Are offices and schools also closed? What postponing football games is going to achieve. I think it would have better if respect was shown before every game than postponing

No, peasant.

You go to work/school from 8-16, and after that you mourn the death of the woman who was almost as old as Finland's declaration of independence. It's a tragedy, and no fun is allowed for the unforeseeable future.

The football powers that be completely misjudge their own fans as per usual.

Football brings a bit of light to people's lives, why cancel it now? That's before even considering the piles of money wasted on pre-booked travel and hotels by dedicated away fans.

The FA should be forced to reimburse any and all costs incurred by fans as a result of this cancellation. Morons.
Not to mention all the self employed workers and those on zero hours contracts who are gonna miss out on their pay for the weekend. Totally fecking needless.

They've just made all the people who weren't really that bothered miserable now too. Nice one.

Like the queen ever followed football anyway. I could see the horse racing and any other horsey sport being called off but football? Feckin eejits.
Well she did present Bobby Moore with the World Cup in 1966 and she had a grin all over her boat when she presented Southampton with the FA Cup in 1976.

I agree in the sense that "President Truss" would be a horrible idea.

However, there's arguably something to be said for the model used by several countries today, i.e. where the "president" is a figurehead with a limited tenure who commands a certain (but again limited) respect but who is not idolized and venerated (usually for no good reason) by the masses.

There aren't many truly convincing arguments for monarchy, are there? It's mainly about it being tradition at this stage. And - yes - that is (kind of, potentially) an argument in itself. But hardly a convincing one.

(Yeah - CE material, of course, sorry.)
I don't wanna derail the thread with a politics discussion but I thought it only right I engage with you, after you took the time to give a thoughtful response.

I just feel it ain't worth the bother to change it all. The best we could end up with is some kind of independent presidency, but that's not very different than what we have now. Our monarchs are mostly figureheads. Plus, those presidents would still have to be elected. That means some kind of politicisation would come into it, even if relatively light touch. I don't see many ways in which it would make life better and I could see a few ways in which it could be divisive, if people perceive the President to be in some way partisan or bought. With all the other problems Britain's got to deal with, I reckon changing the system would take up a lot of time for very little benefit to the man and woman in the street.

Just like the FA's decision to virtue signal/chase PR wins.

such a silly decision. I wonder what would they've done had this happened during the Wimbledon.

Is it just this weekend or the next one postponed too?
They're already saying the police don't have the resources to do the Queen's funeral and football matches, so its likely next week's off as well.

Makes the decision even more daft.

This really goes to show how out of touch with the commons the officials of England are, 10 days forced mourning...

It's like Europe moved on but England is still in 1850

Some of the comments here are quite unbelievable. Get your priorities straight, millions of people are mourning for nearly two weeks now and you only think of your dead queen.

The PL and EFL in the rush to be 1st to be seen doing something did the wrong thing and no one is shocked.

I bet they thought if we are 1st everyone else will follow and everyone else was like yeah no we are not cancelling, the PL and EFL are left holding their dicks looking like idiots
Yeah they definitely look like clowns, also can imagine Shields wasn't short of having something to say about her fight postponed

Here are a few people who died in the last year and who had huge contributions to the society (I'm sure I have missed many). Hundreds of millions of people are alive today because of people like Emil Freireich, Bernard Lown, Helen Murray Free, Yuan Longping, and many others on this list, yet practically no-one even knows their names. In the same time we are supposed to mourn someone who who has barely done anything more that wear stupid hats in public...

