Correctly predicted Italy to win Euro 2020
Why doesn't he have a single cap for the national team? He would be very good in their 3-5-2 formation and the competition at RWB doesn't look that great.
Only just really breaking through. Would have been odd for him to have been involved up to this pointWhy doesn't he have a single cap for the national team? He would be very good in their 3-5-2 formation and the competition at RWB doesn't look that great.
He was good last season as well. I think it's a bit strange he hasn't been selected yet.Only just really breaking through. Would have been odd for him to have been involved up to this point
Nowhere near as much hype around him plus he’s a lot weaker defensively than other options in the Dutch NT.He was good last season as well. I think it's a bit strange he hasn't been selected yet.
He didn’t get as much hype, but I would expect that the manager of the national still knew about his performances and potential. It's not like he is playing in an unknow league or something. Plus his defensive weaknesses should be partially covered by playing as a RWB and having the likes of Van Dijk, De Ligt, Timber, De Vrij and Ake covering for you.Nowhere near as much hype around him plus he’s a lot weaker defensively than other options in the Dutch NT.
That's the key isn't it. No point just having incredible pace.I've only seen highlights of him playing but he seems to have ridiculous acceleration over the first few yards. And if he has the touch and technique to go along with his speed, then I think the coaching staff can improve his defensive game.
This is what 99 pace looks like in real life, apparently.
He was selected a few months back but then got injured before the international break. Now hes in the preliminary squad and rightfully so. Van Gaal would be stupid not to select him.Why doesn't he have a single cap for the national team? He would be very good in their 3-5-2 formation and the competition at RWB doesn't look that great.
This is one of the most frusrating highlight vids I have ever seen, half of the scenes are goals, why are they always cut off right before the ball goes in?I've only seen highlights of him playing but he seems to have ridiculous acceleration over the first few yards. Makes sense, and I'm of the opinion that in modern football you don't need your fullbacks to be Maldini defensively if you have a good defensive structure around them (see TAA). So I'd much rather take the guy who's dynamite going forward even if he might get beaten 1v1 occasionallyThis is one of the most frusrating highlight vids I have ever seen, half of the scenes are goals, why are they always cut off right before the ball goes in?
My opinion on Frimpong, since I watch every game of him: If he would play for a better team and had more international exposure, he would be getting shouts for being one of the top 5 RB's in the world this season. His speed + acceleration is incredible, every game he has 2 or 3 dribblings where you ask yourself how the feck has he gotten past those defenders. Obviously has his strenghts offensively and has been even used as a winger this season occasionally. But some claims in this thread that hes bad defensively are simply not true. Probably better in a back 5 in general but you can play him in a 4 without a headache. Positioning is decent, recovery speed is incredible.
He is destined for great things, I am sure about that. Doubt we sell him in January but might next summer if we miss out on European football.
Just need to find a third guy to do the defending stuff, then.Having this guy basically get to run the flank while Antony cuts inside is fecking ideal
Martinez and Casemiro do double the work anywayJust need to find a third guy to do the defending stuff, then.
Team defensive structure > individualsJust need to find a third guy to do the defending stuff, then.
It was a weakness, but with Erik I really don't think it will be moving forward. He's quite weak defensively, but can be effective if you open up space for him. The kind of player, where you need to think about how you will use him, before you buy him. That seems to be a weakness at United, so I'd be skeptical. I'm not sure Leverkusen would be willing to sell for a reasonable fee halfway through the season either, he's been one of their better players this year.
No please, very susceptible to defensive mistakes. Great going forward though but don't think he's ready for a big team yet.Tweet

Yes please
Point taken. But he is so skilful going forward. Somewhat like Evra.No please, very susceptible to defensive mistakes. Great going forward though but don't think he's ready for a big team yet.
Spot on, Dalots' defensive awareness improvement is testament to that.Great going forward but weak defensively would be absolutely fine in a 21 year old fullback. Much rather that than the other way around. "Great going forward" is the less coachable part.
Not personal to poster but this post illustrates a POV I just don’t get. For years we gripeabout Valencia and Young at RB - why do we have converted wingers in defense, we need a proper fullback etc…. So we go and buy a very good defensive fullback (granted his attacking needs work) and suddenly now defenders don’t need to defend they should be joining the attack!Celtic pal of mine says he is tremendously fast with decent end product but would need work defensively. I'd be up for getting rid of AWB and getting him in, cause at the moment we are like a squad with only one RB anyway
He isn't really though. He relishes the challenge of a one v one battle, but isn't a great defender outside of that.So we go and buy a very good defensive fullback
I wouldn’t have TAA in our team over DalotNot personal to poster but this post illustrates a POV I just don’t get. Colour me confused.
Irwin, the Nevs, and the da Silvas all bombed on in support and whipped crosses in, but first and foremost they were defenders.
We mock Trent cos he can’t defend but everyone of us would have him in our team. I don’t get it.
TAA works for Liverpool because they cover him with midfield runners. Now their midfield legs are tiring it’s no surprise that his form dipped. Don’t think he would be the right fit for usI wouldn’t have TAA in our team over Dalot
Thing is ETH has had a look at him already and preferred to let him get loan game time and go into this season with just Dalot and two injured fullbacks in Brandon Williams and AWB, maybe he just didn't fancy him enough.I don’t see us going for a right back seeing as Laird has apparently (I’ve only read/heard rather than seen) been very good on loan so would be a perfect deputy and then eventually rival for Dalot at right back, we’ll want to spend big on a striker and another midfielder in the summer whilst we’ll need a back up centre back with at least 3 centre backs leaving in the summer.
Nah I think you obviously want a player like Laird to go on loan and get minutes at that level. Don’t think that has any baring on things. It was the right thing to do.Thing is ETH has had a look at him already and preferred to let him get loan game time and go into this season with just Dalot and two injured fullbacks in Brandon Williams and AWB, maybe he just didn't fancy him enough.
Frimpong is dutch and came from city academy so returning here to manchester for £20-30mish that seems to be the going rate whilst selling off Laird for £5-10M wouldn't suprise me atall.
I'd honestly be in favour of this from what i've seen from frimpong aswell because Laird has good quality but he has been a bit injury prone and he is nowhere near as quick.
I liked Valencia at right back but I take your point. Conversely, I want rid of AWB because it is blatantly obvious he isn't good enough going forward and that's what we need to help build the attacks. I think we are stronger in midfield these days so we have more cover allowing the full backs to bomb on, so would want to see a more attacking full back signed. Not personal to poster but this post illustrates a POV I just don’t get. Same with Hannibal, Fernandez and Amad
It is just incredibly lazy, and typical redcafe. To see how lazy posters are, just look at the Martinez transfer thread.Seems to be a common myth in football nowadays that every fullback who is known for their offensive contributions is automatically "suspect" in defense. Frimpong isnt prime Maldini but he can defend well, I assure you that.
