Yeah it’s like people automatically look for what validation they can find for their bias.

He had two runs on the left when they tried to break that ended up in sweet faff all. We were lionising possession but for a 15 minutes spell at the beginning of the 2nd half (which was expected).

He’s a glorified CB.
People need to ask themselves the following: "Why is Declan Rice afforded so much time and space on the ball in the opponent's final 3rd?"

Answer: He has no end product and can't pass.

Bossed the midfield today and would improve the midfield instantly. But people downplay his performance because he is English. I'd have him over Sabitzer or Fred any fecking day.

Good player against shite teams. Overpriced and unnecessary for United, we need to steer well clear.

He’s physical, fairly quick, he can pass the ball and he’s aggressive.

We have no players who tick all of those players who play in midfield. Casemiro is slow, Eriksen is slow, weak and timid, Fred isn’t aggressive nor can he pass for sh*t, McTominay can’t pass.. we need more quality players like Rice in our midfield. Simple as that.

Because dominating a game is just on the ball. :houllier:

But lets look our midfielders, who had 65% possession.

Take your time and tell me what they did today?
Controlled all the space, forced West Ham to park the bus. Our midfield isn't even good but still were on top.

0 assists, 0 goals, 1 shot, 2 tackles, 0 shots on target, 0 key passes, 64 touches.

Some of you have the lowest bar possible.
Gone are the days when people could actually watch a game and come up with an opinion without using stats.

But seeing as you like stats so much, according to whoscored, he was the highest rated centre midfielder (7.7) in today's game.

Casemiro and Eriksen got 6.8 and 6.5, respectively, despite having more passes, more shots and tackles then Rice. I guess common sense comes into it after all.

P.S.

Rice put up almost identical stats to Caicedo in the FA cup sem-final against us. One performance was hailed as the next best thing, one was having the ''lowest bar possible'. The Caf will continue to Caf.

Forced West Ham to park the bus? Are you sure?

The way I saw it was West Ham saying, ''if you're good enough, come and break us down'', and we didn't have the nous to do it.

Palhinha is probably a both cheaper and better option.

They had 34 per cent of the ball.

I also watched the game, he didn't do anything of note that calls for the term 'dominating'. We were shit and made him look a lot better than he is.

And surely you accept that it’s easier to destroy than to create?

West Ham managed a clean sheet against City at their ground for 45 min, parking the bus is their forte. That doesn’t mean Rice dominated us, it’s pretty easy to just intercept and tackle physically terrible players (Bruno and Eriksen) or technically terrible/physically average (Weghorst, Fred). Even then, they didn’t exactly manage to string passes together and the few forays he made upfield ended in nothing.

It’s the Maguire syndrome all over again, looks assured and dominant in his best condition, but utterly useless when asked to be more adventurous.

He's decent. But no way worth what West Ham are looking for and not suited to a team looking to boss the ball.

Probably end up being an even more expensive Schneiderlin.

I think something that you can't measure and put a price on is character. And from an Arsenal perspective, it's something we could do with more of. On and off the pitch.

Bellingham gets hype but i always see it more in rice especially in his performances for England which i admit i watch more than the bundesliga. Think he has progressed as much as he as he can under a coach like moyes & he could do with a new boss to focus a bit on his passing game, Arteta would be good for him.

I really don't get people who don't rate Rice, he's been one of the best DMs in the game for a good couple of years now.

I've been hoping for Chelsea to sign him since the summer of 2020. For a while it even looked like it might happen and we had a seemingly free run at him but I'm guessing the ship has sailed now and there's too many other clubs after him that we probably don't stand a chance in our current state. Would be my ideal pick for Enzo's midfield partner in a two man midfield.

Young. British. A leader. Fergie would have done everything to sign him.

He was fantastic last night, you can only play what's in front of you, yes we were poor, but he was absolutely everywhere.

That was the Rice I was really excited about a few years ago.

I would like to have him in our team, but I think he will end up at Arsenal or Pool.

I am afraid that with him, we would be too flat in midfield, maybe to defensive with him and Casemiro, with Bruno the only player that can have a real pass forward.

I don't think that him + Casemiro could match as well as a Case+De Jong who can play a bit higher and be this 6/8 we need.

Also his price tag is too much.

Unless Sheikh Jassim comes next week and we have the time to prepare a budget, he will not come.

He's got the physicality our midfielders simply don't and he's better on the ball than people think.

He is a brilliant player who would get more recognition once he moves to a bigger club and play under progressive manager who would help him fine tune his game even further .

I still stand by the fact he'll move to a rival, and you'll have people on here whinging why didn't we go for him when he becomes an absolute rock for them.

He's very good, there's a reason Arsenal will go in for him now he's nearing the end of his contact. He was never a 100m+ player like was talked about.

Yes he would start for us

He may indeed be "better on the ball than people think", but our team isn't missing that. It's missing "every bit as excellent on the ball as people think", as signing another midfielder in the former category still leaves us struggling under pressure in midfield. So his qualities are only relevant to other teams who don't have that priority.

Honestly, I think he's a bit overrated by the media and his price tag, but by the same time I think he's underrated by people who just view him as a bit of a destroyer and who think he's overrated as he's English.

I think yesterday showed he can be a very effective 2 way player. He can drive forward and is better on the ball than many give him credit for. However he's got recovery pace and can intercept high up the pitch and deep.

I might be wrong, but this is where I think where Arteta sees him playing. As a box to box 8, creating turnovers and winning possession high up the pitch, able to drive forward with the ball, but still with the mobility to recover and get back. Xhakas last gasp tackle yesterday for instance, think that's something they could envisage Rice doing more regularly. The fact he can slip in and cover the 6 position very comfortably is a great bonus.

I had the exact same thought. We need a metronome not someone like Rice unless we ditch Bruno and replace him with an old school highly technical #10.

He's a player that we would have loved to have come through our academy for instance, but not what we need to go out and sign for big money. Shame really.

Yes, but not for 100m. I would moan if he leaves for 50m and we didnt go for him. That wont happen this summer.

West Ham value him at 120m actually as of today. Good luck for whoever wants to buy him.
