Fair enough. Personally, I think the criticism of his passing and ball-playing is excessive. He's not the best at it, but I've seen Ramsdale have similarly average performances in that respect - and he is rightly lauded as one of the best keepers in the league. As far as shot stoppers go, DDG is still one of the best in the league.
It's not just passing and ball-playing, DDG is also poor in crosses stopped and sweeping. If Mourinho is our manager or we want to play like Mourinho's style, DDG being a shot stoppers alone wouldn't be a problem. Our manager right now is ten Hag and he wants build his team to play from the back, progressive, and can retain possession

Is the CM a replacement for Eriksen?
Not directly but just need someone who can partner Casa and is able to progress ball, also means Eriksen is able to be rested more because played a lot this season

FIFA says Lopez from Marseille is the best passer of the attainable guys but I'm getting him confused with Diego Lopez and other mid-table La Liga guys.

From what I've seen, Sanchez is a much better shot stopper than Raya, though it sounds like he'd cost at least 30M more.

Do you get the impression that ETH is unhappy with De Gea? I take your point, but honestly I think we have other priorities still. We need a striker, maybe even two. We need other players too for depth. I don't think a goalkeeper is a priority.

It is of utmost priority I would say. Our defence looks panicky when De gea has the ball at his feet. The first goal Arsenal scored came from him and his poor decision making. Time and again we concede silly sloppy goals from degea’s poor distribution. Not only that, we easily concede possession too from his long kicks which puts us on the back foot making the opponents grow more confident and stronger as the game goes on. It’s these small things which shifts the momentum in the match. We can’t build up anything from the back with a keeper like that. Not to mention his inability to command the area and crossing and other things.

Do you get the impression that ETH is unhappy with Martial and Weghorst? Very weird question right? Because no manager should show their unhappiness in public because it will kill the player's confidence and can ruin the season. 15m-20m for Raya is exactly the price we need since it's affordable and won't prevent us in signing striker. Keeper should be at least in the top 3 priority to improve our starting XI to allow ETH to build his team to play from the back, progressive, and can retain possession

Yeah sounds like Raya would be more that sweeper type keeper Erik needs to play his style of football. Think Arsenal were looking at him before they signed Ramsdale.

Getting rid of de gea isnt best for the club
Although I don't mind if De Gea is leaving but none here seems expecting to get rid De Gea. We still need 3 keepers (someone, DDG, and Heaton). Signing Raya for 15m to upgrade De Gea and kind of signing to prepare for De Gea leaving in 2024 (contract expired) is sensible transfer with low consequences.

How isn’t it? The guys single Handedly cost us more goals than anyone in the last year I’d say. He’s a liability. Yes he might have the odd game where he saves everything but there’s always a mistake in him and his style of play obviously doesn’t match with ETH, therefore it won’t help us in the way we’re trying to play.

We need a keeper who can play with his feet and come off his line. We play much higher up the pitch with ETH and when the ball goes over the top, De Gea rarely comes out to get it, leaving Martinez or whoever is next to him in a foot race against some pretty quick forwards. Same issue with crosses, he doesn’t come out and claim anything, at best he will punch it to the edge of the box which invites a shot.

The talk about a deal for Costa has gone quiet so I presume that’s off the table. Raya would be a lot cheaper for sure and is much more rounded than De Gea, although obviously not as good a shot stopper. The other issue with De Gea is simply the contract he’s one. We shouldn’t be paying a keeper £350k a week, especially one who is elite in one area and weak in others. The game has changed since he was considered the worlds best purely because of his shot stopping ability.

Negative:
Not a sweeping keeper.
Poor distribution and Panic on the ball
Struggling to handle crosses
375k p/w wages

Positive:
Shot stopper

I don't know how can some people don't think it's the best for the club to upgrade our current keeper. 15m for Raya is a sensible transfer business.

I dont really know much about Raya, but in the other side, it will be very difficult to get rid of De Gea, and bench him.

He has, so far, 2 good seasons for us and in terms of balance in the dressing room it will be tough.

But, yes we need upgrade on him.

