Telles would have conceded at least one penalty today. At least Malacia chose not to tackle him when Saka got past him in the box. Not sure what Shaw would have done tbh.
That just sums up Shaw and the problem with relying on him. When he's focused and on it he's pocketed some great players and you would easily back him to do the same to Saka. But you cant rely on that version showing up.

We should not be renewing his contract, but it seems insane we might be letting him go on a free given his ability.

My worry about Thursday night is we will be playing AwB, Lindleof,Maguire and Shaw all out of favour/form/fitness.

The attitude he shows on Thursday will tell a lot about him.

Yes, after seeing the main lineup playing and how they're playing players who are subs at the moment cant go out there and not give their all. They shouldn't cause it would send a completely wrong message to ETH.

Shaw was at faul for many goals we have conceeded in last year or so, I like how he is all of a sudden savior for some people

The type of goal we conceeded last night Shaw and Maguire conceeded regulary in pretty much every game they've played together. Shaw regulary allowed crosses from his side, and was regulary out of position for goals we conceeded, but somehow that is forgotten.

Yes, both of them have been absolutely terrible since the Euros. Literally 2/10 stuff most of the time. They should be leaders on and off the pitch at this club by now. They are the exact opposite, topping it off with mistakes and being unfit for large periods.

Looking forward to seeing Shaw on Thursday.

The players coming in need to show the desire the first 11 have shown in the last few games. Dalot, Varane, Martinez and Malacia just love defending now. They celebrate winning a tackle like strikers celebrate goals and I love it.

After seeing Martinez go off and the effects Maguire had on the defence I’m wondering if it’s worth throwing Shaw in at Left CB on Thursday and seeing if there’s something there to work on to be Martinez back up

Yeah it is a concern, but they'll just be digging their own United graves even further. If their mentality, at this point, is just to give up rather and stink up the place as opposed to showing some fight and desire, we don't need them around anyway. I'm hoping for the latter, of course.

I think this might actually be a good thing for Shaw in the long run. With the correct motivation Shaw can be a great player. He's rightly out of the team at the moment but technically he is still a very good player and can progress the ball well.

Legitimate competition for his place might give Shaw the fight he's been lacking for the last 12 months. The season before last he was excellent, and he carried that form into the Euros for England. He just needs to rediscover that.
A worry to have a player like this though. Its annoying when players need to be motivated from external sources. I understand if confidence is down, but thats a whole different thing.

At a push Shaw has had a season and a half of being really good. When you realise this is his 9th season for us (hes one away from a testimonial ), you do think, has this been a success? I understand a season or two can be written off due to that horrible injury. (but hes had areally good season since). The drop off is a major concern. But as others have said, lets see how he performs when hes next in the team.

Agreed. These are his prime years and now he really should be delivering.

Shaw's one of a few who I would be happy to trust the manager's judgement on - if he's not up to standard, he can go.

He had a superb season a couple of years ago, but post World cup just seemed to drop off a cliff.
For the first time in his career here he really has it all to do to stay.

I'm relaxed about it. If he fights back strongly, it's for our benefit.
If he doesn't, we'll see him out the door.
A proper run club would have gotten rid of him long time ago so i am not sure why so many people still insist to give him chance , it's probably the same people who wrote Dalot off after few matches. If you all forgot, we got rid the likes of Diego Forlan and Juan Sebastian Veron less than 3 years and they both were 10x the footballer Shaw is. VdB is the one who deserve chance ,not this useless fat lump who has been here stinking the place around for 8 years

Many would be taking egg on the face when he'll be the mainstay at that leftback position. He's miles ahead of Malacia it's not even debatable.

Can't wait him to replace Malacia, the only obvious weakness in the defense.
And that's what's irritating about him, he's clearly a vastly more talented player than Malacia but he constantly needs something existential to push him on or his form collapses
You guys must have been his PR , please don't judge player based on their youtube compilation because Shaw having a good game is actually a rare occurrence, even at his best season we conceded +40 goals in the league and most of them came from his side. Some people hyping his Euro performance ( same as how they hyped Maguire ), as if England didn't face many farmers nation worse than average EPL club to get into final. The moment he start playing will be the moment we start losing again. His time here is finished , he isn't going to get any younger nor any faster nor any smarter nor any fitter as footballer , the only thing he will keep on gaining is fat due to worsening metabolism. We should have look to sell him on January transfer window and find someone else to fight for LB place with Malacia. Pandering to bang average player like Luke Shaw won't get us anywhere, better cash in right now before he stuck here like Phil Jones

Shaw was close to a wonderkid when we signed him, and only a horrific injury stalled him.
He had a great season 2 years ago.

So there are some reasons, but as a body of work we're talking about 2 or so good years out of 7.

DVB hasn't shown even the remotest sense that he is more than a run around and pass it 5 yards merchant, so I'd certainly not give him any sway over Shaw though.

I actually heard Shaw was not at practice Wednesday. Here is the quote from M.E.N....

Ten Hag is expected to start Maguire against Real Sociedad on Thursday and it seems Shaw would have started if he had actually trained on Wednesday afternoon.

Can anyone confirm or deny that? Just wondering if he is healthy and will play.

Thank you!!

Totally disagree with this. It is way, way over the top.

