When we signed Martinez I thought Varane is the ideal partner, a calm head just like he did alongside Ramos.

He had a few performances like that last season, but certainly didn't do it consistently (even taking into account the injuries). Hopefully this will be the start of him putting a run together of consistent good performances.

Noticed how Salah at one point just let a ball go out to a corner kick when I could have easily picked it up in a fairly decent position and challenge Varane 1vs1.
Felt like if it was Maguire he was facing he would have likely have gone at him.

Really hope he can stay fit. He was imperious tonight and having the likes of him and Casemiro in the team is so important to getting us going again.
Great performance and he also shows great attitude, it was like he brought his winning mentality from Madrid tonight. Still suspect under pressure, but having Martinez and Casemiro around should help with that.
