t want to sell, they don’t want to sell.

It’s like people expect us to bid under the asking price and expect us to low ball them & have them bend over and let us walk all over them. It doesn’t work like that.

I’m sure there’s a middle ground to work to & that’s how negotiations work but 9/10 the selling club will get what they want through add ons etc etc

It’s so late in the window prices are gonna get a lil expensive but you can blame EtH pushing for FDJ for too long before focusing on other players for that.

Or maybe they could have tried to sort things out earlier and not 2 weeks before deadline day when the prices are sky high.

Look where the moaning of "backing the manager" lead to. I fear EtH to be too arrogant and even those 2 embarassing games still underestimating the Premier league. 100 millions for Antony is not a gamble, it is a disgrace. Stop with helping ajax here - Lisandro is more than enough. For half the price Diaby can be taken, who is twice the player Antony is.

Martinelli has been pretty good. Great potential. If Antony plays on a similar level in the PL I'll be happy. But with that absurd price tag people would be expecting a lot more which is one of the reason why I think we should pull out.

If you've got a solid recruitment team they will be able to identify a group of players who suit the needs of the team and work their way down the list. That's how it works at most clubs. If a team is being obstinate in their valuation of player A, move onto player B. Our player B seems to be Gakpo, a completely different profile of player who doesn't even play the same position. Everything is back to front and when that's the case, you get taken to the cleaners because you just end up paying whatever price the first club quotes you.

You can maybe attribute some blame to ten Hag for the midfield, but even then I think that's slightly harsh because most managers are probably used to working with a more efficient recruitment team. He wanted de Jong and seemingly had no alternatives - which is again why we've landed on another player who plays nothing like the first with Casemiro. The funds should've been there to sort the rest of the team irrespective of de Jong, though. Why are we only bidding for Antony this late in the window if the money was there to do both deals all along? None of it makes sense.

This is Joel Glazer panicking after the pressure that's been put on him. I really like the player and would love to see him join us.

But it does seem like more money has been made available after the pressure put on the owners after the first two defeats. How the Casemiro deal got done quickly is a reflection of the pressure the owners are under imo, and they're are trying to maintain their asset.

This is crazy money. History has shown that the majority of top players that come in from that league are not half as good as they look. It's not that hard to look good playing for one of the top two in the Eredivisie against any of the rest who are realistically just cannon fodder. I think it would be absolute madness to pay even half of what Ajax seem to want.

No we would be bidding 200+ with a host of other big clubs contending and in the end he would be at PSG for 250 million. Wtf is this even. Bizarre.

Why can't we go for both Gapko and Antony? There's a 60m euros offer from PSG for Saint Rashford. Let's cash in before everyone notices that his heart is not in football anymore.

Fixed.

I honestly believe they’re looking to sell the club by the end of the season & all this investment in players is to try & prop up the price of the club. That being said though, playing staff will do square root of feck all when stadium rebuilt or renovations & training ground investment is what is going to cost the most for any new owner. (Besides the cost of the actual club of course)

Find it funny that posters who have barely watched him or have no idea about how to value a player are adamant about what a player is worth.

Richarlison I'd happily pay that fee for. Very talented.

Raphina.. I'm not sure. He was good for Leeds but it remains to be seen how good he is for a top team. For £50m I might take the gamble.

Antony is even more risky, plays in a league where the defending is genuinely horrible and doesn't even put up good figures there. Ajax want 80m euros for him and that's way too much, fair value for the risk I'd say is around £40m.

It's not necessarily comparing to what other players went for but considering the player and all the relevant bits of info regarding that player.

Raphinha is 10x better than Richarlison

Surely if we've suddenly decided we have 100m euros to spend on an attacker we can find some with a better pedigree from one of the larger leagues.

Whilst Anthony looks good in YT compilations playing against EPL defenders week in week out is a completely different ballgame.

Need to get ETH to look beyond his nose. Whilst Martinez will likely end up being a great addition he's hardly set the world alight in his first two games, he's swapped one problem for another in our defence and there is no doubt we've overpaid by like 30% on him.

What is your formula then for a player that looks really good in the best team in a league that is ranked seven in Europe?

80 million including add ons would be fair. Not 100 million!

No it wouldn't. He's done nothing to merit even 80m. He's had one decent season in the Dutch League.

It's absolutely outrageous money. No other club in the world would pay more than 45/50m for him except us.

Can tell he is coming, and we are going to break the bank to sign him.
