I have no idea either, yet.
That's very true especially in a forum where in the general section there are threads that openly mock religion citing prejudice views with an acceptance.
This is not about what anyone believes. We are all free to believe what we like. It's a choice. I'd be offended if I had a religion and you were defining it by associated human rights abuses.

We're not clutching at straws. City are constantly drooled over with very little caveat and I'll try find the article that said Mansour has half the sports journalists charmed like little schoolboys. You simply can't perpetuate the celebration of city - a team built on just the same level of corruption, murder and abhorrent human rights - and then expect people to be unanimously outraged by Qatar. One was a gateway for the other

Just read about the land deals the guy has been allowed to waltz into in Manchester. Barely a peep about them just a cultish fawning about guardiola - who will happily lecture us on other political issues

The all round hypocrisy is rank
Is there hypocrisy in the world? yes, everywhere. To use it as an excuse not to stand up for the oppressed is weak and cowardly.

Also, read David Conn and Philipe Auclair. They do great work on the evils of the game.

Boycott man city? Off to Abu Dhabi for December where pep will smile and bend the knee for his masters again. Migrant worker deaths, lgbt rights, broad human rights abuses - they all exist there and City are used to try legitimise the place, and manager happy to smile along. But the reaction to raising this obvious hypocrisy and similarity is often defensive from all quarters - proof that sportswashing works
Yep. I boycott United ffs. Would rather see us in the championship under fan ownership.

Which countries and which invasions?

How far back are we going, for instance should Italy not be considered as a potential host in the future because of the Roman Empires invasion of Parthia? Or should it just be more recent invasions like the US in Iraq? (Qatar took part in the 1st Gulf war)

And if it's only the latter then how long after an invasion can a country be considered again?
The US is still in Syria. The Turks are there too. No one creates a fuss about it. The Israelis are occupying part of Palestine against all UN resolutions. No one calls for their ban from FIFA or any other sports. This is now.

Should I boycott India, Nepal, and Bangladesh too? I mean, those countries must be poorly run and offer their citizens little chance of success in life if those citizens are desperate enough to go abroad and work in Qatar.
You give or don't give your money or support to who you like. The issue in this thread has become not that, it's people saying it's morally wrong to take a moral stand. It's a real Joseph Heller humdinger.

I have done most of my protesting against the US but it has feck to do with standing up for the LGBT community in Qatar.

I have been arrested in solidarity with Palestine. But so what? Anyone who really cares wouldnt let any of the whataboutery in this thread stand in the way of help, no matter how small or symbolic.

There are human rights abuses now in Qatar where the glare of the world is. A perfect time to highlight it.

No they don't. They are saying it's morally wrong to be selective in their stance. Russia is being rightly boycotted because of their illegal invasion. Other countries are not boycotted because of their illegal occupation. In fact it may be illegal to boycott their illegal occupation.

As an individual yes you should. Nothing much you can do about it too I accept. What gets me is associations and countries who are being hypocrites.

Accuse someone directly or it just smacks of not giving a shit and just undermining the protest. So well done on that. Qatar and Fifa appreciate it I'm sure. The LGBT community, not so much.

Without pointing out that it's structural as to where the media focuses you all just look like massive homophobes and misogynists.

And its not hypocrisy, its capitaism. Its the best narrative to make money. If that means being pro Islam, fine. If it means bekng anti Islam, that's fine too.

That's not what I'm using it as an excuse for. I'm saying that its the cause of complacency. For ten years we've had whataboutism and mental gymnastics to defend city, or full silence by people now condemning Qatar.

I wonder what this world cup offers for a tourist. It looks like wherever you go, you will end up at the city center after 30 mins.

I think we're on the same page about Qatar etc but I disagree on city. I've never seen so many United fans willing to separate sport from reality with such passion as when getting giddy for city. On this site and in real life. As for the likes of Lineker and other pious personalities. Not a whisper. They're to guardiola what teenage girls are to harry styles.

They're dicks, literally paid to speak, feck em, I wouldnt let their compromised, paid for opinions enter a serious conversation.

Any opposition they have to Qatar is measured to fall short of having any impact.

For me opression is about the victim, not who is doing the oppressing or who does or doesnt condemn it.

Does anyone really think that the Qataris don't love the racist/hypocritical/Islamophobic narrative underpinning the protest?

I know if I was them I'd be helping that along any way I could. So I'd say the opposite is the way to go.

I'll probably boycott most of it but not for the right reasons.

I checked the fixtures. The group stages look like the drizzling fecking shits aside 2, maybe 3 matches. Wall to wall rubbish.

What? This is nonsense.

Let's just stick to the Caf (you're talking specifically about the Caf in another post): Do you really believe that a significant amount of posters on here who are currently condemning Qatar have been engaging in mental gymnastics to defend Manchester City?

Great post. I think you have perfectly identified the hypocrisy of the English media, in the pocket of Abu Dhabi and now Saudi Arabia too.

But also, feck the Qatar WC. From the appalling human rights abuses that went into building the tournament to the abhorrent discourse on the LGBTQ+ community that has occurred thus far, i will personally be boycotting it insofar as i will not watch. I'm almost at that point with the premier league too.

Not sure if others are similar but couldn't care less about the politics of it. It's a world cup, it comes around once every four years, I'm excited as ever and will watch a ton of games, and I barely watch any league games currently as it is.

So the recent economic downturn won’t affect the WC that badly?

There is definitely hypocrisy in the media, in all media, sadly. But they are literally bending to to the will of advertisers or governments. That's a whole other unrelated conversation because they are not leading the calls for a boycott. Or even joining in a little bit.

So basically this thread has devolved into whether Islamophobia trumps homophobia or vice versa.

There has been more awareness, media pieces and pushback from the media with respect to Qatar than there has been towards Manchester City, from what I've observed, perhaps because of that exact dynamic you just described (i bolded it).

No they are not hosting. The USA is the next WC. Russia got banned and thrown out because of their illegal invasion of Ukraine. Israel has been illegally occupying Palestine for years but nothing happens to them. Turkey is in Syria and nothing happens to them. Shouldn't they be banned by UEFA? It's utter hypocrisy by FIFA and other internal organizations. Yes Qatar or any of the middle east countries should never be hosting any international sports if human rights is the criteria. Just like many other countries.

The damage to the reputation of football amongst young people that granting the last two World Cups to intolerant, oppressive regimes with appalling human rights records has done will be irreversible.

Aye, if there is pushback from broadcasters who are attending and covering its because of conversations like this. If there is grassroots and public unease they will pay lip service to it. And yes that promotes more public dissent. And that's the point..

The BBC and Sky and huge swathes of the local sports media are going to dress City up all they can because thats literally the product they are selling us.

It's capitalism but that's how they work, it's PR and accountancy, they're not actually moral decisions or with any real agenda.

If nobody gave a toss about Qatar, the BBC sports dept wouldn't be saying a word.

Also like with Newcastle, there was initial chat but we have short attention spans and if this world cup went on for years a lot of the protest would lose its breath.

Also, there are journalists who do report on City and how corrupt the game is, but readers get bored or busy with life and it slips down the page.

We're all part of it to a degree, but we can't keep our shoulder to the wheel on everything all the time. You have to choose your battles.

And with all eyes on Qatar that's a good place to spend energy on a protest..
