Different phase of play. It’s not an offence to be in an offside position.
Yeah that's rule but looking at that image the Ecuador player is still behind the goalkeeper
But you can be in an offside position in a phase of play you're not active in
But that picture has nothing to do with anything. That's not the last action before the goalscorer gets onto it?
It’s definitely not offside. Anybody saying otherwise hasn’t a notion.
I'm not sure where the dispute is for this..

Is the argument that it didn't come off an Ecuador head and it was just the keeper who punched the ball up in the air? If so, fair enough it wouldn't be offside, it's hard to tell from the replay.

If you accept that the ball came off an Ecuador head, the next player to get a touch on the ball is an Ecuador player who's foot/leg was offside at the time of the header.

Or is the argument that because that offside didn't directly result in a goal then the goal should stand anyway, despite the offside in the build up? That would be a stretch considering there's like 4 seconds between the offside and goal being scored.

exactly. they’re showing a freeze frame from a direct ball into the box
First of all in case you still haven't realized, you can very well be offside from a direct freekick :houllier: , secondly the freeze frame is from when the first aerial duel inside the box happens, not from when the ball was played into the box.

Wander this discussion into whatever side street you want, it’s a poor atmosphere.

Many WC games are. You’re not going to get 20,000 Ecuadorians in there and another 20,000 Qatar supporters. It was never going to be a cauldron.

But if you need me to say it… no, I do not believe that every single sound is from a speaker. Nor do I care if EPL teams do it (almost all, don’t).
You don't even make sense. So if all you hear is the speakers, how the feck do you know the atmosphere is dead? Did they turn the speakers off at one point during the game for you to know the atmosphere was dead? and if you believe it's been done at many world cups, why complain now.

That goal was never offside and the official offside imagine is seconds after the ball was struck

the leg they’re showing is the guy who challenges for the header initially. go back and watch the replay no other player is ahead of him

I thought Qatar spent a lot of money in their youth players when they got awarded the world cup to make them decent for it. Money well spent

It doesn’t matter. When the ball was last touched by an Ecuador player Valencia was in an onside position. He neither plays the ball or interferes with an opponent when the keeper comes out. And on closer inspection it looked to me like the first header was by a Qatar player. It’s just not offside.

That’s one way of saying a team that would never qualify for a WC in a thousand lifetimes are getting outplayed in every aspect by a team that are here on merit
But somehow they are Asian champions and got to the semis of the Gold cup. On paper they would still have had a decent chance of qualifying. Although on this showing they look absolutely hopeless.

They're the current Asia Cup champions so it did work out in some way.

This is real shit on a stick football being served up by Qatar. Great way to kick off the tournament.
you'd have thought they'd at least have put their game against The Netherlands first (even Donny would look good against them - yes, I know he's not there!)

Can’t see Qatar getting back into this, they’re shaking in their boots.
