I'd much rather Spain had gone out to be fair, their football is torture.
Could not agree more. Love their pressing but their passing is reminiscent of us under LVG although they do it more in the opposition half.

Much prefer Germany but no striker and playing Muller cost them dearly

Spain played it beautifully the more I think about it. Looked risky at one time but they decided not to over extend themselves when they knew it was safe.
Not sure they deserve credit for losing and being, at one point, in a position to go out. Just think they were poor, to be honest.

If I was a German player on the pitch after Costa Rica scored the 2-1 I would have stopped playing. If Germany goes out then we take Spain with us! For a brief while the biggest shock in the history of football was a real possibility. I still take the scalp of one grand nation though. Great day for football.

Costa Rica further showed Poland how to play a game with heart and desire yet it is the cowardly display of Poland that goes through unfortunately.

I was convinced that it was out but looking at that shot from above it looks like it was the right decision.
On the one hand I can't imagine the players planning the defeat, it doesn't seem right to me, but on the other hand the succession of passes at the end...
We played a shit game but because of those final minutes I'm left wondering what version we'll see against Morocco.
I expected more from Balde, and he should have rested more players, Pedri or Gavi.
Busquets needs more help in the middle

Yep.

Game killing ball cycling vileness, and for the less talented Spaniards, kill the game through shithousery. Sometime both.

God I wish for them to get a Germany-Brazil style humbling, get a peak Arjen Robben into this tournament somehow.

Old Germany (pre-2006) = going far in tournaments scoring from few chances, even when getting outplayed, thanks to amazing strikers/forwards that didn't waste any chance.

New Germany (post-2014) = amazing xG, dominates possession and create many chances... eliminated early because can't score when they should.

This Spain side give me strong Barcelona vibes. Able to give the feeling that they're dominant in some games but also able to fail spectularly while passing the ball around all game long when the stakes are getting higher. Kinda what they've displayed in the past decade even if this year's team is better than the 2018/2014 version. We'll see how it goes from now on.

ITV are absolutely fuming Japan have progressed.
They're fuming because they spent the entirety of halftime telling us all how unbelievably, irrefutably amazing and unbeatable Spain were, only for Japan to go out and make them look silly.

Anyone but Spain to win the World Cup. Please.
Still have a sneaky feeling they might make the final. Obviously they can be beat as they just were tonight but as horrible as they can be to watch it must be demoralizing to play against a team that barely gives you any possession.

I wonder if the likes of England, France, Portugal have the energy to press them all over the pitch?

Souness in particular. It was terrible analysis, Japan were letting them play their game in the first half. As soon as they pressed, Spain folded and conceded two.

Think they did similar with Germany, perhaps it's a tactic and if so, fair enough.

In theory, how much time would a team have needed to fire in 3 OG’s? Wasn’t there about a 3 min difference in games? That would have been ridiculously funny.

It was out for a goal kick. I never studied geometry or much at school, but the freeze frame shows clear sustainably sourced artificial light between ball and line.

Is this a joke?
Costa Rica could've put them out. The results were unfavored for Spain up until 73 minutes. It was a coin toss until 85", they literally had no control over the other match.
In another alt universe, you would call them a coward.

You can just tell that Souness will still be angrily muttering to absolutely no one in his house at 3am.

"The ball went out! Why can't we see the pictures for ourselves?"

Wife: "Go to sleep, Graham."

No more than a minute, given they'd be restarting the game themselves after each own goal.

Well Germany do have a history of doing stuff like that tbh.

Depends on how lethal they are but players like Saka, Rashford, Mbappé, Dembele, Coman, Martinelli etc. could tear them appart in transition. Coachs just need to figure a gameplan to pierce their 1st line of pressing but once you break through, you'll face a backtracking Busquets or Rodri and that could lead to a lot off very good opportunities.

Might also be hard for them to defend a good box striker.

So sad to see the German's having a goal line decision go against them in the World Cup.
I know that your post is sarcastic but they really only have themselves to blame.

Costa Rica actually gave them a lifeline by beating Japan.

Nope the ball was in. The problem for most is the fact it's a sphere so it's misleading from a few angles.

There's no doubt about it, it looks in from the angle slightly left from the line so it means it was even more in in reality. 0 doubt that they took the right decision.

Makes me think of the goal from Ajax againt Real Madrid, you had to explain basic geometry to a lot of Real fans.
