Isn't this using a loose definition of invade?

The one that's surprising is Sweden, it feels like we would have been in a war with them at some point
Think a very loose definition. I think we ”invaded” Portugal for example to fight the French, who had invaded Spain and Portugal

I've only made it the first page and I already have a gapped mouth at some the comments and I'm not even British or European (from a Commonwealth nation in Africa so that should give you a clue about what I think of the British Royalty) but the sheer disrespect because a stupid round of weekend games got called of in mourning a much beloved Head of State. Even my country is mourning her death. I see stuff like this and it's another indication of how Western culture and traditions have fallen off a cliff in the pursuit of “modernization". No one worships Kings and Queens anymore, what we still should have is common respect for National leaders especially one who's dedicated her entire life to do some good in the world regardless of the privilege she was born into. When you think about the things we are supposedly supposed to do, think and say when known criminals are tragically killed by some shitty policing is a game being cancelled for the death a Head of State too much to ask for?
What a horrible fecking post.

Which of these countries do you live in?
I'm from Chile, i don't recall UK coming here with the purpose of taking land, which is why I meant.
UK sent traders, and merchants, and settled a little colony for trading in Magallanes.

They also helped us in our independence war against the old Spanish Empire, obviously it wasn't free, their main goal was to weaken the Spanish.

That's a lot of countries though, but still i don't get what "meaning" of invading they have in mind...i don't think sending armies to a land ,back then, owned 100% by the Spanish Empire counts as invading Chile the republic.

Iirc UK also sent tropes to other territories sending help to fight "x" common enemy, i don't think that can be counted as invading, otherwise Germany invaded the Middle East cause they sent tropes to countries owned by UK in order to helped these to fight the british enemy.

I agree that it was a poor decision but some of the reaction here has been well OTT.
I think it’s justified

Many people, my brother included, have spent money on hotels and travel to watch a football match and are now out of pocket for no justifiable reason. I’d be pissed off too

In The Netherlands we also have a monarchy, but its really weird for me seeing the football cancelled after the queens death.. Perhaps Im wrong but I cannot imagine it would even be opted by a single person to cancel the weekends sport events if our king would die..
Yeah but our second in line to the throne is FA President so that's the telling difference

fair enough

the football cancellations could have been handled better I guess; most of us will agree on at least this

think the FA jumped the gun a bit
Yeah they just assumed how Prince William felt rather than contacted his people to gauge it properly

Imagine something like this at all grounds... Would have been a terrible tribute. Much better doing nothing at all obviously.

Andorra too, given how often we’ve fought the French and Spanish. You’d have thought we’d have got them in the middle at some point.

Unless they just didn’t exist at the time.

Agreed. The demonstration of respect and affection for The Queen at stadiums throughout the country would have been much more powerful than being stuck at home or at the pub.

Going through withdrawal and the 15:00 games would have just started.

Wife wanted to go for a walk. I said no. Just want to wallow on here.

I can't list all major events and put them into a cancel football or not category.

But I'd ask does the football need to be cancelled in a practical sense and does cancelling it help in an emotional sense.

The answer to both questions in this instance is no. I can't imagine there are large numbers of people thinking today's football was stopping them mourning and refelcting.

In Liverpool a child got murdered in their own home couple of weeks ago. On a national level nothing was altered or changed.

I think we need to start asking why we attach so much importance to some things and not others. In essence we need to grow up as a nation.
I second that.

still feels like a mistake to call games off when other sports are going ahead.

My guess is the Tory government purposely left it up to the FA so that they and not Truss's useless tools would be blamed either way (saying that the FA are pretty much a bunch of tools too)

I don't think there's anything devious or deep behind it, the PL just misjudged it and thought more things would not be running. It's annoying and they've shot themselves in the foot, but it is what it is.

I don't get it. You're mourn someone by closing shop? Seems they want people to 'kneel' for the sake of it.
I have actually heard of a couple of places (estate agents and a car sales firm) who ordered their staff in but told them they aren't not allowed to work. No customer service, no answering the phone, nothing. And all have to sit at the back of the office with the lights of as a sign of respect. I kid you not!

I presume you're telling the truth as it would be the stupidest thing to make up, but that sounds like absolute bollocks. What sort of work place would bring in workers and pay them to do nothing?

One of the staff is my nephew's girlfriend so very much the truth. Of course it's utterly crazy but their are some loony bosses out there (I've worked for more than one!)

we bloody better be allowed to play on Thursday... there hasn't been anything besides the Queen on telly for three days and if we have to keep that going for a full week, my head might explode! Seriously, I'm home that day so the early kick off is great!

Read on Sky Sports that it's already confirmed our game on Thursday will go ahead.

Funeral confirmed for Monday 19th then? Hopefully next weekend's football will not be affected then.

From BBC

"The UK will have a bank holiday on Monday 19 September for Queen Elizabeth II's funeral.

The bank holiday in honour of Britain's longest-reigning monarch was approved earlier today by King Charles III

It marks the final stage of a period of national mourning"

It's changing, but currently cricket crowds still act with more decorum than football crowds. (Also, that's the English national team playing - they embody the country in a way that club teams can't.) This probably depends upon how you define respect, but what shows the greatest respect: abandoning play for the day, or fitting-in a quick minute of silence before the start of a match, and then getting back to the business of barracking the opposing team's millionaires and calling the VAR official a w****r? Thinking about it, there's much to football that's ceremonial, like the protocols of royal life. If people are keen to do away the latter, maybe some of the former, like pre-match team parades and anthems and trophies and medals can also be got rid of?

Decent going for a guy who hasn't been around for 350 years to approve this.

Why wouldn’t we be allowed to play a game in Moldova

Strange decision so I can understand people being annoyed by this, if this happened in Spain people would be fuming too. The whole thing just feels forced and out of touch.
