Not at all. I'm not saying you have to be a good player to be a good coach.
I'm just wondering what these finishing drills are that can suddenly turn a 27 year old into a top finisher. Almost immediately. Barely any practice required. From a manager who wasn't a goal scorer. That's one hell of a drill Emery has up his sleeve.
Or could it be its just a player reaching hispeak? Or maybe having some short term form?
What's more likely.
As I tried to explain earlier. Finishing is a skill. NOT a talent. People often conflate that with what natural goal scorers do. Natural goal scorers don't have to be taught how to finish. For them they are taught how to use movement to their best advantage because the naturally have the composure to slow all play around them in their minds and the natural affinity to almost always hit the ball sweetly to evade a keeper.
But there exist players like Watkins. Calvert Leweyn (before Ancelotti worked on him before injury set in again) Who get into all the right positions. But were not consistently hitting the balls in the right way because they DON'T have the inate instinct. Players like that can get better by improving there finishing through practice and study.
Best example I can think of amongst elite players is Henry. He went from being an ok finisher to a truly deadly marksman within a year of arriving at arsenal. Able to out score the likes of Owen without ever having an Owen's natural variety of goal scoring finishes in his arsenal.
Even in our current team. Martial is more of a natural finisher than rashford when fit. But a Rashford thanks to steadily improving his finishing skill can now match or surpass him in numbers.