  • Isamu Akasaki - Nobelist for the invention of the LED lighting
  • Emil Freireich - Pioneer in the treatment of cancer, developed chemotherapy, known as the father of modern leukemia therapy
  • Richard R. Ernst - Nobel winner for the development of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, which paved the way for M.R.I.
  • Bernard Lown - Inventor and developer of the defibrillator for cardiac resuscitation, the cardioverter for correcting rapid disordered heart rhythms and the drug lidocaine to control heartbeat disturbances
  • Andrew Brooks - Developer of the first FDA-approved rapid saliva test for COVID-19 diagnosis
  • Helen Murray Free - Chemist who developed the diabetes testing
  • Yuan Longping - Plant scientist developed the first hybrid rice varieties, that were instrumental in curbing famine
  • Geert Jan van Oldenborgh - Climatologist who first linked natural disasters to climate change
  • Clive Sinclair - Pioneer in the development of personal computers, created the first electronic pocket calculator
  • Aaron T. Beck - Developer of cognitive behavior therapy
  • Albert Bandura - Leading psychologist in several fields of psychology, including social cognitive theory, therapy, and personality psychology, the transition between behaviorism and cognitive psychology. He is known as the originator of the social cognitive theory
  • Antony Hewish - Astronomer honored for the discovery of pulsars
  • Luc Montagnier - Nobelist for his discovery of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
  • Rosalind Cartwright - A neuroscientist, psychologist and an early researcher of sleep disorders
  • Chuck Geschke - Father of desktop publishing, founder of Adobe Inc. and co-creator of the PDF document format
  • Edmond H. Fischer - Nobelist who discovered how proteins regulate various cellular processes
  • Carolyn Shoemaker - Hunter of comets and asteroids, she discovered 32 comets (a record for the most by an individual) and more than 500 asteroids
  • Toshihide Maskawa - Nobelist for the discovery of the origin of the broken symmetry and at least three families of quarks in nature
  • Yves Coppens - Anthropologist, the discoverer of Lucy, together with Donald Johanson
  • Kamoya Kimeu - Paleontologist responsible for some of the most significant fossil finds that shaped our understanding of our evolutionary past, including a Homo habilis skull, an almost complete Homo ergaster skeleton known as Turkana Boy, the jaw of a Paranthropus boisei hominid, known as the Peninj Mandible
  • Arthur Dale Riggs - Geneticist who expressed the first artificial gene in bacteria
  • Sidney Altman - Nobelist for his work on the catalytic properties of RNA
  • Michael Collins - Astronaut, “third man” of the moon landing

It'll be off next weekend as well. No chance they have the Police to run a football weekend and do the Queen's funeral.

When is her funeral though? Won’t be next weekend will it, it will probably be the Monday or Tuesday after next weekend so the games should go ahead. I thought stewards were at grounds to keep it safe. Only need a few police officers outside the grounds and mainly when it’s derby matches or a match where both teams hate each other.

They'll just have to stay strong and pull through it like we did Kurt Cobain, Matt Busby and Princess Di. What a traumatic couple of years we had back then.

I think this is a good point:

I'm sure they will pull through it. Just making a point that some kids might be upset.

I'm sure the hordes of grown men whinging about a week of no football can pull through that as well.

Also, is the implication that the PL is scared of the Daily Fail?

They've needed loads more at our gaff recently. Coupled with the fact it's against Leeds.

Yes that’s true to be honest. Understand when we’re playing Leeds… didn’t it kick of last season with them in Manchester when we played them?

Kids are pretty resilient and will be hugely influenced by how their parents respond to this news. You can bet your arse the hand-picked Daily Mail anecdotes about sleepless five year olds all come from families that are ludicrously emotionally over-invested in the Royals. Which will be a very tiny minority of the population as a whole.

Although I get what you are saying but this is a head of state and not only that the second longest serving in history - you may not like it but her death is a significant moment in British history.

Nope. Cancelled the game at 1pm today and announced that they would be taking place tomorrow with all the other games. Up till that point no one knew if any of the games were going ahead.
Officially, yes, but the expectation since yesterday evening was that the games were not going to go ahead.

I think the following weeks matches clearly needing to be cancelled makes it a hard decision to understand. A poor decision really. Theres a thousand other details that mean it doesn't make any sense. Fixture pileup, disrupting workers and their wages, having 5+ days of disruption and the following weekend just being excessive, i haven't thought too much about it theres probably more.

It does make sense. Her funeral will be one of the biggest events in British history. We are a Royal state too so you can’t grumble at a once in a generation event.

I’m pretty sure most people would be watching her funeral rather than the football if I’m being honest. She’s as much of an icon as almost anyone in human history all things considered.

I mean if you block out all entertainment, what do you expect people to watch? Try having a football match during her funeral and see if anybody watches the funeral.

Honestly the only people who care are people who give a lot of importance to "British Royalty". Everyone will be a bit sad in a way, but a logical person would not cancel other events and put pressure on the common working class.

Also, about the once in a generation event, 2 marriages, have happened this generation, this death and now a new coronation for the king and then he will die in this generation which will be another event and then another coronation for his son and so on.

This generation will witness all this nonsense.