I like Ilan Meslier a lot, and think he has a lot of potential, but would Leeds sell us a player ?

Diogo Costa is very good with his feet, but shot stopping is not his best qualities. Would he be an instant and super upgrade to De Gea ? I don t know.

I think Meslier should be the choice for me.

David Raya. I suspect us and Spurs will be looking to sign him in the summer. Maybe even Chelsea as well.

Diogo Costa will surely also be looked at. He's still young and has time to improve his shot stopping.

How is shot stopper a positive for De Gea? Please correct if I'm wrong, the stats you posted (PSxG - GA) show that there are 74% of total number of GKs in the top 5 leagues with 3960 or more minutes played in the last 365 days, performing better than him at shot stopping. Also, can please you tell me what is the total number of GKs with these criteria (about 44 games played in the last 365 days) so we can figure out the exact number?

I wish we would just go for Maarten Vandevoordt. Feels like he has it all. The whole transfer to the RB club is weird with the timing.

To be fair I don’t even rate DDG shot stopping ability anymore considering that he couldn’t stop the shot vs Brentford. But I have to use the posters’ logic who keep claiming DDG is good at shot stopping is what matter so I can make a point to them that one positive doesn’t neglect four negatives.

365 days means it is based on 1 full year. So think of it as 27th January 2022 to 27th January 2023. It’s a fair assessment to reflect the overall of what the player has contributed and done in a full year. This also helps us to identify what kind of keeper Raya is. Although some stats can be affected by team’s playing style. For example ederson has few touches compare to Allison and Raya because Man City play very dominant of football in the opposition half.

He isn't elite is any area anymore. He's really really good at pulling off crazy relfex saves every other game, that's about it.

His overall shot stopping is average for a PL keeper.

Everything else is below the average PL keeper.

He's not worth 100k a week.

It's a shame we had the work permit problems with Milinković-Savić because he's been doing rather nicely at Torino. I quite like what I have seen from Mamardashvili at Valencia on the few occasions I have watched him. Overall though, the obvious choice is Raya, who can do a little bit of everything to a good standard and is great with the ball at his feet and at sweeping in behind. He'd be a bargain at the reported £15m. The other obvious option that springs to mind is Pau Lopez, but he'd surely be a lot more expensive. We have to go for Raya.

People may disagree, but I would take Pickford personally, would be obtainable for sure next season.
He wouldn’t be my first choice, but I don’t get why people loathe him so much. Do people assume he’s crap because he plays for England?

He always looks like he’s about to burst into tears, which is a bit disconcerting. It doesn’t really hamper his goalkeeping ability though.

And as you point out, he’d surely be obtainable. Weren’t there rumours that ETH was interested in him? Probably bollocks, but plenty on here remain firm in their belief that Pep was desperate to sign Alexis, Maguire and Ronaldo.

Raya isn't tall enough. :wenger:
Neither was Chris Turner, who was a better all round keeper than Gary Bailey.

I believe there’s evidence that short(er) keepers have a lot less longevity than tall ones, and tend to decline once in their 30s. Raya is 27, so we should get at least three years out if him.

Any logic to it? Or maybe based on a small population? Few goalkeepers are short, so one or two could skew it…

Santiago Cañizares was great even as an old goalkeeper. He was short, right?

I'm under the impression that De Gea is quite decent at shot stopping this season, but his stat is below average. It tells us the shots which he saved, many others can, and the shots he conceded, he should've done better. And I haven't watched enough football this season to know which case is right.

I knew of get a lot of negative responses for suggesting him, but to me he's a very good GK, can play out from the back, leads the back line well and has plenty of experience.

He'd surely jump at the chance to play for United and wouldn't be phased by the pressure.

I don't think he'd command that much of a fee either, especially if Everton did go down,

Amazing how people think an English player can be cheap. No chance that the England number 1 will be sold on the cheap by everton. Arsenal had to pay 30m for ramsdale even when the team was relegated. Everton will ask between 40m to 50m at the minimum for this dude. He isnt that good either...basically the english de gea