No-one can (or would want to) deny that his form has been erratic and, for sure, at times he has been poor. Fine.

Now for the other side of the story. Shaw, when in form, has proved he can be one of the best full backs in the entire world, never mind at this club. Thankfully, instead of binning him, the club is going to try and get him back to his best (from where he can certainly kick on to even greater heights).

If you want to focus on the negatives, have a great time! Just don’t expect all of us to take it lying down.

I think the signing of Malacia will, in time, give us two great LB options. If I’m wrong in a couple of years, what can I say - I’ll apologise then. For now, after an indifferent season, I can accept some criticism but this exaggerated scapegoating is just BS.

He's been here way too long to be given the benefit of the doubt. Mourinho replacing him with Perisic would've been a brilliant move in hindsight.

It doesn't matter what he theoretically can be, if he can't produce it regularly.

It's not. A properly run club with aspirations of winning top trophies wouldn't tolerate the gash he's served up for about 6 out of 8 seasons.

Don't see why people defend him with this "when he's on form" "when he's fully fit" nonsense, it's a rare occurrence with him to be one of them, never mind both. That's why he should be have been given the boot long ago.

Can't imagine what it would be like having someone in charge who didn't pander to overpaid underperforming lumps like this guy.

He's the epitome of every thing that's been wrong at Utd. Players rewarded for doing fck all, lauded for what they can occasionally produce when "fit and on form" and for not for what they actually produce consistently on the pitch.

9-10 years ago he showed promise, in 8 years he's never really looked like living up to that promise. Maybe losing a year to a broken leg had something to do with it, shit happens, better players than him have been booted out for less. But he's just not done enough to warrant any kind of future at the club.

I don't think you can't say about anyone, that they are the best player in their position in the world. Ronaldo used to be one of the best players in the world, he isn't anymore. Shaw is 10 years younger than him, should be in his best physical form and is already struggling with his fitness and basic conditioning. Also, he's already been dropped by ten Hag, since Shaw isn't providing the intensity that he wants. So there goes your idea I guess.

Yeah, it’s possible he never plays again. But the last time he was dropped, when Telles first came, he raised his game and had the best spell of his career, went to the Euros with England and was one of our best players. Maybe he does it again, maybe not.

He probably will play again, it's just the likelihood of him reaching that form again and maintaining it, is a gamble we shouldn't be taking. He's had his chance, time to move on.

This is precisely the point. At times he has been poor? He's been here since 2014. He was excellent the season after signing Telles. Prior to and after that he's probably managed half a season of good form in eight seasons. Your description can be said of pretty much anyone. Overall his career has been very, very poor.

So when do you ever get rid of a player then? Play him when he's good and drop him when not? Well he's been useless for about six of his eight seasons here.

We have another decent left back now. Why can’t they push each other and we select whichever player is in form?

If Shaw can’t get back into the team at all and it goes on all season then it’s probably time to look at bringing another LB in but for now I think we have higher priorities.

Getting all animated about booting him out (as some are) for being fat or lazy or whatever is trending is a waste of energy as it just isn’t in the club’s best interest. Get him fit and fighting for a place and keep Malacia at it.

That’s the kind of comment I don’t like. Half the time I read posts about him being poor when he has been decent. He’s had some bad games (Christ, who hasn’t?). It’s a total exaggeration to say he’s been useless.

I absolutely don’t want him playing if he’s not going to be better than Malacia. I just think there’ll be times when he hits form and deserves his place. We know he can do it because we’ve seen it. If he and the coaching team can find a way to sustain his form he can be a very valuable member of the squad. It’s no skin off our nose is it?

Getting him fit is the issue in itself. Hence why people have lost belief in him.

He's been here way too long to be given the benefit of the doubt.
This sums up perfectly how I feel about him.

The other one is, his contract is running out. So, we will definitely need to make a decision soon. It's not about booting him out, it's about what standards ten Hag is trying to set. We need strength in depth. If you can meet basic requirements like availability and fitness, then it is probably best to part ways. Like we did with Evans, Rafael, Fábio, Smalling and probably soonish Jones and Bailly.

Erik Ten Hag prefer to use an unknown youth player than him to sub in for Malacia in Europe league games. For Shaw it's a battle to prove another manager wrong , either Ten Hag didn't rate him, didn't like his attitude ( probably playing COD all the time munching burger and fries ) or he couldn't reach the match fitness Ten Hag wanted from him, ETH didn't even bother to put him for 5 minutes.Like i said before, his age and body fat is the only thing he will gain from now on. I am afraid he is totally finished, i think in the future you should just watch his youtube compilation for nostalgia instead of wishing him to play his way back to the team.
By the way i don't believe he is injured , it's just an excuse for used by a manager when they don't want to play certain player.

Nah, defending and wanting to keep lazy gowls like this around in the hope that they somehow manage to achieve their potential is BS.

He hasn't done it yet and it doesn't look like he ever will. He had his chance, he's had more than enough chances already. Focus should be on what players do week in week out, not just what they can do whenever they decide to be bothered to do it.

Where is he again?
Was apparently injured yesterday. But surely he deserves to start soon. Malacia is doing fine defensively but we're lacking the passing and forward runs that Shaw brings when he's playing well.
