There's an interesting conversation to be had about writing off a season so we can rebuild properly instead of throwing ridiculous amounts of money around and trying to win something this very season.

If we planned this whole FdJ thing a bit better, we wouldn't be in this situation and yet here we are.

One thing to think about is to have the right age profiles in the squad so the squad peaks at the right time. If we have Casemiro, Bruno playing at their peaks now, Ronaldo in a decline and Sancho / Antony peaking in a few years, is that the composition we want to have?
We've wrote off the past 8+ seasons. We are a shockingly run club with a very poor recruitment strategy. Another year out of CL and finishing 10th won't attract better players next summer. We have to reverse the tide and right now that means throwing cash (we prob don't even have) at the problem in the hope this manager can somehow finish top 4. We'll be in a much stronger position and much more attractive to every prospect if we do, not before.

The alleged importance of having worked for ETH that makes it worth overspending on Anthony by about 30m. That's fecking insane. How many goals/assists expecting from him in his first season, if you think it's that important?

My alternative is, just don't sign anyone. feck it, just use this £80m and sign another CM and/or RB. If that doesn't materialise, just wait until next summer.

In a sellers market, you have to be opportunistic and not be set in your ways. It's stupid, because you'll keep on getting rinsed year after year. I'm hoping by next summer or even January there is a more obvious target for the RW position who's much better value for money. Until then play the guy we spent £70m on last summer for the same damn position.
Great post, agree with everything.

And comparing any young player like Ronaldo is always a losing proposition. Its a bit like bringing up a Hitler reference in a political debate. The moment you do it, you lose immediately.
Yeah it's setting yourself up for disappointment. I think Antony could be sensational mind you. He has all the talent and the required cuntishness to make it at the top. The last Eredivisie player who went on to be an absolute success in the premier league was a cheating cnut as well, so that bodes well. :wenger:

There are some proper miserable sods on here. This clubs history is littered with exciting, skillful players, but nah, feck that, we should spend £30m on some mediocre winger instead because playing the online accountant is so much more fun
Spot on, they are also asking to bring Depay and Zaha back to give them another try. I honestly think they are just trolls from other clubs.

Exactly. Not sure how many times I've heard on here that we've to just write off seasons to somehow benefit us long term  what's the fecking point.

Should have walked away ages ago, just like we should have for Martinez. Both players will have to do incredibly well to justify their fees. Odds are, they won’t, even if they are both obviously decent.

I have no idea either, yet.
Ajax really are a joke. That bid is more than acceptable.
United are a joke who pay what the selling club wants, always.

This high level of debate and insight is what makes these boards great. Too much commentary is just silly hot takes. This insightful dialectic really gets to the essence of the transfer deal.

'Of'course he's overrated, let's just all agree to pay 85 million pounds for him!' is a logic that is just beyond me.
I can see that. However, being cautious means we never catch up to City, and if we don't do it now, when? If we don't start competing now, and building a team that can play this ETH system and win things, we will never catch up. It doesn't get cheaper the longer we wait; prices will continue going up.

Leicester refuses to sell injury prone Fofana for £70 M, Newcastle signs the guy who scored 6 goals last season in La Liga for £60 M, £60 M quoted for Gordon (who?).

Meanwhile, Caf worry about £84 M paid for their Manager’s most important player.

Anthony is the best left footed winger available right now. Having a leftie on the right flank is important for Ten Hag.

So what are you expecting if we get Antony this summer then? Title challenge I'm guessing?

Antony for €100m would destroy the transfer market worse than Neymar for €222m "back then".

So what is the plan here? Why are we waiting on getting an improved bid in?

My feeling is that we want to get the bid in for Gakpo first, after the PSV v Ranges game, telling me he is the first choice, given the lower price.

If that is the case and Anthony does not come to us, then that is really going to put him in a bad spot with Ajax.

I know you say that, but if United wants a left footed right winger.... What exactly are our options? Pedro Neto is one at 50m, though he's coming off of a broken knee cap and predominantly plays LW and isn't as talented.

If we were close to financial instability then I'd understand the concern, but some people are actually obsessed with the cost of transfer fees to the point they'd be happy to have a worse team for the sake of the club saving some money. Who cares if the manager wants him? Walk away and stash the money in the bank safe and secure ready for the Glazer dividends pay day. Absolutely baffling to me quite frankly, as someone who watches football to be entertained. Surely any football fan would want the best players available at the club. Leave the clubs finance team and lawyers to worry about how they're paid for

Easily. Also every club selling players to United know that if we want their player, we pay it. Like with Maguire, AWB, Martinez etc.

Gosh the overreaction. We've seen 70m spunked on the likes of Pepe and Kepa years ago before this inflated summer but no, this one would destroy the market.

Nah, remember United are the club that paid £80m for Harry Maguire. It's the final nail in the coffin for United ever being anything but a joke in the transfermarket though.

Why would you ever not ask a club like United for something insane everytime, knowing they will never ever walk away from a deal?

What other left footed right winger should we get that is cheaper folks? This is a question for the moaners.

Definitely not. But writing off a season after being painfully shite for the past decade is some of the most incredible rubbish ever spouted. Coming minimum 4th should be a big priority and there's a lot of great teams competing for it this season. We'll need all the firepower we can get.

So with Antony, are you sacking ETH next summer if we don't get top 4?

Reckon we'll go all out and sign him and that'll be us done, unless Ronaldo leaves
We’re still searching for a no.2 GK + a RB too. Reckon it’ll be Antony + someone on the cheap for one of those spots. Really wish we got another central midfielder to play beside Casemiro instead though

People in this thread literally talking about Ballon d'Or potential for a bloke who scored 8 goals and 4 assists in the Eredivisie. Ah man, I genuinely hope this deal gets canceled. All the people I spoke to who follow the Dutch league closely think he's massively overrated and don't see any reason why a club like us should want him in the first place, let alone pay this amount of silly money.
He looks good to me. Don’t know who said Ballon d’Or but that’s clearly OTT.

I'm excited that he appears enthused about joining the club. That's the kind of player we've desired. Someone who fights for the badge. Plus ten Hag wants him and will know how to use/develop him over time. Irrespective of the fee, those traits win out.

Getting a player that fits the managers plans is priceless. I’d rather have one player who’s likely to make a real different than two or three who will add to the burgeoning ranks of “meh” we have at the club already.

All well and good with the selective stats during an injury hit season, he has 2 goals and 2 assists in 3 games so far this season.

Are people forgetting also about the 100M for Lukaku? And how he didn't work out for Chelsea?

You can add in that statistically, near enough every transfer of this fee level and above in the PL has been close to a flop. Odds are not in Antony’s favour
